Years ago I used only prime lenses because the image quality of zooms was quite poor. Now, except for macro, I only use zoom lenses -- much more versatile, smaller, lighter and less expensive; their image quality is more than adequate for my purposes. Have always enjoyed your videos and seeing the birds from "down under", please keep up the good work.
Interesting comparison. I keep thinking about getting a prime lens but the versatility of a zoom (and the cost) is hard to beat. And considering how much better the zoom lens image quality has improved over the last few years it may be some time before I do get a prime. And as always thank you for including your raw images with the edits! I learn a lot seeing the difference between the two.
Always enjoy your videos. Love seeing the pleasure you get while shooting birds. I get the same feeling from landscape photography. Keep up the great work!
After watching this video, I did my own test using my Canon R and the RF 100-500 attached to a 1.4x extender. Without digging into the technical details, setting a camera to a crop sensor mode mostly makes sense if your images will remain in digital form- as in posted online, used for desktop backgrounds, edited into a video, or shared on social media. What I found in my particular set up, was that the crop sensor mode cut the RAW file size by about 55 percent. (Using dual Pixel made no measurable difference, nor did the scaled back CRAW setting.) Even converting them to a 300dpi tif file left the final size of the image less than half the size of the full sensor mode. With that in mind, they will still print fine up to about 8x10 inches but the cropped images begin to deteriorate as I pressed them up to 11x14 inches and beyond. Basically, to use or not use the crop mode comes down to the intended use of the final image. There are also other issues when it comes to substantial edits that may or may not be required. Smaller files means fewer pixels on the pallet which therefore limits some fine tuning options in post editing. If I had to choose between a small perfect image or a large one that needed some work, I would go with the larger one every time without hesitation. (And yes, I am well versed in using Topaz Gigapixel but even that amazing tool has it's limits.) As for the prime lenses, I can afford them but I opted for the vastly more versatile (and much lighter on a hike) zoom lens. There are dozens of shooting scenarios where the 100-500 is more than adequate compared to perhaps a handful where a prime lens would make a substantial difference.
Mate, totally agree and I personally don't use the crop mode as I prefer to crop in post and try to keep my images bigger then 4000px. I used the crop mode in this video to highlight what the R7 field of view will look like and that you can if needed use the 17mp R5 crop mode if you wanted say a higher buffer, smaller files. Also agree about what purpose we are using the photos for, I am quite happy to crop heavily to display on the web etc but like you say printed images are much better if we have adequate resolution to start with. Cheers, Duade
Nice comparison amongst an abundance of wildlife. In long lenses I think sacrificing a little IQ is worthwhile for the versatility of the zoom over a prime. Maybe not the same argument with shorter lenses, although I still love my zooms. Magnificent shot of the little bird in the grass at the end.
Thanks Heath, I got it from China via Alibaba, its 3M so quality is great but it takes a long time to come via post and it takes a long long time to apply as it's like a jigsaw puzzle. I think you maybe able to get the same thing a little more expensive and quicker elsewhere. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html Cheers, Duade
Great video again. To answer your question, I'll take a habitat shot over a portrait shot devoid of context any day. For me it's nature photography - I want to give a sense of the bird in its natural environment, preferably doing its natural behaviours. The portrait shot with the bokeh-ed background is a fetish that doesn't do it for me.
Thanks Marcus, I appreciate the feedback and appreciate your input. I am happily exploring my photography at the moment trying to include more habitat when I can. I think the zoom lens has been a real breath of fresh air and has allowed me to try different shots. Cheers, Duade
G'day mate ! Once again a great joy to watch !! In the beginning while it's still dark, you seem to be scaring away some kangaroos, but later they return for some very sweet poses :-D And the birds were in all interpretations Duade-level ;-) Because of versatility and weight, in combination with the newest cameras dealing much better with low light and slower glass, zooms are certainly gaining territory. And in this versatility corner, I recently encountered cases where I was using a 2x on my 100-400Lii and needed to zoom out again to like 300mm to avoid clipping wings when a blue heron was close and started flying. With the in general better 100-500 this would not be possible with any extender mounted on it. I'm really rooting for Canon to bring us their patented 300-800L/8 (which might be a fixed aperture lens to save weight, and which I expect at a similar price and weight as the 100-500). That would be an awesome complementary lens to both 100-400 and 100-500, as well as good killer for the 200-600 from the competition. With the R7 in mind, I loved your Heron comparison where R6+1.4+500 and R5-cropped+500 have about the same amount of pixels on the bird. And first sight the R5 image looked sharper, but that increased sharpness was mainly in the background because as far as bokeh is concerned, we were seeing 700mm against 500mm (and not 800mm). And this was a bigger bokeh difference than I expected. Very similar, the R6 with a 2x will have the same amount of pixels on the bird as the R7, regardless of the used lens. This video already predicts the R6 plus 2x will clearly win the bokeh contest against the R7. The open question will be how the R7 will perform in low light, and whether here the higher pixel density or the sensor will come at bigger IQ penalty compared to adding a 2x on the R6 ..
