It's time for my 2017 Grand Tour to begin! Firstly I had to put in to Hillmorton Wharf for a fix of my leaking fuel pipes on the boat's Lister Petter LPWS4 engine, then it was off - very gently - to Braunston. This'll be a bit of an amble for the first few days as I'm scheduled to meet someone at Kilby near Leicester in the middle of the month.

Really good of you to save that little bird.
Watching your video's reminds me of the 50's and 60's when I was a lad, growing up with books from Rudyard Kippling and Alfred Lord Tennyson. I was an adventurous lad who read a lot and learned from reading. It's always a pleasure watching you go from place to place along life's journey on the water channels.
Thank you. So glad you like them :-)
You saved the bird and called the RSPCA! I knew I liked you! What a good egg!
The other two fluttering about might've been mum and dad wondering where their child had gone.
Your boat is always so immaculate (or as best as a boat can be!). Shows real pride. Good for you!
Haha, it's always tidied up before a video!!
Well done with the bird David, I am looking forward to your cruising I have learnt so much from you
The scale and state of the english waterways are truly amazing, a national treasure for sure! So glad I discovered your channel 👍
So glad to see you starting your spring/summer travels. Been looking forward this for several months. I too want to say that I absolutely loved the black and white "old film" section. Great choice!
Thank you :-)
Beautiful, tranquil English countryside, doesn’t get any better than that, in my book. Thanks David. 👍👏👏👏
"And these are horses... included for no particular reason."
LOL I love your dry sense of humor.
The silent film treatment in this one makes me giggle! I imagine that I like a lot of others have been finding levity and calm in your cruising vlogs during this pandemic. 😊
Gosh that was such an idyllic interlude! I envy your peace & quiet (as I write this the lawn guys are outside deploying their full panoply of 2-stroke, petrol-powered noisemakers.) The canal network is surely one of Britain's great national treasures.
It's not entirely quiet standing on the back with the engine throbbing away but I take your point!
All that work deserves some tea, or even a gin and tonic!
Great to see you back on the cut! and best of luck with the River ahead of you.
Not only nice videos, I love the language that you use.
:-)
so excited that its cruising time again... I've missed all the countryside and canal cruising... even if it's vicariously through your videos 😀
Loads more to come!
Great start to the new Cruising season. Thank you for choosing such a beautiful group of days for our enjoyment.
I do my humble best ;-)
Great video. I have been waiting all winter to see your new cruising videos. Hope to see many more videos you do a great job producing videos. I also enjoy just general videos about living on the boat. I have always enjoyed the water and great to see someone living on a boat full time. Looking forward to many more videos.
Thanks Brian!
Oh, that little white dove.
I really like and appreciate your acknowledgement and kindness to animals great and small. Thanks for that.
I called the RSPCA (in Sydney Australia) and the local wildlife group about an injured dove, one of those tawny brown, beautifully spotted ones with the feathered peak on their heads etcetera - neither of them would help me or the injured beastie because it wasn’t a “native species”.
I was devastated. I understood their reason, but it was still devastating.
I thought that the least they may have done would have been either to take the bird and humanly euthanised it, or given me some kind of advice on how to make it comfortable.
I would have taken it to a vet, but I just couldn’t afford to do that at that time.
As I explained, devastated 😐
All the best,
Barbie Hill

I’m new to this series but I am really enjoying it so far. Every time Braunston features in a video I get all nostalgic as I lived there until I was 7. I have very fond memories of the village shops, the church and, of course, walks along the tow path and around the marina with all the narrowboats. I have lived in Lancashire since leaving Braunston 18 years ago with only a couple of visits back since. I reckon I’m due another! Thank you for the great videos!
Loved the Buster Keaton interlude. You make my day.👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks again for a lovely video it brings back such happy memories
Great!
One of my fav o rite Vlogs. Will miss these.
Can see the headline now: “ Narrowboater trampled by angry cow during milking adventure” 😆
Recorded and edited with a Benny Hill Sound Track.
Have a nice journey, looking forward to follow you this year too!
