Room Design returns! GEM LOCK!

- Room design is back with a zigzagging vengeance. Give your players a circuitous good time with this 2D/3D mini puzzle and combat setup. If it worked in Zelda, it works in D&D.

An orphanage for dwarves is called a dwarfanage.
+JustOneAsbesto It's also called A MINE
9:46 DRUNKENS & DRAGONS GUY'S TIP: "Always have people solve puzzles while they're fighting...Otherwise, it's like, time passes as you ponder the puzzle. Not fun."
Pffft. Stella is delicious. You keep your banana beer I'll be over here drinkin' my skunk water in peace.
Pyment is fermented honey and grape juice (the precursors of mead and wine, respectively). It's super good. Just thought I'd mention it's not the same as Stella with some table wine (which I'm totally going to try.)
If you like mixing beer, you might like:
Hangman's Blood: Porter with brandy, gin, and rum
Snakebite: 1:1 Lager and Cider (dry lager with dryer cider, or a twist... IPA with a sweeter cider)
Illidan Stormrage: 3:2 Brooklyn Double Chocolate Stout and Troeg's Mad Elf
Let me know if you try that last one; I invented it at my last bar tending job.
This great 2D system is very very storyboarding. Makes a ton of sense.
I just used this in the campaign my friends have been playing off and on for the last ten years. I swapped out the lizard theme for oozes, they loved it!
This is a perfect room for my caveman sci-fi campaign
Listening again years later
You forgot MEAD! It doesn't get more medieval than that! Okay maybe it can get more medieval than that, but I don't know what it is. Keep up the badassery!
Awesome room design as always Hankerin! I think this design is totally scalable, up to a quest-level or down to a single room. I think to ensure that you keep to the "solve-the-puzzle-while-in-combat" motif, a key is that you don't want the key hanging around the monsters neck requiring you to kill it first... and it's probably more fun if it's something very difficult to kill... if it's not heavy, or difficult to move, then maybe a difficult terrain to slow players down... i like it. very good sir!
+Roger Farley However, hanging a key around an _unkillable_ monster's neck requires the players to come up with a creative solution to getting the key.
+Jared Hayter An unkillable monster yes, anything else no... hack it until you kill it... but hanging it around the neck of a Tarrasque might invoke some creativity... or a whole lotta "did we leave the coffee maker on?" type of bravery... lol
The beginnings of ICRPG. It all began here in this video.
People who don't want to draw the cards or feel they can not draw to a level they want could always grab images from the web.
+theDMsCraft Great suggestion DM Scotty!!
thanks =)
+theDMsCraft +drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass
yeah you just whip out a book case like this. Holy **** I'd be on hours trying to draw like that.
But Great suggestion Scotty my Tip on this Magic Set Editor. You can create Magic Cards with it very easy and you can import the images from the web, That's how I create my NPCs
Great ideas here. Might I amend the "always solve puzzles while fighting" comment. I wholeheartedly agree with this and would add that this works with other types of dramatic moments as well, less brevity but a useful device for GMS. I.e. have the wizard tearing through the tombs of the secret library with some deep roleplay (wis and int checks) while the bard is stalling the librarian via some charisma checks and the barbarian holding upon the heavy door or something. I think it even works with a split party if you are fast enough..
Whatever you do, do not try Black Velvet (sparkling wine with guiness). Oh man the hangover..
Ok, love the "gem lock." Going to use it in the near future.
Also going to mix some flavourless beer and red wine in the near future too!
Epic slo-mo hollerin' always gives me a chuckle.
Not only DnD but how to make cool drinks too ...
This is the first video I've seen from you sir. I think it's one of my favorite videos I've ever seen. 'Always solve problems during combat' that blew my mind. Like.. i'm trying to think how to not just kill my players but challenge them and my brain is melting.
This is awesome.
Keep up the good work!
What state are you located out of friend?
washingtone!
do you also get your mead from the Aesir on Colby in Everett?
Awesome ideas. I will be using the gem lock soon! Also, reminds me of the boxed set of 2e cards for random dungeons. I'll have to dig it out and see if I can hack that too.
Love the flexibility of the 2d format!
Gettin' medieval!
Finally, a new Room Design episode!
how would I get my group to focus on a combat puzzle? Make the monster strong/resilient enough to make them look for another way out?
That needs a t-shirt:
"Drink, so damn good, it makes you wanna joust!"