Thanks Werner, yes the 100-500 restriction with a 1.4 is huge design flaw and very annoying. Yes, I was surprised with the DOF difference also but to be expected I guess comparing 700mm vs 500mm as you mentioned. The R7 RF100-500 wont get the same background that is for sure but the bird should have plenty of detail. I look forward to comparing the R7 to the R5/R6 to see where it has an advantage or weakness. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Maybe this was a specific case where the DOF difference was more obvious than some other cases: when the heron had just one meter more distance from the background (meaning one meter closer to you), it might already have been less visible. But when 700mm vs 500mm can already be this visible, than 800mm vs 400mm will be obvious in more cases still ..
I like the “habitat” shots, I think it’s more natural. About zoom lenses, I think another advantage of zoom lenses is that they make it easier to find the bird in your viewfinder by zooming out to get a wider view, then zooming in for the shot once you have the bird in view.
As usual, very informative. Thanks Duade. I have my R6 attached to my 500mm f4 but I am finding I rarely take a shot with it since I paired the RF100-400 and 1.4 TC on the R5. I really like the weight difference. I wanted the 500mm for so long and finally bought a good used one five years ago I hate to abandoned it. I am thinking the light weight 100-400 that you previewed might get used more often. We’ll see. Keep up the great videos.🇨🇦👏🏻
Thanks Larry, yes, the weight and size make it a pleasure. I too have found myself reaching for the zoom out of convenience and ease of use. Cheers, Duade
Interesting video Duade, I do love my 100-500mm. I’m often out with friends with their big expensive primes, so lens envy abounds. I noticed your protective covering on your 100-500mm, and I I’m noticing that my lens could really need this, could you tell me who supplied it and did you apply it yourself? Thanks Duade. Oh, I loved the habitat photo.
Thanks, I got it from China via Alibaba, takes a while to come by post but quality is great being 3M. Just be prepared it takes a number of hours to apply and is like a puzzle. I am not that happy with the colour of the camo I got and would probably opt for a different pattern if I chose again. Here is the link bit.ly/3szEINM Cheers, Duade
Duade thanks again for a great video. I like how you used the IFOOTAGE 71" Carbon Fiber Camera Monopod - Tripod. I bought one and have gone out 4-5 times now with it and just love using it for my Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600 as I tend to walk and shoot. No more back aching after 3-4 hours of camera and lens on my neck. If I come to an area, I still can "get low" and can use the Tripod as you showed. I like the zoom myself and will be very interested in an R5 and R7 comparison as you did with each having a 100-500 lens when the R7 becomes readily available. I myself generally prefer habitat shots. The Canon R5, the Canon RF100-5000 lens, and add the 1.4 Converter - seems almost a perfect combo and really seems hard to beat, but there is cost as you know. As much as I enjoy going out and shooting I would hate to say maybe I should have gotten the R5 vs R7 - as in buyers remorse. I will be doing a lot of research in the next several months as people use and review the R7 before I "pay the bill" on whatever choice I make. So will see as Christmas is still months away :) Again always appreciate these types of comparisons and real working results. Thank You.
Thanks Bruce, great to hear the monopod is helping reduce that weight out in the field. I agree they are very useful when walking around. Good strategy waiting to see how the R7 turns out, I will be getting it an doing some videos so hopefully I will be able to answer any questions you might have. Cheers, Duade
I used to shoot wild life with two bodies a FF and a crop. One body would have a long prime (600) and the other a shorter zoom (100-400 or 70-200). I suspect a lot depends on how far/large are your subjects. Both FF/crop and prime/zoom have their place I don't see this as either or. If money/weight wasn't an issue I would go for two FF bodies. So that the controls, raws, etc. are the same. But a second R5 is too expensive. This will be the main reason I would consider an R7.
Great comparison. Me too waiting for the r7 to compliment my r6. It will be on my EF600mm II version and my r6 will be on my 100-400mm II zoom lens. Can you make a video comparison between canon RF adapter vs Viltrox adapter?
Duade, why would you use crop mode with the R5 or any full-frame? Crop mode does not put more MPs on your subject. We can accomplish the same effect by simply cropping in post. Also, crop mode on a full-frame restricts the available AF area. Is there a benefit that I am missing?
The only benefit I can think of is the bird is bigger in the EVF which may help people to find it and perhaps focus on it easier. The smaller files would also increase the buffer. But for me I don't use it as I would prefer cropping in post. I think I used it in this video to highlight what an APSC body like the R7 would look like as I did not have the R7 at the time. Cheers, Duade
Thank you very much for another awesomw video. I own an R5 and the Canon RF 100-500 and I want using my customize buttoms to put the full and 1,6 crop ind the ring of the lens, I done that and nothing happens, I'm missing something? thnak you very much Duade
Marcelo, just check you don't have to have the front shutter button half depressed at the same time as turning the ring for it to work. I have placed the crop mode on the front button that your right middle finger can touch easily. Cheers, Duade
Perhaps in a future video use the same body (e.g. R5 uncropped) with zoom and prime at 500mm with and without 1.4x and focus more on the IQ comparisons of the resulting raws.
