I know I am a descendant of Nantucket and their whalers, as the oldest house on the island is the COFFIN House. And I am VERY proud of it. It has been more than 50 years since I have been to Nantucket , but I may still make another trip there before I, to am "Carried off by a whale.", as were several of my kin! Many of the first settlers were my kin. My full name is Captain Arthur Gardner Coffin, III. I am almost 78 now, but still feel the sea in my blood, as I have for many years.....God bless Nantucketers!
I am also related to some of the families. Starbucks, Folgers, Coffins, and I think Gardners (?). My great x8/9 grandparents are Gayer Starbuck and Rachel Folger. Nice to meet you cousin. :-)
Great video, a high school documentary that’s REALLY well done! I do wish, though that it touched on the devastating toll on ocean life that the near extinction of whales has caused.
5.33 - I see they mention the fate of the Essex in 1820 when it was stove and sunk in the Pacific Ocean by an enraged sperm whale bull. Henry Carlisle writes of what befell the men in his book 'A Custom of the Sea' which was first published under the title of 'The Jonah Man'. The ordeal suffered by Captain Pollard and the crew is well documented. Herman Melville based his book 'Moby Dick' on the story.
I’m reading that book for the third time. (by Nathaniel Philbrick) The movie is great but I always recommend reading the associated book for complete accuracy and incredible detail. Fascinating time of American history, to the near extinction of the beautiful whales. 🐳
.... that's it? One would have thought you would have elaborated on that a bit... according to every historian spoken to on Nantucket, not a single piece of this information is incorrect.

Hello from the Coffins in New Zealand. My 2 x Great Grandfather chased whales here and didn't go back.

Was this a school project? Amazing, informative video. I knew maybe 1% of the information you covered in this video.
Hi Morrison, thank you! Yes this was a high school project.
This was literally more informative and better structured than most things History Channel does these days. Hope you(r sister?) got an A for this!

If you guys wanna see a whaling movie I highly recommend watching in the heart of the sea

Thought this was about whaling industry....
you mean 18th and 19th century!
These whalers had a lot to do with early NZ .
Yes, my ancestor came here to NZ in the 1830s on a whaling ship
What the hell did the men do ! That didn't go on whaling ships??????
David Knight have a whole lot of lonely sex starve women to deal with
Coopers, shipbuilders, rope makers, fishing, farming, preachers etc.
This vid is more about strong women and racial equity than the whaling industry. Very disappointing !
Great video, poor title.
Hmm sorry you feel that way
Suggest a better title!
This history is not correct.
