  • The Maltese Tenor Joseph Calleja sings 'Torna a Surriento' during his Annual Concert in Malta in 2016.
'Torna a Surriento' is one of the most popular songs of the traditional Neapolitan genre composed in 1902 by Italian musician Ernesto de Curtis to the words of his brother Giambattista de Curtis.
Joseph Calleja has teamed up with Bank of Valletta to set up the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation - a foundation whoseattention is tuned to underprivileged children and children with innovative, distinctive or unique artistic or musical talents who are in any way unable to develop or enhance their talents.

    The Lyrics
    Vide'o mare quant’è bello,
    spira tantu sentimento,
Comme tu a chi tiene mente,
    Ca scetato 'o faie sunnà.
    Guarda gua' chistu ciardino;
    Siente, sie’ sti sciure arance:
    Nu profumo accussi fino
Dinto 'o core se ne va…
E tu dice: "I’ parto, addio!"
    T’alluntane da stu core…
    Da sta terra de l’ammore…
Tiene 'o core 'e nun turnà?
    Vid'o mare de Surriento,
    che tesoro tene nfunno:
chi ha girato tutto 'o munno
    nun l'ha visto comme'a ccà.
    Vid'o attuorno sti Serene,
    ca te guardano 'ncantate,
    e te vonno tantu bene...
    Te vulessero vaga.
E tu dice: "I' parto, addio!"
    T'alluntane da stu core
    Da sta terra de l'ammore
Tiene 'o core 'e nun turnà?
    Ma nun me lassà,
    Nun darme stu turmiento!
    Torna a Surriento,
    Famme campà!