As a happy R5+RF100-500 owner, I still lust for the EF600mm f4 II as I find myself wanting more bokeh and light - especially in the morning hours - but for now really can’t afford it.
I liked your habitat shot towards the end. Actually, I would have been pleased had I taken all of the images you showed. Obviously the bokeh created by a prime helps make even an "ordinary" bird photo look special but I prefer the flexibility of a zoom. With all the specialty digital "filters" built into superzoom cameras I wonder how hard it would be for software engineers to create a "prime bokeh" digital filter for crop sensor cameras?
So what you're saying is, with the zoom, it is easier to capture inferior IQ photos? Give me the superior IQ potential every time. The 500mm f/4 on the R5 is my choice.
Thanks, yes, the prime has better IQ but it means you might miss a certain shot, would you rather miss the shot completely or have a shot that is almost as good as a prime? I will use the Prime the majority of the time but the zoom has its place for sure. Cheers, Duade
I agree with you that the zoom offers more latitude and creativity. With the Heron it’s a good thing that you could exit crop mode to get the shot which you can’t do on the R7! Lol! With that said I’m going to get the R7 and use it on my 100-400 which doesn’t have the limitations of the 100-500. You also made me think about the Sony 200-600 and the versatility that would offer using the Sony a6600 or any full frame camera. I just wish I could adapt the Sony to my Canon camera like I could adapt my Canon lenses to Sony bodies! Lol!
Thanks James, yes, I think if I had the R7 I would likely avoid using the 1.4 due to that limitation unless I knew the bird wouldn't come close. Yes, the Sony 200-600 is wonderful and if Sony released a modern APSC camera with eye tracking I would be tempted to pick up that combo. Cheers, Duade
Thanks Dman, the wrap is found here www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html it is from China so the post is very slow and it is like a jigsaw puzzle putting it together. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade. Mark smith, another UA-camr and bird photographer, indicated that the r5 struggles with autofocus when dealing with birds near the water. He tries to capture the birds as it just hits the water trying to catch a fish so it might not be the same as your images from a very low angle. However have you noticed this or heard of this? Thank you.
good day, your videos are very nice to follow and i want to start again myself. i used to have a canon 7d, now i'm looking at a canon 7dii. (for bird/wildlife) is this still a good second-hand or do you have another option here? other brands are also welcome. thanks!
G'day Kristof, yes, the 7D2 is still a good affordable option if you already have Canon glass. The 90D is also an option and getting cheaper. The D500 is probably the best Nikon APSC body but might be a bit more expensive. The R10 is also an option if you want eye tracking etc. Good luck, Cheers, Duade
Tnx very nice. Do you see a difference in post-processing the cropped R5 raw files compared to its uncropped raws? E.g. in terms of dynamic range, noise?
Yeah you cannot continue to crop the cropped R5 image if you know what I mean. But no difference in dynamic range etc. I dont usually use crop mode, I would rather crop in post. Cheers, Duade
I have no idea how did you manage with two cameras plus the cameras that you use for capturing yourself. Thank you so much for great comparison demonstration.
Lovely video! It's nice to see photos of habitat as well, especially for person not from Australia :). What kind of cover you have on zoom lens? :) Keep up the great work!
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support, I got it from China via Aliexpress, its 3M so quality is great but it takes a long time to come via post and it takes a long long time to apply as it's like a jigsaw puzzle. I think you maybe able to get the same thing a little more expensive and quicker elsewhere. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html Cheers, Duade
Been using Zooms for several years and now have Canon 200-400 and recently purchased 100-500. Main reason is that much of my photography requires focal length versatility-hides and stalking. I remember working with otters on the shore. My companion had a fixed 500 and ended up with just head shots whereas I could frame the otter in a variety of ways. The 100-500 is becoming my go to lens- weight and quality
The way you move from video to finished photo to RAW file is so unique and so informative. It's a more effective approach for me in some psychological way. I don't think I can explain really what I mean but I will just say that flowing from the finished photo into the RAW, as opposed to the other way around, seems much better as a teaching aid, to me at least. I have never seen another photographer present things like that. I really connect with the way you explain things.
Hi Ben, It is exactly the same and I don't usually shoot in crop mode as I prefer to do it in post. I just wanted to show what the R7 would look like when it comes. The only advantage to crop mode is you increase the buffer size and the subject is bigger in the viewfinder. Cheers, Duade
G'day Jon, it is a 3M skin that you can get online, it is a real puzzle to put on and took hours but should prevent scratches etc. Got mine from China here, takes a while via slow post but quality is fine. bit.ly/3szEINM Cheers, Duade
Great shots. The R7 is an interesting proposition. Do you plan on selling one of the full-frame bodies if you get the R7, or getting it as a supplement?
