    I've been trying all sorts of things, have just been getting worse in competitive play as the anxiety builds with each match.
    I play relaxed with my regular tennis bud one day then the next day in a competitive match I'm horrible. This past Saturday against my regular partner I was a solid 4.0, then the next day in ladder play I was 3.0.
    Going to try these, I have been looking for concrete physiological things I can do. Just saying "relax your mind" isn't working because my mind feels out of my control during competitive matches, hard to explain but I feel like a passenger in my own mind and the matches are over so quickly. It might be 60 minutes earth time but in my mind it's just a couple minutes.
    I'll come back with an update.

      +Dai Kayll the ole freeroll on the serve. In competitive match play and even NCAA where players call their own lines, they use this “freeroll”technique to their advantage. 😤

    great advice guys. I used to play college tennis back in the day and then hadn't really touched a racket in like 20 years; might have played a few times a year. Now I am back playing doubles, doing some league matches in my city and found myself pretty nervous on important points, at very important times in the match. When I played back in the day, I did most of the items you covered, but with this long pause, I just forgot those basics, breathing, shaking your hands out, moving of the feet. Especially on my forehand, i grip the racket tightly and hit like a T-Rex arms - pretty crappy follow through then. I wrote the notes down and will keep them in my pocket so if I start to feel nervous, I can read it to myself in between games as a reminder.

      Thanks Mirza, glad to hear the tips helped. Always good to have a reminder and refresh on things. We all get nervous its just a matter of how we respond to those nerves. Sounds like you'll be back to collegiate form in no time!

    Hi, guys, it's me again!
    I like this nerves thingy you put together. I am a lead mental health worker and no disagreement with your advice. I notice about relaxing especially on the breath I always show my clients why this works. The quickness of breath is trying to prepare you to flight or fight. There is anxiousness, worry, yips panic attack etc. Lengthening the breathing changes the ratio of CO2 to O2 in your bloodstream, therefore, fooling the brain into thinking you're relaxed, the more C02 the more reason for your brain to think, life is sweet, and visa versa. With the added information I find the clients can research more and they can get the hang of what's going on for them inside. There is a lot of what we don't know but there are answers and these should be explored it really helps the client to absorb and learn and many times I ask the client to teach me now what I have explained so they really do know their subject.
    Your both doing great work, I like this site.
    Perhaps you should think about a way of managing loss and defeat and still been a success in life. There must be other sites that show and help players around the transition to knowing I will not be number one in the world into a career and life that is even more fulfilling.
    I also like the relax a dominant muscle to instil different thoughts, I am looking at the stomach muscles to help thoughts and tension and posture. Its the same as the hand in tennis where I try to find the tension and then as soon as you see this or feel it by releasing this muscle you can change how your thinking which can further relax you, you can go too far and think you are in Thailand.
    One area which really plays into the game may be one step higher, is the amount of sleep one needs, this increases! Fedder has said he is sleeping 12 hours a night with naps during the day, this is about both body and mind healing after a workout. HRV readings may also reflect the recovery times needed. I think sleep will prevent injury and help you psychologically on the court and in all walks of life.
    Try to read Dr Steve Peters psychiatrist, maybe the Chimp paradox and for stress read Dr Robert Sapolesky neuroscientist, Why don't Zebras Get Ulcers.
    Something I know maybe an issue, addictions need to be understood in sport, not enough conversation about failing and what this may mean for a person or life trauma, sports people are not magically protected because they play sport. One in four of the population will develop major mental health illnesses at some point in their lives, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar and GAD to serious addictions and poor coping strategy. Perhaps signposting to services and empathy will be a better route to follow for a client if they did show they were in trouble and there are people in trouble, not talking about this would not help them.
    These are just a few things I am thinking about when I am playing a match, Ha just kidding. I must remember to split step or is that hop!!

    What about struggling to find your pace in the beginning of a game.. then you start getting nervous because you missed shots that usually are quite easy to deal with?!

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  5 років тому +5

      Habimarket great question! If you’re struggling swinging through the shot and finding pace, I would hit out while aiming for big targets including cross court (longest part of the court, lowest part of the net) or even straight down the middle. It’s all about “The 4x4 philosophy”, at least 4ft away from the lines & at least 4 ft over the net. It’s also important to swing through and attack several balls in the warm up or even pre-warm up. Any tips about nerves while serving? A few years ago I got so nervous in a big tournament I started double faulting multiple times a game and still struggle with my serve when I get nervous. The first game of every match I still have this fear of double faulting and play really tight and then loosen up starting the 2nd game, but my 1st service game is usually a disaster. I know my serve is great when I'm relaxed, but that 1st game especially it's like I'm not in control of my body.

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  4 роки тому +3

      maxpowers3732 great question as we have all been there. Linked below is a vid where we discussed battling nerves on court. I would also recommend opting to return first when given the chance. This way you give yourself a game to loosen up before having to serve. I would also advise to avoid the trap of trying “not” to double fault. Focus on locating targets and accelerating through each serve. If you miss you miss on your terms. You will gradually begin to take ownership of the process and loosen up. I hope this helps, Keep us posted!

    Am I the only one nervous in training like when doing practice points? I also hate it when I just don't try enough and play without care pretty much and I feel rlly bad after cause it was a waste of time. I want to play competitively again in training and find my will to win again like it's been gone a while I need help haha. Any tips to keep my tennis at the high level I know and have played at?

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  3 роки тому

      That's a tough one limmy lime. You have to figure out what the driving force is behind your tennis. What is your motivation to compete at a high level? If it's not there perhaps it's enjoying tennis as exercise and as a social outlet. Which is totally fine. If competing at a high level is your goal perhaps outline how your going to get there. Practice, fitness, matchplay are all important aspects to advanced playing. Thanks for watching, best of luck to ya!
