Given how you're talking, I'm going to assume you never played System Shock 2.
Yep I did play this first. I still replay it now and again. I love the atmosphere. Plus the world building helped make the station feel more real to me. The story of the Blood Omen Legacy of Kain sequels is a testament to this, as well as Prey. Prey 2 ultimately never came out because Bethesda acquired the IP rights to Prey. It is just amazing how companies just disrespect art in the name of business and profit.
Prey is the best immersive sim ever made and i'll die on this hill. The world is alive and reactive despite it being set on a space station full of corpses. Every weapon has a defined purpose and role. The enemies are interesting to fight and while their AI isn't the best it has enough interesting behavior to still be interesting. It has loads of viable builds and there's always something new to find on a new playthrough. Games are games they should be gameplay first and everything else second. Sound design in the game is weird in that it's sometimes really really good like some of the tracks that play on the outside of the station other times it's whatever like the distorted phantom speech, it's not scary at all and distorted human speech is one of the easiest things to make unnerving yet somehow they just got it wrong with the phantoms. Also needed more enemy variety.
It sounds like you would have really liked the escape pod ending (if it wasn't framed so poorly). If one finds the game to be such a slog then they can just nope out of there early, slog over, game done. We failed. This isn't the one.
@@DWTerminator I didn't say it was, I may have implied it but given that you don't review many stealth games and Prey 2017 is not a stealth it has many elements from the genre, it's only an assumption.
I haven't reviewed many stealth games because I just haven't gotten around to making videos on most of the ones I already have, and there simply aren't all that many games in the genre to begin with. It has nothing to do with whether I enjoy them (which I happen to) or not.
Haven't played this yet, but this was my exact reaction to playing Deus ex human revolution. Everyone acts like it's the greatest game ever and even better than the original, meanwhile i got bored of it by the time i got to the Hong Kong mission. I didn't even hate the game. I just stopped playing and never felt like touching it again. I think the big problem with this whole "immersive sim" thing is that people are too fixated on the player freedom aspect. Ss2 and deus ex both actually limited player freedom by making skill points and cyber modules very rare. So you were limited by your build and you had to use the tools provided to solve problems in a creative manner. Not to mention, "immersive sims" like deus ex, ss or thief ( thief shouldn't even be considered the same genre but whatever ) were also absolute pioneers of video game story telling. Thief 2 especially is far more deserving of the "Citizen Kane of gaming" title than The Cutscenes of Us ever will be.
You thought OG prey was mid? Lol, recommend me some fpses cause i don't think theres many i've liked more than that one exceptions being Titanfall 2 and OG quake.
@@DWTerminator I like having little more variety than just shooting, gameplay sections and stage design may have variety in how they play, platforming or puzzle solving would be well received (if well done) A good plus if theres good enemy variety and if the game is somewhat fast paced (with a larger focus on movement)
Comment got buried so sorry for the late response here. Not many "movement focused" FPSs I'd be able to recommend right now. My go-to for that sort of thing is Titanfall 2, which you've already played. There was also the Tribes series, but only Vengeance had a singleplayer campaign. The rest were all multiplayer games and if you can manage to find a match in Tribes 1, 2, or Vengeance these days, you'll be playing against longtime veterans who've mastered the movement mechanics and will utterly demolish you. Also unfortunately can't recommend Tribes Ascend since it got shut down years ago and Tribes 3: Rivals was released into early access back in March and has already been abandoned by the devs. You might want to look into Ultrakill though. I haven't made a video on it yet but it's pretty interesting. There's also Maximum Action but I haven't messed with that in a long time so I'm not sure what it's like in its current state. If you haven't already, you might also want to look into some older games like the Dark Forces series starting with Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 (the original is very old-school and Doom-esque but the ones after it have Force powers and more variety) and F.E.A.R. (the first one, not the sequels). And if you like F.E.A.R., you'll probably like Trepang2 as well since it's going for the same gameplay style. Otherwise, if you want something similar to Prey 2017, look into System Shock and BioShock. If you want to expand the scope of that general style with even more RPG mechanics, look into Deus Ex. This is all stuff that comes to mind pretty much immediately though so I might be forgetting a few other games that might fit in the discussion here.
@DWTerminator i might try Dark forces 2 since i've o ly played 2 Ultrakill is on my to play list for a quite long time either Thanks for the recommendations
The defense of Prey was always interesting to me since it's a genre that's difficult to do with a rocky development cycle from what I heard, so it wouldn't be a surprise that it wouldn't be that great. The empty morality choices and standard gameplay has also unfortunately been kind of the norm for studios aiming to make immersive sims so far. I just feel like there is lack of learning from past attempts.
Arkane focussed on the one thing they accelled at, that was the level design. That is also why Dishonored was the game it was. Granted the chaos system in those games actually had an impact on the story.
