Indeed. Extremely ritualised politeness isn't actually being polite, it's just arbitrary repeating a set of scripts while the actual behaviour can range from actually helpful to outright hostile
It’s like when people greet you with “hi how are you?”, they don’t really want to know and you’re not even supposed to really answer, which just makes it weird and awkward for everyone. I just say hello, I don't ask people how they are except if I really know them and want to know. Sometimes I respect people more when they're rude a$$holes because at least they're being honest. Every time I go to Trader Joes the cashier asks me twice what I'm doing today, I'm an introvert and just want to be left alone.
idk. there’s nothing wrong with being polite. i could understand if the customers came in and started being rude, in which case the chef is 100% justified. but it puts a bad taste in my mouth if the service is bad even if the customer is polite. even then, some of my favorite places to eat have the meanest staff😂
Yes, it's good to not have the expectation. But at the same time, it also means that those who do manage to do both are putting in a lot of work to make you happy. And both should be respected.
people need to understand that these guys aren't 'chef's - they're just dudes that make ramen. I can respect that, where I live there is a chef with the same mindset. She has this place who is well known among the locals. She does all sorts of food but her main menu is local specialities. She has a normal version, spicy version, very spicy and extra spicy so as Mexican if we tell you that something is spicy we are not joking, let alone extra spicy. It got traction among tourists because it was featured on a travel blog that is somewhat famous and everything was going well until it wasn't. Entitled tourists and spoiled brats started to complain online because they were expecting some sort of special treatment if they got the spicy and up dishes. Like free food as it was a challenge place or at least something to quell the heat or reduced pricing on extra spicy stuff. Ya know anything to reward their reckless behaviour. So as expected she was like nope, if you decide to eat then is your choice, I didn't force you and of course some people took it the wrong way saying she is rude, that the food is impossible to eat and what not. In the end for anyone who is not a local, you need to sign a responsibility paper that everything you eat is and whatever happens if for example you had the bravado to eat something stupid spicy that doesn't resonate well with you is as the paper said your responsibility and she is not liable if you get sick from the spice levels. After that entitled tourists just walk away and locals can eat as normally, she is happy with her business being as it is as she likes talking with the people that really appreciate her food and if you are nice and try the spicy menu, she might even give you ice cream for free if you don't come demanding stupid things right off the back