I like both..the big heavy prime for the times when your not moving around much and the zoom for the times when you need the flexibility of hand held and portability…. Madly saving for the 100-500RF which will be much lighter than the Sigma 150-600 sport.
On a perch or in the environment? I think both have their advantages. By the way, at 12:44 The on-screen text says "whate faced heron". Never heard of that one.
Great video Duade, the videography with the drone shots at the start was as epic as the light! I'm praying that the r7's sensor ISO is on par with the r6/r7. I would prefer the r7 as 90%+ of my shots are cropped. Rumour has it that the sensor is the same as the d90, I really hope that isn't the case as the ISO isn't great. All the best!
Thanks Ruairi, I too hope the R7 has an updated 32mp sensor but somehow I think we will get the 90D sensor. I suspect it will be between 1-2 stops worse then the R6 in low light conditions. I will be getting the camera as soon as I can and the ISO test will be one of the first things I compare. Cheers, Duade
Loved the bird in the reeds. The crane taking off was awesome. I don’t know enough about the prime and the zoom to say anything about them. Ill need to do a little research.
Henrik, its a 3m sticker that I got from China via Alibaba, it is a great product but takes a number of hours and patience to apply, I am also not that happy with the colour and design but they have a number of different options. You can check it out here, just be prepared to wait awhile for it to arrive. Cheers, Duade bit.ly/3szEINM
Hello there,i always enjoying your great video’s….and i am all so saving for the RF100-500 lens😊. Question for you is: Do you need the monitor on the camera with the the extender setup plus crop mode? Love all things in nature by the way❤
Luckily we don't get Crocs down south were I am and the snakes generally avoid humans, just have to make sure you look where you are going. Cheers, Duade

Jodi, I suspect every mirrorless camera from here on will have it as it is an integral feature and makes it so much easier to focus. But Canon do have their cripple hammer so who knows. Cheers, Duade
I picked it up from here www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html It is in China so postage is very slow but quality was fine. Also it takes a few hours to put on and is like a puzzle. Cheers, Duade
I'm going to save myself the enormous cost of a big prime and stick with my R5 with 100-500. Thinking about getting the R10 to replace my wife's rebel t7i. She might let me borrow it from time to time.
Hi Duade, i really like your videos and your photos. While looking this last video i was wondering if you have ever made a video on your photo editing. I like your colors compared to original RAW and wonder if you have any favorite LR presets or other standard practices. Any thoughts on this? I use R6, RF100-500 alot (sometimes RF 70-200L2.8 from hides). Kind regards, Petri
Oh dear, right after posting i did find your Editing Bird Photos video.. Anyway, if you have any additional thoughts, videos or suggestions for some good presets, i would be happy to hear... Cheers, Petri
Good morning from Vancouver Island in BC Duade. Enjoyed your video this morning and decided to do something similar heading out today. Mounted my RF 100 to 500 on my R5 and my EF 500 on my 7D2. So far pretty quiet for my target bird, the Pacific Loon. Noted your cover for this video says 700mm vs 700mm but as you mentioned in the video the 500mm at 1.6 is actually 800mm equivalent. Just so you know we pay attention. All the best.
Nice to hear you are out and about with your gear. My wifes family are from BC and her grandparents were from VI. Yes, I used a few different focal lengths and different field of views. In the end with the 1.4 converter on the 100-500 had 700mm focal length which when times by 1.6 gives us 1120 field of view which is pretty crazy. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Yes I see you did use a converter on the 100-500 as well as the crop setting. Thx. Rain stopped, light was great but the loons stayed at least 1 km away! Will try again later in the week. Cheers mate.
Hi Duade, great info as usual, although I'm always trying to convert your info to Nikon 'speak'. .. Could you please identify and supply a link to the camo skin that you have your 100-500mm lens wrapped in please? Thanks mate. Bruce.
Bruce, I got the camo from China via Alibaba so be prepared to wait awhile, it is also very time consuming to apply but will protect the lens. The product works very well but I am not that happy with the camo I got, just a bit too purple and bright. There are other options though that might be better. Cheers, Duade bit.ly/3szEINM
Hi Duade, A joy to watch even if a person has never picked up a camera. The cisticola is wonderful because of the mystical atmosphere. I too like a little more context. I am still on my starter camera, a bridge camera with a 600mm equivalent zoom. but the limitations are creeping up on me. I like the little birds and after hundreds of shots of wrens I have only a few keepers. I am thinking that an entry level APSC or micro 4/3 with a budget zoom may take the quality up a notch without sacrificing mobility. My budget is very very tight (< $2000) and weight is an issue. Maybe your viewers have some suggestions?
@@Duade Thanks. I will research this option. I looked back at your video using 40D and Sigma 150-600mm. I then started researching 70D prices. There are plenty of used ones around. I just wonder about the weight with a Sigma because I expect to mostly shot hand held and at 68 my hands aren't that steady anymore.