The first few hours of exploration and experimentation was a decent experience for me, but later on the game does become a bit of a slog to play. While it wasn't bad enough to completely ruin the game for me, the masterpiece claims are indeed ridiculous. Same goes for the story, there's some interesting stuff, like how humanity discovered the Typhon's for instance, but by the end I was just going through the motions, so my reaction to the big twist at the end was a "sure, whatever".
Was free a while ago on epic and very cheap in the past. I would at least try it out for a 5er if I were you. Expecting the gameplay and level design to be the focus certainly helps, becasue even DW had to admit the game is the strongest in the gameplay.
Arkane studio always been in state of experimenting with their games in a high level like they never get what is needed to be done. Their two first games were clunky and full of stuff but they had focus gameplay arx fatalis had dungeon crawler full of atmosphere and secrets and dark messiah had physic and melee combat. Dishonored gameplay just had tons of options but non of it was great but atmosphere world building and freedom in storytelling and world reaction tovyour action make it amazing but still broken sandbox. After that dishonored 2 and prey 2017 still had that clunky sandbox random stuff but didn't have world atmosphere and storytelling power of dishonored or fun combat of dark messiah it look like those games were fun just by accident
Those games were fun by accident I meant dishonored 1 and arx fatalis and dark messiah like arkane is not good at making fun game but random sandbox simulator and they enjoys it and those 3 games just got lucky to be fun.
I have a similar experience with Titanfall 2. Everyone on UA-cam makes videos about how great it is and a shame it isn't more popular, but of course them and the audience agreeing with them aren't playing the game. There seems to be a few games that are just the perfect content grift hidden gems that audiences love to agree with devoid of free thought. As for prey I've tried it a few times and the pacing leaves me not wanting to continue after about a day.
Titanfall 2 *is* great for what it is, but its singleplayer is very short and most folks won't gel with the advanced movement. Really didn't help that EA practically tried to kill the game off with how poorly they marketed it and the fact that they released it right between other big AAA games that were guaranteed to eat into its audience. Prey 2017 is just boring though. It's not remotely surprising why general audiences have little to no interest in it and yet the game's fans act like that's the players' fault rather than the game itself.
TF2 was mostly great, but the movement system introduced Source Engine glitches (now considered "features") that allowed sweats to move around at like x5 the speed of everyone else. This is what killed the multiplayer because unless you're willing to put in 100s of hours of practice to learn the unintuitive Source movement tricks, you'll have like sub-1 KD The game also suffered from extremely low TTK, dumbed down Titan classes and a more cartoony art style that absolutely nobody asked for. There's a reason why TF2 never manages to keep even 2% of its playerbase boost after sales for more than 1 month.
@@TheJohn_Highway Yeah they cranked movement up for the sequel even making bhoping way easier, then made the r201 two shot cross map on a hitscan. The entire design of launch state was really pandering to the audience I assume they thought avoided the first title. There were also a litany of other changes I don't see the purpose of like the changes to rodeo, or character models indicating abilities rather than weapon loadouts.
I've got into a bunch of arguments on reddit bc I said was meh and they think its God tier. The respawning of enemies in cleared areas like the main hall is annoying. Loading screens are ridiculous and hurt pacing. The level design has its moments but not blowing me away. The outside space and zero G levels just felt overly clunky, They recycled some assets from Dishonored and they look out of place. The game overstayed its welcome, that last 10-15% wasn’t needed. I would’ve liked to have seen the then do the whole Groundhog Day idea in the trailer and beginning as well. For the term ImSim we shouldn't be worried about what tourist think. I would content RPG runs the same faults as ImSim bc your referring to a game that lets you make choices in convo, have discussions and use points to increase attributes, but your not stating what its doing gameplay wise Persona, Cyberpunk, Fallout, The Witcher and Mass Effect are all RPGs but it doesn't define what the game is, hence they RPG is hyphenated with something else before. For ImSim they don't for some reason and its design philosophy not a genre
This review makes me think of Control. Another game people praised for it's features, but the entire game takes place in a brutalist government building.
Nightmare is weak against a certain type of grenade. 3-4 of them and he's out. I respect your opinion but that part of the video is bordering on misinformation.
1. That's useless information if you don't have those grenades when the nightmare shows up. 2. There's no way the player will know that without a bunch of trial and error or consulting external sources of information. I certainly didn't know it from playing the game normally and frankly didn't even know until you specifically mentioned it because I don't go digging around in game wikis and guides unless I actually need to. 3. It's a damage sponge that you either waste your ammo (or grenades) on or just find a hiding spot to sit on for 3 minutes, and the only difference between defeating it and evading it is 10 minutes of reprieve. Either way it's an annoyance rather than what the devs intended, which was the entire point of what I was talking about.
