As an IT professional, I really don't care for 'smart' devices. Anything internet facing isn't secure, period. Most smart devices have a limited security update path to boot so they are much less secure than most other forms of internet facing devices. Once their service life is ended, they are typically hugely vulnerable and given how difficult to install some of the devices are that could be a big problem: especially if they connect to your network as they can be used as a weak point to enter other devices. So while the features sound nice and convenient, they are often quite a pain in the long run. And after all that, you have to factor in the fact that big Tech loves smart devices because of the amount of personal data the devices provide the manufacturers. But overall, nice episode. Might want an episode to talk about the issues with smart devices though, it would be interesting to hear what other folks think. Just don't get the sales rep to be your expert lol
I really wish more people would think long term like this. Smart systems are a nightmare, I'd never have them integrated into my home. Ex-IT professional too.
I agree that I would never let a simple smart device be connectable over the internet. What I did in my home was create a subnet that all smart devices get allocated IP addresses on. This would include switches, plugs, thermostats etc. That subnet does not allow WAN access. This allows me to control these devices when I am home via the LAN. When I am not home, I simply VPN to my home network and then control them. The smart devices themselves never have internet access. Alerts go through a WAN accessible SMTP server. All of this can be accomplished with a local home automation system like Home Assistant and open source router software like DD-WRT for free.
I’m like Dad. We are old fashioned for a reason, so we can fix it ourselves. I don’t want to rely on some future analytics customer service bot to troubleshoot what I can fix myself. I think all of us IT people agree.
This was a great project - restoration, preservation, modernization & beautification project to show how cities can regentrify without changing a culture or the nature of human neighborhoods while moving people back into formerly rundown centers ahead of wrecking balls & bulldozers. Thanks & Cheers !!!
I always avoid using voice activation. I can do things faster than having to repeat instructions and or having to correct the device when it gets things wrong
Shellac is the secretion of the female Lac bug, not the exoskeleton. At least that is what it says if you look it up online. Regardless, shellac is cool stuff and is even used in foods.
oh, no, don't buy a Kohler toilet. You need a special tool to get seat off and the same tool to re-install it. It's $50. They don't use a twist nut on the underside of the toilet. It's an embedded nut in the porcelain.
Hi, it is great that we can control all the lighting from our phone, now we need to stop people telling the world that we are all out of town on Facebook. It must be a burglar’s paradise; all he has to do is troll the internet to find his next victim.
@@webdev217 actually, any form of alcool will reactivate the shellac finish and will need repair. With the success of _This Old House_ , would it be too much to once again license Fats Waller's rendition of "Louisiana Fairy Tale" to be the opening and closing theme of the show again? I always sync the openings and endings of each episode with the song.
Temperature smart technology also means that somebody smarter than whoever designed it can hack it. I’m a union electrician and I install this kind of stuff in buildings.Because as a whole we’ve gotten lazier, want to do everything off our phones were taking a bigger chance of being hacked.
We do it the old-fashioned way - we set the thermostats for economy all the time and if we're home we can turn it up or down if needed. And if we're not home it doesn't need to be touched... so simple and unhackable
It's always good seeing Roger again. 👍 Great job, all of ya!

Something really erks me about that landscape designer lol.. Roger will always be the man
It bothered me that he grabbed the bag just to make himself look like he was working. 😂
What is cool is that the customer will not forget his name - Gardner

I have a black thumb and I still noticed that.
Don’t crush the roots with all your might.
It’s not necessary. Many people do it but it really doesn’t do much and often damages the roots.

Nobody cares that the landscape guy’s last name is Gardner

Nominative determinism.

People with their “smart” BS
They put the shackles on themselves.
With smart home technology ,why not add blue tooth light bulbs for soft music while entertaining ?
Because that would be a security risk.