Again and again, thank you for such interesting video. I would have loved to use the crop mode on my R5 in combination of my new RF100-500. It is autumn here in Sweden days are getting shorter... So I believe I will have the opportunity to test the crop mode this winter in a sunny day... It is quite nice birds especially in February... When I look at your videos I see lot of passion that you share... Thank you for this. 😊
Top drawer as always ,,,,,, Prime is for fixed stationary targets Where'as the Zoom is for moving targets because you can move the lense to compensate the Target you are capturing .. it's how i view the difference between such lenses . Mind you I wish i could afford an expensive lense Question for all ... With inflation affect prices .. and increasing Energy bills .. Is such price rises .. affecting your intended gear purchases and is it making it harder for you to save .
Thanks Colin, yes, there are pros and cons for both. Yep, inflation is heading to 6% down here this year which makes it a lot harder for everything, especially as wages are not rising by the same amount. Cheers, Duade
They are 3m stickers that you can get online, I got mine from China and it takes ages and its like a jigsaw to put together. You can also get the neoprene version from naturescapes. Cheers, Duade www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html
Thank You again for a stellar review. Now I made a big move and traded all my Sony gear to Canon EF 600mm ll ,it is expensive but in perfect condition. So now I have both options ,my RF zooms are 100-500mm and the light 100-400mm. My bodies are R6 mark ll and the old 10mpx 40D. Maybe Im gonna miss my fantastic Sony gear but the 600mm ll was like new ,so could not resist ....
The R5 is 17mp in crop mode and the R7 will be 32mp so way more pixels on the subject and you will have bigger files. You also get 15/30 fps and likely a bigger buffer then the 12/20 of the R5. Also, possible there might be AF improvements from the R3 but unlikely. It is also much cheaper then the R5. Cheers, Duade
In my part of the world, if you set yourself on the water edge to take pictures of wild birds, they will find the equipment but not you. Courtesy of the Nile Crocodile. I am enjoying working with my 500mm f4 II , from a safe distance of course.
Johnathan, I got it from here www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html It is from China so takes a while via post. Quality is very good being 3M but be warned it takes a number of hours to put on as its like a jigsaw puzzle. Cheers, Duade
Great video Duade lots of wonderful pictures, must say really liked the last image of the Golden-headed Cisticola, the cameras these days are amazing to how they pick up the eyes when focusing, my Nikon D3 and 600mm f4 af-s would have trouble I think, might need to update and get lighter gear getting old, thanks again love how you share your knowledge to all of us I know it’s helped me a lot, cheers Mate Brendan.
Hi Duade, thanks for the great video. I own the R5, 100-500 and the 1.4x extender. Regarding photo quality, do you think that R7 + 100-500 will be better than R5 + 100-500 with 1.4x extender? Say if they both shoot at the 700mm equivalent focal length?
G'day I hope to find out soon. The R5 will always have an advantage if you can get close and get those 45mp on the subject. It's ISO performance will be better as well. The R7 for its price will compete well and especially when the bird is a little ways off. I look forward to testing the R7 when it comes. Cheers, Duade 👍
I’m Lumix G9 user. And after watching your movie I’m sure that FF camera is a lot better for wildlife photo. It’s time to change the gear… And your photos are great!
Marek, yes, FF does have benefits, but the MFT cameras and lenses do offer weight and cost savings. Do you have a 100-400 for your camera? That might help. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Yes, I have PanaLeica 100-400. With G9 it is great combo. But the problem is of course high ISO, DOF and bokeh also looks better with FF. However, as I can see, most of pro photographers are using FF, not M4/3. It would be great if you could compare two systems FF and M4/3 in the field. BR
Loved this video! What a variety at one watering hole. I really liked the habitat shot at the end. I'm thinking a zoom might be the best for me for a bit more versatility.
Great description of some of my classic dilemmas; 500 at f4 or zoom to 500 at 5.6. Crop or full frame, TC or no? Light levels, shutter speed, ISO, stationary, action - so many variables. Nice solution - 2 kits side by side, until you need to move - doh! Never a single answer; usually just a best guess for the situation and go with it. Thanks!
Thanks Duade I could watch these videos all day. It’s either or for me I liked photos from both the prime and the zoom they are both winners. I recently purchased from KEH in the States A 1990s era Sigma 400EF prime And a pro master 2x converter. I’m enjoying this set up as much as I do the Canon L-series primes Thanks I appreciate all your content
@@Duade it may well be fairly damp on the excursions. Many of the places we visit around Brisbane have been closed since the floods because of track damage. Not sure about the Gold Coast. I’m armed with a poncho and some disposable shower/hat caps for my camera incase we get caught out.
hi, loving the channel, very inspiring, i am quite new to this hobby and overwhelmed with all the camera and lens options, any advice on what to look for or any recommendations?