Thanks!
I love a person who knows how to relax! @5:20 enjoy your boating-at least we all do anyway!🤣😃
Very picturesque! Picnics by sparkling water, daffodils, church bells with grazing sheep on the hillside...looking forward to the next video. :)
More of the same to come, ad infinitum!! :-)
Yay...out and about at last...looking lovely .....enjoy your trip David.👍👌😄
Cheers Monnie
Always a pleasure to live vicariously through you and your travels. Thank you for making such high quality videos. I spend far too much time watching them when I should be productive.
"Too much"?? No, no, keep watching :-)
I plan to. Productivity be damned
I always enjoy your videos. Because of you and a few other adventurers, I am able to vicariously travel the world in my retirement...and it doesn't cost me a penny. I have been cruising the canals with you and enjoying other adventures -- climbing to the summit of Everest, sailing the oceans to exotic locations, surfing at Waikiki, exploring China, and so many more. Of course, I must credit UA-cam for providing the venue for my vicarious explorations.
Sounds perfect - see the world yet always have a cup of tea at hand!!
Loved the old silent film effect!
A lovely film David. You certainly give the sense of peacefulness and tranquility. Great commentary and camera work.
So pleased to see you back out cruising again, I love to watch these videos wen eating my breakfast or lunch, so relaxing!
Glad you like them :-)
So glad to see you traveling. I really enjoy these videos. Best of luck on your travels this summer.
When you were cleaning out the well deck, I half expected Charlie Chaplin to come waddling into view to help you David !! And even though the cruise in this video was fairly short, I found it very relaxing to watch so thank you again - from a fairly chilly North London !!
So nice to see You on the move & good to see the old Lister is happy again :-) Such a lovely way to travel & appreciate the countryside, no fuss, no rush. Wishing You a pleasant journey & looking forward to the next episode :-) All the best, Hairy Paul, Ayrshire.
Thanks, Hairy Paul!!
I love the sound of the church bells in the distance....looks like a great start to your adventure, David!
For me, the greater the distance the better with church bells but it does make for a nice bit of video!!
Thumbs up! The black & white bit was brilliant. We will try to not be so tardy for your next episode. ~Mag & Dave
Haha, cheers :-)
Yes, finally the grand tour begins! (=nr. 83/239 on my binge)
So happy your back on the move.
The church bells sounded very pretty. Loved the "silent movie" footage of the clean up. A suggestion for future video ideas would be to go into the villages and film when you moor near them. Even if you are just going to shop, a quick look around would be nice. I'm from the US and find the British villages charming.
Mmm, I'd rather stick to canal stuff than make it a "history of Britain" channel but I did briefly do Braunston in last year's video. Glad you liked the video. Cheers
8:20 -- Grazing lambs and pealing bells -- beautiful
Just between you and me I can't abide church bells but it makes for a lovely bit of footage!
Oh my adding the black and white segment was a treat. I wish you well on your journey.
Initially I just added the music to the timelapse and then suddenly it seemed to demand "old film" styling!!
I am so envious of you, especially now the weather is changing.
One day I swear I will get on a narrowboat!
Have a lovely weekend and don't forget to film your exploits.
Take care xx
Oh, you must!
Thanks for uploading your travel video(s). We had a snow storm last week so allot of it is still melting. Seeing some proper spring is very cheerful.
We've had a bit of a run of lovely Spring days recently, it's not always this good but quite splendid :-)
Love the nostalgic sequence!! Very good big of VLOGing there! Such a beautiful bucolic Church scene too! WOW, Cheers and God bless
Thanks :-)
I quite enjoy your vlog. As I live in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and we have no canal system, I must live vicariously through you.
Thanks for tuning in :-)
Two excellent choice of moorings! Beautiful sounds of nature and beautiful sounds from the church bells. Wonderful!
Ha! I actually can't abide church bells but they do make for a nice bit of video.
We have a set (electronic of course but sound real) in my church in Eden NC (USA)... only used them during the Christmas season, but the neighbors got so upset that they petitioned for us to turn them off. Haven't been used in years.
