- The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles are finally coming to the West, which means that fans of Phoenix Wright games have two entirely new games to look forward to. In The Great Ace Attorney, one of Phoenix Wright's ancestors, Ryunosuke Naruhodo, travels to Victorian London to team up with acclaimed super sleuth...Herlock Sholmes?
Wait, no, that can't be right.
While in the Japanese edition of Great Ace Attorney (Dai Gyakuten Saiban) features a team-up with Sherlock Holmes, the Western releases features a completely different character. A completely. Different. Legally. Distinct. Character.
Why? Because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Estate is nothing if not litigious, and they have a very liberal interpretation of what constitutes their copyrighted material.
Lots of love,

Herlock Sholmes just feels like more of an ace attorney name. This is the same game series that gave us names like Larry Butz, Lotta Hart, and Ini Miney. Herlock Sholmes fits in perfectly
You can't copyright a goddamn personality trait. I'd like to get my hands on the judge who accepted that argument in court
This is so funny: you move 1 letter in the character's name and they can no longer catch you, even if that character is OBVIOUSLY the same one. It's like a swift kick in the knees and it's hilarious
Surprised there wasn’t a throwaway comment about how Disney has been profiting off the public domain since forever thanks to all their fairy tale adaptations. Disney’s genuinely so full of it.
Now we wait for Great Ace Attorney to be in public domain and reuse its iteration of Herlock Sholmes in a Persona 5 Parody to complete the full circle
No, this isn't a Mario fangame. This is Superior Lario Siblings, about Lario and his brother Muigi who are out to save Person of Royalty Frogstool, otherwise known as Nectarine, from the clutches of the evil Fils-Aimé! You can't sue me now, Nintendo!
everyone knows it's because capcom couldn't come up with a good replacement name for sherlock until someone saw a herlock sholmes meme and thought that was the most genius thing ever
As a certain blue hedgehog once said no copyright in the universe is going to stop me...
The moral of the story: SOMETIMES, good things DON’T come to those who wait...
Kinda ironic that a game franchise about attorneys at law ran into some legal trouble...
"Here's where Persona 5 comes into the mix, by the way."
"Copyright law lasts a little longer in the US"
Doyle Estate: "If the Burroughs Estate can hold Tarzan hostage from Kingdom Hearts, I can do the same to Capcom!"
I am not surprised that Herlock was the trick to avoid copywrite issues, although rather fascinating the whole deal with the "copyrighted works" is really just a trap at this point since technically, the whole point of public domain characters is that you can take them and CHANGE them, so emotional development shouldn't really be so easy as a trick to keep Sherlock out of public use.
I will gladly watch anything Ace Attorney
Copyright law : You can't release the great ace attorney in the US because Sherlock Holmes is copyrighted

Can't wait to see how Susato fangirls over Le Blanc's famous work of Herlock Sholmes vs Arsene Lupin. Maybe she'll be a Lupin fan too, hahaha!
What’s not mentioned in the video is that the US court ruling that declared Holmes to be in the public domain also called the Conan Doyle estate’s business model “extortion”. They enforced a copyright they didn’t have by intimidating creators with threats of lawsuits, and since no one wants to go to court the creators and producers would always pay what the estate wanted.
"To the Conan Doyle Estate, the greedy imprisoners of the master of deduction and good rival of mine. You cease and desist all those who wants to travel to the great world of case solving magic in their own way, believing that you are carrying out the will of good old Arthur. Thus, i have decided to steal those distorted desires away, and if managed to beat dear Sherlock, then i assure you, i can't fail." [From: Arsene Lupin]