@@welsh5546 I think Mirrorless is the future so the upcoming R7 and RF100-500 or perhaps the Sony A74 and Sony 200-600. A more affordable option would be say the upcoming R10 and RF100-400 or perhaps a DSLR with the Nikon D500 and Sigma 150-600C being a great option. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade, I really enjoyed this video, I felt like I was there with you. I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but why would the R7 be better than the R5 in 1:6 crop mode?
Thanks Elspeth, the R5 is 17mp (in crop mode) whereas the R7 will be 32.5mp giving you more pixels on the subject. It will also offer 15fps mechanical over the 12fps of the R5. It will also be a lot cheaper than the R5. Cheers, Duade
Very interested in this as I plan to add a second body later this year (I Have the R5). I am toying with adding a big prime 400, 500 or 600. Used, adapted EF or a new RF are my big questions ??? Between you and Jan I suppose I will get the info I need to make the call. Thanks !!
Hello Dan, I have used my 500 LF4 MKII with a 1.4extender on an R5 with absolutely no problem. All you need is the RF adapter. You can pick up second hand copies and save yourself a lot of money against a new RF prime. At the moment the only RF primes are 600mm (and 800) and they are expensive - a very serious outlay. There is also quite a supply problem with long waiting lists. I believe Canon will bring out RF versions of the 500 in the not too distant future. IF you buy secondhand - you could potentially use the money you save to get a second body as well. Hope this helps.
Dan, I suspect the R7 and 500 f4II will offer you a very nice package for small birds, shorebirds etc. The R5 100-500 for walking around, landscapes, butterflies etc. Kind of two kits for two different uses. Cheers, Duade
@@DanBetty Well done Dan, it is a wonderful lens. I forgot to mention it but the IS works a little harder on the 500 when paired with a mirrorless. You will notice it is on a lot more than with a DSLR, just don't want you thinking it is broken, the noise is normal and you soon forget about it over time. Just for your piece of mind :-)
Great job as always Duade. I currently own the beautiful 100-500. Cant wait to pair it with the new r7 for that bit more reach and also more mp to allow further cropping in post. Very exciting!
Great job duade,I use 100-400 ll lens at 5.6 i don't know if 100-500 at 7.1 would be worth it for me,what are your thoughts,I too are waiting for the r7,cheers
Wayne, if you have the 100-400 and a 1.4 they work very well on Mirrorless and would be great on the upcoming R7. The RF100-500 is better then the 100-400 but it is very expensive and probably not necessary if you enjoy your 100-400. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade cheers duade, all we are hearing at the moment about the r7 is it is no secusser to the 7d2,we all would be very interested to hear your thoughts.
Beautiful work Duade.
Thanks mate, I appreciate it, Cheers, Duade
Years ago I used only prime lenses because the image quality of zooms was quite poor. Now, except for macro, I only use zoom lenses -- much more versatile, smaller, lighter and less expensive; their image quality is more than adequate for my purposes. Have always enjoyed your videos and seeing the birds from "down under", please keep up the good work.
Thanks Woody, I agree, the quality of the latest zooms is really quite remarkable. Cheers, Duade
Thanks Louisa, yes, zooms just continue to improve over time and are very good, Cheers, Duade
Always enjoy your videos. Love seeing the pleasure you get while shooting birds. I get the same feeling from landscape photography. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Tom, great to hear, its funny how we all love photography but many of us like different styles which is great. Cheers, Duade
(And yes, I am well versed in using Topaz Gigapixel but even that amazing tool has it's limits.)
As for the prime lenses, I can afford them but I opted for the vastly more versatile (and much lighter on a hike) zoom lens.
Thanks Chris, yes, the Cisticola is proving very popular, Cheers, Duade
Excellent comparison video Duade, thank you. I'm curious where you got that lens skin for the RF100-500?
In the beginning while it's still dark, you seem to be scaring away some kangaroos, but later they return for some very sweet poses :-D And the birds were in all interpretations Duade-level ;-)
Because of versatility and weight, in combination with the newest cameras dealing much better with low light and slower glass, zooms are certainly gaining territory.
Thanks Tim, totally agree, I just used the 800 on the R7 and it was a bit of a nightmare trying to find close birds. Cheers, Duade
Do you sometimes have the idea that you do not need that lens but that you want it? :)
Lol, I think we all do Rob, Cheers, Duade
As usual, very informative. Thanks Duade. I have my R6 attached to my 500mm f4 but I am finding I rarely take a shot with it since I paired the RF100-400 and 1.4 TC on the R5. I really like the weight difference. I wanted the 500mm for so long and finally bought a good used one five years ago I hate to abandoned it. I am thinking the light weight 100-400 that you previewed might get used more often. We’ll see. Keep up the great videos.🇨🇦👏🏻
That should say RF100-500 and 1.4 TC on the R5.