Oh dear :-( I'd think Christmas might be the one exception but clearly not!
ah hard to beat the beautiful countryside. pure bliss.
:-)
Great to see you back to cruising..,What a nice countryside you have to look at every day. Look forward to this summer's adventure...vicariously of course.
Thanks for vicariously joining me :-)
My envy is becoming unmanageable at all of the serene cruising and pastoral scenes. I cruise my sailboat on the Puget Sound in Washington state, and avoiding death on the water is the main goal, at least until snug anchorage is attained
Ah! takes me back to a lovely two weeks on a hired narrow boat from Leighton Buzzard in May 2011. I am from Melbourne Australia. A friend, Rose, has spent a few years cruising solo on her narrow boat and had returned home about a year before my wife and I had a go. She told me she had spent winter in a town on a canal (didn't say which canal or which town) where she had joined the local church and choir. We were in Braunston on a Sunday and went to church. When we said where we were from the lady at the door told us of a boater from Melbourne who had stayed a few winters back. Of all the the towns on all the canals in merry England we had to walk into church where Rose had wintered.
By the way, Rose has written a series of novels about a mystical canal system where mystical characters move between their invisible canals and the real world saving the populous from evil forces. It's a bit like Harry Potter meets What Katie Did Next (don't tell her I said that). If interested, look up Rosalind Kentwell on Amazon.
yay great to see you back out and about cruising the cut !
Thanks Joanna!
Hi David, just discovered your channel yesterday . You will help me get through this covid 19 lockdown. Your presenting style and laid back demure is just what's needed at these crazy times. Always wanted to go on a canal boat holiday . Think it will be on my to do list after this crisis passes. Take care and stay well during these unprecedented times
Yup I'm going back to the classics re watching them to pass the time. Great vids.
A great start to your tour and the part where you cleaned the well deck was very entertaining. Can't wait for the next installment.
Thanks! Next one is underway :-)
Very much appreciate your vlog entries. This one was no exception. Cheers.
Ta
Wonderful video David, very relaxing and the English country side just as Constable painted it, Thank you.
:-)
I couldn't think of anything better than sitting in from little gypsy fire place with blanket around u all toasty an warm an it cold snowing out side as u gently rock to sleep. Im sooo jealous
Brilliant episode, thanks. I think an "old film" segment on you milking a cow along the canal bank would be a great contribution to your vlog. You'll need a short rope a peg and a three legged stool, oh and a bucket. Really looking forward to this. Greetings from still frozen Canada.
OK, don't hold your breath for that one...
I really like the simulated old time film sequence.
GREAT... nice to see you back on tour.
Thanks Andrew
Ahhhh, cruising again, jolly!
Brilliant speeded up sequence of you cleaning the well deck. I like that.
A really superb video.
Cheers Andrew
I love to see daffodils in the spring they let me know the warmer weather is coming
Loved every second many thanks.
:-)
Crap, I forgot to comment when I got home from work after watching that BRILLIANT April Fools Vlog... Well done. And glad to have the season start anew.... hope the first few weeks go smoothly!
Cheers, glad you liked the Fool video
Loved the Wind in the Willows references in this one David.
Great to see you back on the cut and look forward to many more videos to bring back memories, lived on the cut for six years :) :)
That's lovely to hear! Cheers
Its great to see you back out cruising. Just lovely countryside.
Some even lovelier stuff coming in a vlog or two.. ;-)
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, it is making me want to get a boat right now, but i must resist the temptation until i retire, so looking forward to the new cruising vlogs.
Buy in haste etc etc... !
I really envy you. You are double lucky. Living life in tranquility on a narrow boat and it's your Spring. Being in Johannesburg South Africa we heading towards Winter obviously, with everything slowly losing leaves and turning brown. Thanks for the great cruise video's, looking forward to many more, plus the interesting little bits of info you add in along the way. Have a good one David.
Thank you. Yes, more on the way soon!
Fantastic video, thank you! I am excited more than ever to take a Narrowboat vacation in the near future.
Excellent!
