  • Evaluation of the CanAm Spyder RT with a manual transmission. Having ridden 2-wheel motorcycles for over 50 yrs I'm interested to find out what a 3-wheeler is like with a 6-speed manual.
Many Thanks to Seminole PowerSports North in Eustis, FL to let me demo the bike and give an honest opinion. Thanks to Brandon for his assistance in presenting the Can Am RT and to the rest of the staff at Seminole PowerSports North for making me feel welcome...as they do everybody that walks through the door.

Do it still have a reverse gear since it has 6 gears? I'm a 40 year rider of motorcycles and currently own a Valkyrie my wife just bought a 2015 Can-Am Spyder RSS model, I drove it home it took a few minutes for my mind to adjust to the controls, as u stated the steering is the biggest thing for me to adjust to. It's semi-automatic that didn't bother me until slowing down when because the idle RPM's run high it feels like I'm goosing it during thru every gear as it's slowing down that was weird I had to just ignore that because that's how this particular model run that's normal. My overall view is it's a great bike in many many ways and it's faster than one might think however it's for my wife and she never learned how to ride motorcycle so the transition from her car was kinda quick. They are expensive but I understand why. With all the safety features, electronics, suspension & steering it's like driving a small car but with handle bars instead of a steering wheel.

Great for someone that's not too comfortable on 2 wheels but wants the "wind in your face" experience.

@@RobertMacCready Yep, she's definitely more comfortable than the Suzuki Burgman 650 she once had but never drove.

Thanks a lot for your video. In one week I will buy myself a Spyder and have to decide whether to use the manual gearshift or the semi-automatic. After riding motorcycles for 31 years (I'm now 60+), I will probably decide for the manual gearhift. I mean, when you switch from a motorcycle to a Spyder, you have 3 challenges: The semi-automatic, the only foot brake and the gyro forces in curves. With the manual gearshift I don't need to think about it anymore - it's automatic. One challenge has disappeared. That means you can concentrate more on braking with the single foot brake. And that becomes easier with the manual gearshift, because we motorcyclists are using the engine brake from the beginning. Now I have heard during the whole video that the gear shifting is so well, smooth and exact - thanks - this confirms my opinion and I will buy the Spyder with the manual gearshift

It's a few years since I did what you're doing - taking a test ride. I should have bought the machine but my pride over what I thought my trade was worth wouldn't let me do it. The one thing I recall is there are so many safety features built in that the machine tries hard to compensate for bad driving or lack of knowledge. Of course the machine doesn't lean but you can lean your body into the turns. You're right about the soft hands - the softer the better especially on the throttle. The one I test rode had the semi automatic paddle shift gearbox. I say semi automatic because you have to upshift using your thumb on a button on the left handle bar but if you close the throttle the transmission downshifts for you. There is a button on the same handle bar that you use your finger to operate. I know some purists look down on these as not being proper bike but when you reach a certain age getting a big 400kg bike off the stand to set off for the day becomes difficult. If you still want to ride you can; a) get a smaller bike (not really) or b) consider a Spyder which is what I would do. Thanks for your review.

It is very nice. I’m thinking about buying one this year. They are all autos now, no more manual transmission. Subbing.

I like the outlaw style trikes a lot better with long forks and a springer front end, Harley style rocker shifter, but these reverse trikes with a manual would be my strong preference over those semiautomatic models.

Reverse on Spyder manual transmission is down from the first gear. You have to hold down the round button on the top of the left cube switch while you shift in to the reverse.