Thanks Larry, yes, the weight and size make it a pleasure. I too have found myself reaching for the zoom out of convenience and ease of use. Cheers, Duade
Love the shot of the White Faced Heron in flight....I like the zoom...the versatility in shots...THank you! =D
Thanks, yes, I was happy to nail that shot, Cheers, Duade
Interesting video Duade, I do love my 100-500mm. I’m often out with friends with their big expensive primes, so lens envy abounds. I noticed your protective covering on your 100-500mm, and I I’m noticing that my lens could really need this, could you tell me who supplied it and did you apply it yourself? Thanks Duade. Oh, I loved the habitat photo.
Me too, what is the lens covering please?
Thanks, I got it from China via Alibaba, takes a while to come by post but quality is great being 3M. Just be prepared it takes a number of hours to apply and is like a puzzle. I am not that happy with the colour of the camo I got and would probably opt for a different pattern if I chose again. Here is the link bit.ly/3szEINM Cheers, Duade
Dave, got from Alibaba here, it takes ages to come by post though. bit.ly/3szEINM
@@Duade Thanks Duade, always learn a lot from your channel, much appreciated.
Thanks Dimitris, yes there are lots of variables that is for sure, I really do hope the R7 matches our expectations. Cheers, Duade
Great comparison. Me too waiting for the r7 to compliment my r6. It will be on my EF600mm II version and my r6 will be on my 100-400mm II zoom lens. Can you make a video comparison between canon RF adapter vs Viltrox adapter?
G'day Peter, sounds like the perfect combo, U can't wait. Cheers, Duade 👍 oh I haven't tried the other adaptor.
Thanks Dimitris, I will be sure to do some comparisons once I get the R7, Cheers, Duade
As a happy R5+RF100-500 owner, I still lust for the EF600mm f4 II as I find myself wanting more bokeh and light - especially in the morning hours - but for now really can’t afford it.
Yes, the big primes are so expensive but do offer a different look that is for sure. Your combo is fantastic though, Cheers, Duade
favorite shot is bird on way back to truck. Already own the 100-500, can't wait for the R7! Excellent photos (really well done post processing)
Thanks Brent, yes the R7 looks very interesting, Cheers, Duade
If there is 90D sensor, you must remember that R7 have IBIS unlike 90D. You can then use lower shutter speed and because of that lower ISO.
Thanks and good point, I can't wait to try it, Cheers, Duade
I liked your habitat shot towards the end. Actually, I would have been pleased had I taken all of the images you showed. Obviously the bokeh created by a prime helps make even an "ordinary" bird photo look special but I prefer the flexibility of a zoom. With all the specialty digital "filters" built into superzoom cameras I wonder how hard it would be for software engineers to create a "prime bokeh" digital filter for crop sensor cameras?
Thanks Bruce, yes, that last shot was great, the more I use a zoom the more I enjoy that flexibility. Cheers, Duade
The Cisticola in the grass is a lovely natural picture and the light is gorgeous.
Thanks Michael, it was a real bonus at the end of the session, Cheers, Duade
Agreed, it's a lovely shot. Of the others I prefer the prime shots.
@@_benjimouse_ Thanks Alistair, Cheers, Duade
Very jealous of your wildlife, down under, you’ve got some great captures there Duade, interesting video thank you 🙏
Thanks Roger, we sure do, Cheers, Duade
Love the video. watched while having breakfast and felt like I was on a little trip What camouflage is on your 100-500 lens?
Thanks Dman, the wrap is found here www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html it is from China so the post is very slow and it is like a jigsaw puzzle putting it together. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade. Mark smith, another UA-camr and bird photographer, indicated that the r5 struggles with autofocus when dealing with birds near the water. He tries to capture the birds as it just hits the water trying to catch a fish so it might not be the same as your images from a very low angle. However have you noticed this or heard of this? Thank you.
Yes, at times it can grab the water but overall, it is very good. Cheers, Duade
good day, your videos are very nice to follow and i want to start again myself. i used to have a canon 7d, now i'm looking at a canon 7dii.
Who cares about the lenses, look at that photographic prowess, I'm just mind blown by your skills!
Thanks, you are too kind, Cheers, Duade
Tnx very nice. Do you see a difference in post-processing the cropped R5 raw files compared to its uncropped raws? E.g. in terms of dynamic range, noise?
Yeah you cannot continue to crop the cropped R5 image if you know what I mean. But no difference in dynamic range etc. I dont usually use crop mode, I would rather crop in post. Cheers, Duade
I have no idea how did you manage with two cameras plus the cameras that you use for capturing yourself. Thank you so much for great comparison demonstration.
Thanks Mustafa, yes a challenge but very enjoyable. Cheers, Duade
Lovely video! It's nice to see photos of habitat as well, especially for person not from Australia :). What kind of cover you have on zoom lens? :) Keep up the great work!