Good to see you back cruising, and with a bit of nice weather.
It's been utterly beautiful today and tomorrow's supposed to be much the same!
A great first vlog of the "Grand Tour 2017" (get your t-shirts here!), really enjoyed it. Very glad you got the diesel leaks on the injectors cleared up. That kind of thing would be a constant nagging at the back of my brain. Looking forward to both the river and the dreaded long tunnel episodes!
Just need to sort the oil leak now. Meanwhile I keep topping it up. It's not bad.
Delightful video thank you.
Lovely footage of being back on the cut for 2017. Hope you made the most of this weekends weather. Cheers for sharing .
Certainly did! Footage soon :-)
Hi David, Great to see you again...here's hoping that we find you in rude health and devilish good humour.
Absolutely love the videos--entertaining, witty, informative, and not without due measure of beauty. Something my wife and I look forward to with eager anticipation. It fires us up our yearning for our own forthcoming life on the cut--something we dearly wish to happen once we have sold this hovel! Hopefully by this time next year.
But for now we'll just have to watch and wish...ho hum.
Keep up the good works, and have a great bank holiday.
All the very best to you.
Thank you! What a lovely comment :-)
Nice to see you on the move again David, looking forward to seeing more of your travels.
More soon!
Glad to see you're out!
Look forward to your cruising season, CHEERS!!
Thanks Doug!
You've created a new world of narrow boats fans.. good job
We really need these canals in the States. It looks like a nice gentle and relaxed way of traveling. Oh I'm sure people on narrow boats have their trials and tribulation, but who doesn't?
By and large it's very easygoing but yes, you get the odd issue every now and then.
Watching this vlog made me realise that your engine is "Dave's Lister".
This tickled me just the right way.
Hahaha, I like it!
April 1st was a good laugh :-) Hope your having a nice sunny weekend this weekend...Nice Vlog mate :-)
Cheers Russ
CoffeeMate powder - the hermit's best friend - also good in tea.
Living up to your name again -- great stuff, as always.
Thanks Stephen :-)
Great Vlog! I hope you are enjoying the weather this weekend :)
Isn't it fantastic?! I've been having a lovely cruise :-) You?
Lovely! Unfortunately Bee is busy this weekend but I'm getting some work done while sitting on the roof.
:-)
Good to see you on the move. Looking foward to more canal cruising.
Cheers Gary
Whoop! You're back. Happy cruising. Cheers, Harry.
I haven't been away!!
I enjoy every video you put on line David, but the ones were you are on the move and visiting different places are the best. I guess for you it must be nice to have a change of surroundings as well. I particularly like your slow pace... what is the point of rushing!
Cheers Steve, yes I like the cruising ones best too :-)
Yer vids are always great viewing. Thanks for the fantastic content.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I'm looking forward to going boating on the canals in May. Seeing your video is just wetting my appetite.
Hope you have fun!
Hurrah, you're new Vlog Season has started. Looking forward to following your travels. Great start!
Cheers
fun to watch as well.
You never cease to get a chuckle out of me;)
Great David thats all I can say and looking forward to the rest of this years tour.
Cheers John
A Beautiful day, good to see you off on your journey.
Lovely vlog, made us feel nostalgic and a little bit jealous. We moored up in roughly the same spot last year.
So many lovely spots to choose!
"Included for not particular reason" is a wonderful reason. Very enjoyable! :)
Ta
Great vid as ever CTC. I've got my RYA Helmsman course this week, just hope I get 2 days of the same weather!
Don't get your hopes up, the forecast does not look promising :-(
appreciate you sharing all this information with us.
:-)
Really enjoyed the black and white film and accompanying music. I have a high stress job as a Federal Court Interpreter (SpanishEnglish), here on the U.S./Mexican border, and I watch your videos in my office between court sessions. I find them very relaxing, well done, well edited and overall enjoyable. Thank you. I would also mention that you look like a younger twin to my older brother who is currently 58 years old. We are American, but our surname is Robinson - so we must share some common ancestor, I'm sure.
Thank you
Outstanding video sir!
