- Filmed in 1994 Iain and his men (Wayne and can't remember but working on it!!!) strip down some Mirrlees KP Major Cylinder heads ready for overhaul. The 2 large round components removed from the cylinder heads are the exhaust valve cages. The cylinder heads are off 12 cylinder dual fuel engines installed at Manchester airport. Similar parts of Mirrlees engines can be viewed at the Anson Engine Museum Poynton Cheshire
I can remember similar wee green vans running about Aberdeen harbour from the Aberdeen base. In 1994 I worked for a Norwegian engine manufacturer, to carry out the same type of head overhaul we had fully enclosed head degreasing machines, purpose built head benches, power jacks , powered cranes and powered fork lifts not to mention all the equipment to machine the heads in house. We thought that we were hard done by and doing heads was the worst job in the factory.
It is hardly surprising that we don’t hear of Mirrlees Diesel now they simply didn’t move with the times. They thought that their core market customers, like Cal-Mac , fishermen and small vessels would always come back to them, unfortunately other manufacturers were simply producing a far better more efficient and cost effective products.
Interesting. I note that the Hebridean Isles is being retired. I wonder how many hours she has on her units, so to speak.
I still remember the oily smell of that depot :D