Thanks, totally agree, the zooms allow you to take different types of shots, Cheers, Duade
What en incredible experince!! Do you remember what the location was called? 😊😊😊😊

You're so awesome. You're not afraid of diving into that mud to get the shot! haha... I don't think I could get up after that one. haha ;)
I must admit it gets harder the older I get :-) Cheers, Duade
The way you move from video to finished photo to RAW file is so unique and so informative. It's a more effective approach for me in some psychological way. I don't think I can explain really what I mean but I will just say that flowing from the finished photo into the RAW, as opposed to the other way around, seems much better as a teaching aid, to me at least. I have never seen another photographer present things like that. I really connect with the way you explain things.
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback, I am glad it helps. Cheers, Duade
Is it the same to crop into the Photo or switchint to 1,6 crop Mode, by using the R5. I can´t test it, because my daughter ownes the R5
What wrap do you have on the 100-500? Are they easy to remove with out damage or leaving a bunch of gunk?
G'day Jon, it is a 3M skin that you can get online, it is a real puzzle to put on and took hours but should prevent scratches etc. Got mine from China here, takes a while via slow post but quality is fine. bit.ly/3szEINM Cheers, Duade
Absolutely amazing video my friend. Great shots. Best regards, Guy.
Thanks Guy, I appreciate it, Cheers, Duade
Great shots. The R7 is an interesting proposition. Do you plan on selling one of the full-frame bodies if you get the R7, or getting it as a supplement?
I will see how I go with it first, I use the R6 as my video camera these days so it may go on the shelf. Cheers, Duade
I like both..the big heavy prime for the times when your not moving around much and the zoom for the times when you need the flexibility of hand held and portability…. Madly saving for the 100-500RF which will be much lighter than the Sigma 150-600 sport.
Thanks Gary, yes, it is a great lens that is for sure, just wish it wasn't so expensive. Cheers, Duade
Saving also. I’ve got the sigma contemporary but want the rf. 😀
@@Duade That’s why I can’t let go of my EF100-400mm II because the RF 100-500 is way too much for me.

Thanks Lau, I agree, thanks for the pickup, unfortunately I am unable to edit once uploaded, Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade, i really like your videos and your photos. While looking this last video i was wondering if you have ever made a video on your photo editing. I like your colors compared to original RAW and wonder if you have any favorite LR presets or other standard practices. Any thoughts on this?
@@Duade Thanks Duade, nothing there for any of my Nikon Lenses. . .
G'day Kim, I will be testing the R10 and RF100-400 which would be a great kit for wildlife. Cheers, Duade
It is my pleasure Daniel, have fun with your R5, our days are getting warmer down here but we have had a lot of rain that is for sure. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Sweden is a beautiful country for wildlife... I need to take more time to follow my passion and progress. Cheers.
Top drawer as always ,,,,,,
Prime is for fixed stationary targets Where'as the Zoom is for moving targets because you can move the lense to compensate the Target you are capturing .. it's how i view the difference between such lenses . Mind you I wish i could afford an expensive lense
Question for all ...
@@Duade Likewise prices are increasing here but the wages aren't ...
What kind of cover is in the RF100-500?
Is there any reason to an R7 if you already have crop mode ?
Where did you get the RF 100-500 lens wrap? I really like the style color you picked?
Johnathan, I got it from here www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002941757172.html It is from China so takes a while via post. Quality is very good being 3M but be warned it takes a number of hours to put on as its like a jigsaw puzzle. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade your commitment is nothing less than legendary.
Thanks Brendan, yes, I was happy with how that one turned out, Cheers, Duade
BR
@@marekp2845 I hope to get hold of a M4/3rds system at some point. Cheers, Duade
Loved this video! What a variety at one watering hole. I really liked the habitat shot at the end. I'm thinking a zoom might be the best for me for a bit more versatility.
Thanks May, yes, the zoom is much more versatile, Cheers, Duade
Excellent review. I have a two 300MM & 500MM but like using a 100/400MM as I so much more flexible.

Thanks!
Thanks Gary, yes, there is no one perfect solution, I think the R7 RF100-500 will make for a wonderful combo. Cheers, Duade
Congrats, your vlog is always amazing, Duade. I prefer both prime and zoom, depends what I want to shoot.

Thanks Duade I could watch these videos all day. It’s either or for me I liked photos from both the prime and the zoom they are both winners.

@@davet3530 Thanks Dave I have the adapter as I was using my old 100 to 400 while waiting for the 100 to 500 so makes a lot of sense.
Dan, I suspect the R7 and 500 f4II will offer you a very nice package for small birds, shorebirds etc. The R5 100-500 for walking around, landscapes, butterflies etc. Kind of two kits for two different uses. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade I just got fair deal on a mint 5OO MKII .. Thanks for the input.!!
@@DanBetty Well done Dan, it is a wonderful lens. I forgot to mention it but the IS works a little harder on the 500 when paired with a mirrorless. PS I’ll stick to zoom, thanks

Wayne, if you have the 100-400 and a 1.4 they work very well on Mirrorless and would be great on the upcoming R7. The RF100-500 is better then the 100-400 but it is very expensive and probably not necessary if you enjoy your 100-400. Cheers, Duade
