      +Brandon Pack The device altered players minds. It was not that they liked the game, rather they were addicted to the device. Those who have played talked it up so much everyone else had to try it at least once, then they were addicted too and convinced the next person to give it a try.

    The TNG game released pleasure hormones in the brains of those who played it, making it essentially a drug. It would thus be more like heroin than sexual pleasure.

      Pretty sure it was endorphins, the same things that gets released from certain activities in "free" mobile phone games, so in a way they predicted games would manipulate people using endorphins in order to get us addicted.

      There's nothing charming about censorship.

    • @joshuaschmidt4420
      @joshuaschmidt4420 8 років тому +2

      morbidchid I don't really want to sound too harsh here. Bearing animosity is a waste of energy, But I can't seem to word this in a way that doesn't sound a little crass. So to be clear I'm just trying to justify my defending Dorkly's artistic choice. What happened in this episode wasn't a case of censorship. Censorship is when content is taken out from the completed work for PC or PR reasons which alter whatever message the artists wants to convey. Or silenced completely by some third party (government/media/etc.) What we have here was a stylistic choice. They thought it was funnier bleeped and so do I. Not because some third party told them to, or because they were afraid of offending anyone. Besides, we knew he was saying fuck so bleeping it didn't change what he said,, just how we heard it. So nothing was cut out in this instance. only edited to make what they (the artists) believed to be a better video.

    • @morbidchid
      @morbidchid 8 років тому

      Joshua Schmidt
      But it's not an artistic thing. It's a thing created by the FCC that should not be enforced for any reason on the internet. And it's been proven that the word actually gets more meaning (and seems to us to be more intense) if they bleep it out. So you notice the word a lot more (and think about it in a negative light) when you hear a bleep instead of just hearing the word.
      What we have is NOT a stylistic choice, but people afraid of changing the status quo. Thinking that swearing will somehow make this video not viewable for a younger audience (that use the word more frequently than anyone else). And if you think this had nothing to do with PR then you're wrong.

    Hey guy, ExistenZ wasn't supposed to be realistic in terms of how people would play videogames. It's extremely exaggerated and you would have known that if you knew more about David Cronenberg. His movies often portray an exaggerated sense of a subject. Videodrome is a good example of that, I mean do you really think a television network dedicated to snuff and sex would really-

    Getting the rights for videogames is a lot more expensive and complicated than music. That's why they usually make up their own videogames in movies/TV unless if the story calls for an already licensed videogame(The Wizard for example). Every now and then they go meta though(Breaking Bad, when Jesse was playing Rage) but ordinarily they try to avoid the hassle because the paperwork, cost, effort and time it takes to get the rights isn't worth it in the longrun.

    Sword Art Online thinks people would play MMORPG's that don't have magic, the Japanese government would allow VR headsets to be sold that can omit fatal levels of microwaves and then not do anything when people are being held hostage online, and players would just go to a different VRMMORPG after escaping traumatizing circumstances. Oh, and let's not forget that it's the fuckin premise of the show and not just a one-off episode!

    I remember the TNG episode every time an abusive parent kills their kids, and videogames are sighted as an aggravating factor, even though abusive parenting is not a newly emergent social behavior in our society. If anything, it's quite primal.
    Anyway, aside from that, I'm lucky to have missed all the other depictions of gaming that made it on this list. I guess I don't watch as much TV as I thought.

  • @JesterAzazel
    @JesterAzazel 8 років тому +2

    Licensing seems to be more of a costly and time consuming process than I once thought. That's apparently why shows are using different intro music. Shows as old as Wonder Years and as recent as House would rather change the music than bother getting the rights to the original music all over again.
    I don't blame them for using fake games, I just blame them for their lack of creativity. That 'tubes eating discs' game was one of the worst ones I've seen.

    • @darkmyro
      @darkmyro 8 років тому

      +Jester Azazel I actually thought it was one of their better ones(mostly cause it would be like a flappy or angry birds), first person shooter was the worse because of a ton of reasons
      1.the name is dumb, like really dumb, no game company would call their game something that boring unless they had some witty marketing
      2. its basically a shooting gallery and those went out in the mid 90s the last one i remember playing was time crisis 3, and that's an arcade game so it makes sense
      3. The moment anyone died from in the game it would be pulled or stopped, yeah some people have died playing video games , but those were either due to exhaustion, clots, dehydration, or cause people were being really stupid and wasn't the games fault itself
      4. a game that real looking would have to be super expensive, like it would be like possibly millions or billions to produce so it wouldn't be cost effective
      5.you could only advertise to people that play FPS specifically which makes your audience smaller again playing into its cost effectiveness
      I could literally go on XD
      I don't think its a lack of creativity, but its more a lack of understanding, cause i have seen games I would play in movies that don't exist. Most of these people who are making these have never played a game in their life, I think in the near future, fake games are gonna look a little more realistic, its just the kinda of game that someone in their 40s -60s would think of right now, and not the kind of game someone who actually knows anything about games would make.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 8 років тому