I can neither. Deathloop, the Wolfenstein Youngbood work and finally Redfall. But to be fair Redfall killed the Austin branch, so that kinda checks out. Everything after Prey turned to shit however, so it's only a question of time before the Lyon branch gets shuttered as well.
Most of what people love about their older work hasn't really been carried forward into anything after Dishonored 2, and even in that game the cracks in the facade were getting quite obvious. Most of the talent that made Arkane what it once was has left the studio by now so at this point it's little more than brand recognition.
The ending sucks! I just (finally) beat this one for the first time ever. The maps suck. It is impossible to find all the objectives and things you need to get in this game. The enemies are SO damn annoying. I like the look of it, and it is fun doing some of the side quests in outer space, but this one just falls flat. I too remember all the praise for this, but to me, it isn't close to as good as any of the Bioshock games or Dishonored 1 and 2.
Played until last 2 missions and uninstalled it. Enemy amount and difficulty got way too high and didnt want to play anymore. Watched ending on YT and hated that game even more. I hate simulations in videogames. Games itself are simulations. Ou and the guns sucked too. Compared to bioshock this has only the graphics style. Gameplay is way shittier. And that 60s style isnt for me. Never liked Arcane games. Even thou i tried with dishonored and this.
I really do think a lot of this game's acclaim simply comes from how sparse the releases of games in the same vein as System Shock, BioShock, and Deus Ex are. The so-called "immersive sim" fans are so utterly desperate for something new that they'll call any new game of that style a masterpiece no matter how it actually is.
I tried the demo of that on steam, actually both demos they put out. It was very limited in weapon and enemy varity. I'm not sure if it got significantly better. But I'm looking forward to DW speaking about it.
It's bewildering how you simply don't get why people like so many acclaimed video games
Different people have different taste. And some are less critical than others
It's just a bland Bioshock clone, it's obvious that some people will be happy with that and enjoy it while others wont.

If one finds the game to be such a slog then they can just nope out of there early, slog over, game done.
We failed. This isn't the one.
I just love this game. Neuroshock would be a great title you got that right...
Yeah this is one of my most played games and certainly has a lot of flaws, but judging by the video I get that you're just not a fan of stealth games.
Prey 2017 is not a stealth game.
@@DWTerminator I didn't say it was, I may have implied it but given that you don't review many stealth games and Prey 2017 is not a stealth it has many elements from the genre, it's only an assumption.
Also i apologize in advance for my horrid wording, ESL.
Prey 2006 was a fair bit worse than "mid."
I'm not going to give you recommendations without more information on what you're looking for in an FPS.
@@DWTerminator I like having little more variety than just shooting, gameplay sections and stage design may have variety in how they play, platforming or puzzle solving would be well received (if well done)
A good plus if theres good enemy variety and if the game is somewhat fast paced (with a larger focus on movement)
@DWTerminator i might try Dark forces 2 since i've o ly played 2
Ultrakill is on my to play list for a quite long time either
Thanks for the recommendations
Now it makes sense. DW stands for DimWit.
I just could never get over that they killed Prey 2 and came out with this bland looking Bioshock clone that had absolutely nothing to do with Prey.
Thanks for letting us know, DW, was eyeing my eyes on this one.
This is what killed the multiplayer because unless you're willing to put in 100s of hours of practice to learn the unintuitive Source movement tricks, you'll have like sub-1 KD
The game also suffered from extremely low TTK, dumbed down Titan classes and a more cartoony art style that absolutely nobody asked for.
Except Control is actually fairly fun for the most part.
@@DWTerminator I couldn't get into it for much of the reasons you highlighted in this review. Still, great video.
MoonCrash ?
it is fun ... but repetitive
Roguelike with unskippable tutorial and story missions, what were they thinking?
Abhorrent taste
The game is bland, but passable as an oasis in the desert that is the triple A immersive sim genre.
There is no "immersive sim" genre, let alone one that's AAA. It's just a worthless buzzword.
I can't understand why people still like Arkane.
DW, you just don't get it. It's not for you.
Go back playing Call of Duty!
I didn't care for Prey either. I agree with your assessment of it being sinfully boring.
There's not much reason to play this when there's the System Shock remake.
Well, at least it's a LOT better than Starfield
I remember starting this game at least a few times, mostly because of "good" reviews... This game sucked more than the vacuum of space!
It's one of those games that look good, sound good, but plays like shit. Basically Bethesda crap.
Most of Bethesda's work looks and sounds like crap too.
Doesn't even look good in my opinion. The whole art direction is as bland as possible.
lol the comments are hilarious good job DW
@@theodorelux Bonus points for the braaindead morons still not able to know what a development studio and what a publisher is. Holy fuck!
Hey dm terminator do you have discord ?
Some of the best level design with the lamest story and shittiest enemies possible, really, really frustrating game to play.
