Jerry Garcia's greatest gift was his ability to connect the listener with the song in such a way that you feel that the song is PART of you, an emotional directness. That is a rare trait in a musician. Plus, he could play that guitar, and write songs that will endure and be reinterpreted forever. He is Unique.

      magically, uncannily so.
i often joke that JG forever destroyed live music for me right out of the gate by virtue of his raw power and talent. started seeing him at 14 and he left an impossible to top high water mark forever etched inside my skull

Sweet Jesus those solo runs!! The sound of Angels Trumpets, the Sound of Lightning, a glass melting splendor that peels back the very Gates of Heaven..
Jerry was so much a flawed human man, and a true Master walking the earth together as one. Nothing like this early 90s era where his struggles with health and addiction and his unparalleled mastery of his instrument were all on display in this ghostly visage. These were the years when I knew and saw Jerry, this is MY Jerry - head down, silver mane a-blaze and blowing in the wind - unmoving, standing like a pillar and…..just. fucking. ripping.
What is it about the tone and melodic patterns he channels that are so emotional, so transcendent?
A feeling like laughing and crying all at once pours out of your heart like an unstoppable wave of spiritual water. You jump, and gasp, and laugh, and hug your friends and weep at the beauty of it.

Wow, your description of his last years is so amazing! You're a warrior poet! I think we all do this: we watch or listen to the early years of the Dead, but we all can't stop nor will ever stop watching his last years. We all are amazed at his mastery of the guitar but at the same time want to cry because he was in such rough shape! Thank you so much for your awesome post!

To carry on a tune for the majority of the song on one guitar. Who else does this ? I can listen to this day all day, but I leave it for special evenings when I am alone. It’s just me and Jerry.

what an amazing version! pealing off solo after solo after solo! holy help. I was blessed to have lived in the Bay for two years in the early ninties, nd saw many jerryband gigs at the warfield. This mission ( from Providence-you lucky fuckers) is pure beauty. glass melting prowess. How do so many comments deride such gift? yowza!! thanks for the post.....peace.

The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues
Fourteen years ago, I began writing The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues. It's the only book that combines all of Jerry's side band dates and the Grateful Dead's dates together by venue.
Alphabetically by state, there are over 1300 venues that include rehearsal, recording, performance, living spaces and planned/canceled show venues.
The history of each venue is here including architects, builders, owners, opening night performances and other notable appearances, murals, statues, stage prosceniums, backstage areas, pipe organs, secret rooms, hidden tunnels, restorations and demolitions.
Jerry's history at each venue includes the bands he played with, setlists, opening acts and other information giving the reader an idea of what went down at every date on every tour. In many cases via dated photos, what guitar Jerry was playing, and other anecdotal stuff that we love to read. I've added eyewitness reports to as many specific dates as possible. These are numerous, hysterical and heartwarming.
Thus far I‘ve collected over 1120 hi res venue photos approved by over 900 photographers. I've utilized college and public library special collections, historical societies, museums, Flickr and others. There aren't any Jerry photos, I have photos of the venues themselves to highlight where he played. Jerry owned over 130 musical instruments in his lifetime, giving away most of them. It's all chronicled in a 300 page section called Jerry's Musical Instruments.
Envision a two volume, 2400 page set protected in a slipcase, similar to an old bible. This is a book that resembles the records kept for medieval pilgrimages to holy sites. People will want to know centuries from now where it all took place...so there ya go!
On June 3rd the Kickstarter campaign launches with a cool little video starring me, and Jerry! That's where you can get the pre-purchase discount. I need your help to reach my goal in order to print this fantastic book. If I’m successful the book will be printed and ready in March 2024.

    WOW:
The last time I saw Jerry alive was in Dec 1990, in Denver. Two years later (in this video) he looks 10 years older. The spark is still there, in this show, but it hurts to watch the video.
This has always been on of my favorite songs. Thanks everyone.

He solo’d in intricate paragraphs of phrasings…..telling tales of epic hero’s journeys, far away to crystalline lands of inner darkness and longing and returning - swiftly, brightly unto the redemption of light. Whole worlds would build, bend and fall in his hands, his blazing angels tongue singing sand, melting to glass in holy syllables.

In the 90’s jerry sounded alot better with the JGB then with the dead. I think by 91/92 he was just over the grateful dead. Sadly if he could have gotten away from it he probably would have stuck around a bit longer.

6:13 Jerry’s in his special place and reaching deep inside for more.
Holy Lord, he reaches high up to You and shines Your Light upon us through his heart and strings.
Fucking loved when he did that.
Nobody shreds like him! Time, Space and Heaven stop breathlessly by and gather round to listen !

    • @craigmadara9077
      @craigmadara9077 3 роки тому

He's tired... He's worn out... He never wanted this type of success. He couldn't walk down a street without being being harassed... So, he did his thing.. Sucks, so bad. He just wanted to play music and be left alone.

    • @novakaya
      @novakaya 3 роки тому

Craig I hear you brother. Yes he was tired and needed a break. A big one.
But don’t think for a second that he wasn’t doing exactly what he wanted to and was born for. The success and fame of the GD was no mistake or accident. Those boys went for it hard and ate it up.
I’m close with his family and I’ve listened to countless hours of stories and them telling me about how intentional all of this was. Jerry had to be playing in front of people every night or he became restless, uncomfortable, in the early days always searching for a gig.
Now the deification that spun heads started putting upon him, just an incredibly talented spiritually connected but deeply flawed man-that became a burden he tried to escape.
Enjoy writing with you brother Craig. Thank you for your thoughts and insights. Keep going if you have more

@@novakaya So Interesting, and thank you so much for sharing that with me! Obviously, I was never a family friend and can't top your knowledge: nor am I trying... ever...Hahah. I just find it so interesting to watch and listen to the different decades of the Dead and see the differences. ( As we all do). Like any craftsman: your skills get better with time. I know his last years were rough but my god... some of my favorite jams were from this time and this song proves it! The omniscient wail of his guitar just takes me to another place. A very happy place!

    what a great singer.
need your book. takes forever to reference things online like capacity.... everyone go write Steve Parish ask him front Harry Angus amazing double encyclopedia volume on all of the places Jerry played, his guitars, history. you can see it online at jerry'sbrokendownpalace blogspot…. right? anyway, I really even just 4 days ago thought how handy it would be to have those sitting right beside me. boom open it and theres the reconstruction and the capacity and how many balconies were there. that stuff is so important. puts it in perspective for those like me watching a stage video years later.
11=11 : ) when I see 11:11 I touch the number if I can and wish "may all beings be happy, may all beings have profound love". obviously am a part of all beings cause I found this video. you only get what you give. anyway thank you for the video, you always have great ones, and yep let me know when your books are out