      +Jester Azazel The thing with relicensing music for DVD/digital release is that it isn't as simple as picking up the phone and saying "Get Crash & the Boys to let us use 'We Hate You' on the DVD" - sure, if the band still exists, is still using the same agent, are happy to have their song associated with the show, and don't want too much more money now that the show's proven to be a hit rather than being a new and untried property, you can make a deal fairly easily. On the other hand, the band might be too greedy, might have moved on and want to distance themselves from their earlier work, might have changed representation and need to be tracked down, or might have broken up and require half a dozen different negotiations for half a dozen different shares of the rights, with any of the individuals causing any of the other problems independently.
      For a show like Buffy, say, where the Bronze used to have real local bands no-one had ever heard of (except that one fan who has both their (home-made) CDs), any rights that weren't picked up on the day of shooting would be almost impossible to pick up later because the band-members would have got 9-5 jobs and lost touch with one another...

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 8 років тому

    The British sci-fi show Primeval actually used Oblivion and the fantasy show Once Upon a Time used Diablo 3. Those are only examples I can think of I can think of right now. But I also think a lot of entertainment in the 90's used Mario. I think the difficulty in using real games is you can't write a story in a particular universe without it breaking it's rules. Imagine if they used Doom in that X-files episode. Actually never mind. Doom sending people to a hell dimension in a video game that eventually Scully conquers with the help of her Christianity sounds like a much better episode.

    First off, the whole concept of Existenz is misrepresented because there is a "twist" that this video pretends does not exist. Secondly, the movie imagines a fully immersive virtual reality game so real that the players can;t even tell if they are in the game or not. So any comparison between that and contemporary video games is like somebody in the 1950s trying to imagine how the internet would change our lives.

    You should have at least mentioned Tron. Even if that game wasn't as bad as these, it's still worth honorable mention because of how the movie was designed around the game being awesome, and how the game itself played such a big role in the movie.

    That last game looks ridiculous. Who would try to make a game about moving shapes around to make them disappear. Except Tetris. Bejeweled. Candy Crush. Basically every line-em-up mobile game ever made. Of course the game on Star Trek had addictive properties. It's not like video games would do something like that. They wouldn't take advantage of psychology to purposefully create a game with addictive properties just to keep milking you for more money.

    I kinda wish they still made up video games. Now they just take two shooters, show a clip from one, and use the sound from another. They even used a scene from Call of Duty in NCIS as some sort of military simulation. I just find it hard to believe no one ever made a 'made-for-tv' game, that just looks good in these situations. It'd be like stock photography, only way more difficult.

    I forgot if it was Criminal Minds or NCIS, but it a "Video Game" that was basicly a shity 3D wizzard waving is arms in the air while standing next to a viking or orc that was loopes over and over again. It was used at least two or three times. One of the episodes started with this angry fat guy yelling at the looping wizzard.

    Best ever interpretation of a fake spam site have to be from Criminal Minds. More specificaly the one that pilots "Criminal Minds: CYBER"
    The leader for the CYBER unit shows her skills by hacking a video of a sexy girl, removing the veil and showing it's fakeness. Yes, the girl is in fact a robot created in cyberspace, and then they put real like skin on her.

    I always thought the Star Trek: TNG ep was dumb because: why use a headset to play a virtual game where you have a holodeck which is basically a giant virtual reality RPG simulator complete with the sights, sounds, and stimulations of real life. Want to gun down hordes of alien creatures, jump into the holodeck. Need a virtual chick to get you off, jump into the holodeck. Tour Paris in the mid 20th century, holodeck. Solve a story based mystery... okay, you get the idea.

      +The Laughing Rabbit Well, in the episode Riker was on another planet and was persuaded to play the game by a women who seduced him. The game was specifically designed to be addictive and brainwash (The methods the game uses for this aren't integral to the plot). I think it'd be kinda arrogant to assume other societies recreational devices are inferior to your own.

    I think "old school media" like music, movies & tv don't like to deal with newer media like games and tech. That's why they reference each other fine but make something "fake" when it comes to the tech world. How many times have you seen Apple devices referred to by name? Or Google, UA-cam, or Facebook? It does happen but not often. They usually get called something like Pear or Facepage or WeTube.

    Well yeah, Star Trek's "AF" was weak, but remember this was on a TV budget!
    When it comes to "Existenz" and "Domination", you are just plain wrong. "Existenz" is a brilliant ride of losing yourself in VR so much that you cannot tell reality any more, and the visual style does a fantastic job of conveying the overworldyness that this story needs - it has to feel weird, and that is exactly what it does. There are far more stupid examples to rant about, like "Wargames" and "Tron". Why don't you bash those?
