Juniper, Gentle & Rosemary / Riddles Wisely Expounded

This is a pretty lousy video, but I’m posting it anyway because my goal with these songs is to be a sharer more than a performer. I’ve always been inspired by the imperfect recordings of Pete Seeger-he was a sharer, too.
So, here we have another version of Child Ballad number 1, “Riddles Wisely Expounded.” This one has the title “Juniper Gentle & Rosemary,” sometimes “Jennifer Gentle & Rosemary.”
Being of oral tradition, some of these songs have bits that don’t make a lot of sense. Are Juniper and Rosemary two of the three sisters? Or is Gentle one of the sisters’ names? And the line “answer questions three” when there are then more than three questions (different variations also have different questions! And different numbers of questions!)
There may be answers to these wonderings, but because I am not a professional, I am left to still wonder.
There will be one more version of this song from me coming up, the one where the knight is the devil in disguise! So stay tuned….
