Today, we do a little deep dive into the Kindle app and see how it compares to buying a Kindle e-reader. Is it worth investing money into the e-reader when the app does the same thing for free?

Hi there!
It’s great to meet you 🥰
My name is Maneetpaul Singh, but my friends call me Maneet (pronounced muh-neet). I'm a bookworm from Connecticut who loves tech. When I bought my first e-reader in 2020, I began reading more than I ever had before. I’ve made it my mission to help people fall in love with reading through Book Tech.
Think of me like the MKBHD of books.
There are three things I want you to know.
(1) If you'd like to read a new nonfiction book with me every month, join my book club with a community of 1,000+ bookworms: go.maneetpaul.com/book-club
(2) If you’re struggling to build a daily reading habit and want to know how I became a bookworm, check out my short book titled Just One More Chapter: geni.us/GQX7rKe

Best take away quote “ just enjoy the act of reading” .
I, personally, Hate the continuous scroll feature. it just feels wrong. I like feeling like I'm progressing page by page.
For me the main advantage of the Kindle is the eInk screen. The app is nice, but it's a failsafe for if I don't have my Kindle on me. I do agree that Kindles need the analytics on them.
Two tangential comments:
1) One of my biggest issues with Kindle is that there's not a good way to easily view what books are in my library. I've always thought that Amazon needs to develop something similar to Valve's Steam which would let users easily see and manage their eBook library.
2) One of my pet peeves is when people say that they don't like eBooks (or something similar), but it turns out that they've never used an eInk device! They'll say stuff like "I just get so distracted by notifications," or "the screen hurts my eyes" and I'm like "There is a device that fixes all of those issues."
I hate when people say Ebooks have no real feels and keep on comparing it to physical books
For me, the key point Isn't the lack of distractions, it's the screen which is designed for reading - I used the Kindle app on an iPad to read for a long time and I didn't like the reflections in daylight and the bright back light at night. I tried using the app on a phone and I find the screen too small, feels much more like reading a book when using a bigger device.
I read my kindle every single day. It's just such a great experience and you get so much more from reading on the device vs just on the phone app. Never heard of this immersion feature. I would rather just do one or the other - audible or ebook.
I do have old kindle basic. Take with me on the road. At home I use an Android w/o sim. I hotspot it to my iPhone or to wifi. Use it to read kindle, kobo, Google play, put it in grey scale if not using it as gps. And lower light level. And podcasts, audio book down loads & ebooks. At home use old iPad mini with grey scale too.
Love the Immersion feature
I just got a Scribe during the Amazon spring sale. My new favorite thing. I’ve always found kindles to be awkward to hold generally uncomfortable. Scribe isn’t perfect for every situation, but for how I use it it is fantastic.
I just decided to compare reading on the app on my iPad 5th gen and then on my Kindle Voyage. The immediate take away was the weight difference. 478g for my iPad and 180 grams for my Voyage. Coupled with the eInk and lack of distraction keeps me preferring my Kindle. Great video!
I did not know about immersion, but I think i still prefer my Kindle. Thanks for sharing this info!
I still prefer my Kindle, too :) Thanks for watching!
Intention. When we do things with intention we do those things more often and with greater affect.
(that said - colour screens for diagrams is a pretty nice App feature - on the iPad at least)
Yes
Maneet, do you have any suggestions for colour eReaders? The selection isn't the largest, but I still want to make a good purchase.
App is just an app but kindle ereader is on another level..
I'll point out its pros and cons
Pros
Fast reading
No glare or eyesight problems
Easy to carry
Space saver
Free options for broke people 😅
Cons
People keep on talking to you thinking you're using your phone 😅
Slow page turn problem
Covers are black and white
Indexing is a difference between the app and the e-reader. In my experience, the e-reader often fails to index, which is a problem if you're reading a non-fiction book, and want to make use of the search function. At the moment, you can't force reindexing of a single book. The only way to deal with it is to reboot the device, which reindexes all the books. This is a design flaw, in my view. The search function always works on the app, at least for me.
On the other hand, I would like the app to improve its "search library" function to provide a list view, rather than the array of book covers that it presents currently. You can't always read the title or author on the small cover thumbnail. If you click on a thumbnail, it will download the book to the device, which is often not what you want. Althought it's quicker to search your library with the app, the way the results are displayed is suboptimal, to say the least.
One other difference: when you upload a document to read (not purchased from the Kindle Store), it doesn't give you the remaining time in the chapter on the App, contrary to the device.
Didn’t know that!
Came for the info, stayed for the beard! 😎🔥
Ok I bought a kindle because my books are going to be in storage for a while and I tried reading on my phone but my eyes kept hurting within only a few hours. I’m a marathon reader. I read whole books sometimes in a single sitting so the screen not making my eyes hurt was worth it. If you’re a short term reader like only read for an hour or two a day it’s probably not worth it.
I read on both. I have a rather large library and find lately that my kindle app doesn’t cope so well with it any more. It just freezes up at times
Immersion feature . Yes .
The point about colour was good and I prefer to use a four colour highlight system when I can. Otherwise, for my needs, Kindle app only has the edge when I'm using a (a) a big iPad like the 12" Pro, and (b) I'm reading a text book with lots of figures and pictures. Those books don't display well on e-ink devices. For everything else, e-readers are my favourites.

Hope you’re doing well Bhai sahib.
My headphones broke so I’m in search of new ones. Any suggestions on some good high quality headphones for the best audio experience?

Great to hear from you :) I use my AirPods for everything. They aren't professional or anything, but they are so easy to use if you're in the Apple ecosystem.
Kindle too small for me . I like reading on min of 8" tablet. I know there are strong opinions in favor of the kindle. and that is fine by me. It is just not my own preference.
I wish sometimes you would donate or gift some of your e-readers to the people who aspire to buy one but sadly cannot. 😢
If they don’t understand why we use a Kindle, they don’t have to buy one.
So if I buy an e-reader like Onyx BOOX tab mini c-colored 8 "Eink Ereader Android 11 color kaleido3 or a BIGME-B751C 7" and install the Kindle application will I have all the features you described using a mobile phone? Thanks for your video.
