I totally agree with you. I liked D & B as a couple, but I loved their friendship even more, and I think because they had such strong chemistry that the writers decided to make them enemies to close the door on their relationship altogether, otherwise it would have been too hard for them to ignore the fact that Dan was always the better choice for her.
If I remember right and please don't quote me cuz it's been years Dan and Blair were basically endgame. It had been setup from the very beginning that the two from opposite worlds would realize what they were always searching for was each other. However there was a writers strike or something and the original writer who planned that left. Their replacement preferred chair because it had better ratings (cuz ya know, teens love toxic romances if they have chemistry, which Chuck and Blair did tbf) So they had to basically rewrite everything to make chair and derena happen. It's why the relationship ended so abruptly at the end of s5 and why season 6 seemed to regress the two back to the enemies state they were in back in season 1. It basically undid all of Blairs multiple season character development and put her right back at square one pining after Chuck when just a few episodes prior she had the option to be with him and chose Dan. The writers essentially just regressed everyone. Also Dan being gossip girl was not a thing originally and makes no sense. The actors have talked about alot of this over the years and s6 was a disappointment to all of them.
tbh i think blair was actually more herself with dan than she ever was with nate or chuck or even in friendship with serena. the relationship with dan was extremely healthy and she was vulnerable constantly with no fear when around him. and also dan seemed to be very confortable around her more than with serena. when dan was with serena to be honest it seemed more like a goal, something that he wanted as a kid and then when he had the chance he grabbed it not even thinking if he actually truly wanted it, felt for it. with serena he seemed to always have a guard up, never actually trusting the relationship idk for me the ships that should have sailed shoud have been: dan and blair, chuck and the french girl, serena and carter.