Zelda is prolly the bigges source of inspiration for me when creating adventures.
I miss playing Zelda and being entertained by it for weeks on end. Never managed to beat the second much harder playthru. / Frangelico. Especially if you play a cleric. Those Tuscan monks know how to make liqueur or liquor, not sure of the difference. But you have to be careful buying it and other fine inebriative liquids, as the local drink supplier's likely fell off a truck. I bought some at a Denver ABC store, awful! Even my drunk gf at the time said so, and she could drink anything. But order the stuff at a bar and pay too much for it: delicious. Witchcraft! I really like your sketches.
Cool!
that moment when you reailze hank is from the alliance... n
hankren I noticed that u didn't start off crafting sci Fi, I guess we all have to pop the cherry. gg hankren. lol
You realize you should write a RPG meta-rule book, of guiding principles (the three-T's, puzzles in combat, etc etc). (Kind of like Never Unprepared?) Folks would lap that guidance up; further cashing in on your diligence and breadth of research and deep thinking. :)
+Keith Pitts I have a project i keep revamping called the rpg hacker's handbook. Your concept is simpler...I need to look up Never Unprepared.... thanks for the idea though. A book would make a nice, simple KS people could jump right into....
Oh totally. And the "rewards" stack would be easy too, ebook, paperback, hardback, bonkers embossed leather. :)
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass i'd buy that book
That's an excellent trick. I'll have to incorporate that into my five room dungeon where every room is a five room dungeon. Also, completely unrelated question, what ever became of the adventure overview party tracking foam map?
+Stratplayer05 it died...just not enough overland play in this group to need it
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass That's a shame, but I know the feeling. Rare are the games where geographical position is worth tracking in that much detail. Now if only I can figure out how to apply the zigzag trick to my rogue wizard's lair where the rooms change what order they're in.
Inspirational! I always thought Stella was kinda week too.
The room design is inspirational also!
Do you really think we can all draw like that?
I don't know what logo that is on your hat, but it reminds me of an old filling station (convenience store) called Coastal Mart. It (the logo) had a big red C with a grey gridded globe in the center.
The close up was kinda fuzzy, and I am certain it's not my Dos Equis that made it so. But in a few more hours, that argument may be invalid.
+Christian Oliver Colorado flag!
on the hat... love it.
Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass you live in Colorado?
Beer....and red wine?
The monster pawns go well with the cards... who would have thought? Especially with the 3D terrain RIGHT there for comparison... I thought this channel was how to play mo badder? You are very entertaining and creative but even you can't make 2d "bad" as it were... I mean Your 3D stuff rocks!
+Kevin Watts all dimensions contain promise, as long as promise be brought.
Blood Wine?
I like this card-based 2D dungeon design. It reminds me very much of a graphical version of the way people play Fate with lots of index cards. Do you have more videos on this method?
+Jared Hayter Nope, it's just a new method I've been using for my 2nd group...started as a way to avoi 3d terrain for 2 groups..but kinda took a life of its own...
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass I would love to see you develop this further. The cards themselves remind me of the illustration pages at the center of some early modules like Barrier Peaks. The implementation reminds me of what I've read about FFG's Warhammer RPG. The idea lends itself to repurposing Magic: the Gathering or similar cards or, as Scotty suggests, online art. I particularly like how the cards you made are open to interpretation and reuse.
will do!!
2d for one group, 2.6 for the other...vids coming!
How do the players know which door leads to the rest of the dungeon (ie the way they want to go). From what I see, its just a 50/50 guess that they drag it to the wrong door.
Edit: nevermind, you mentioned it later in the video. I knew of ways to that, I just didn't see it in your example at first.
Hank, is there anywhere I can purchase a pdf of your illustrated note cards?
coming soon!
coming soon to drive thru rpg!
please do an art video lesson or something! :) also, where did u get that blue book from????
+The Aussie GM ah yes the stormwind journal..a rare prize from an insider friend at blizzard. art lesson? on inking?
well, i shall keep an eye out for one like it! and i cant say i know what the difference is, but the things you draw are awesome and i'd love to know how you draw it because i'm very much limited to glorified stick figures ahaha so, art lesson? how to draw ____?
thanks for responding
on it!
I see what you did at 13:47... was there ever an official adventure for that PHB 1e cover art?
not yet
i just sub'd based solely on the fact that i have the same mjolnir bottle opener. though i do seem to like the actual content of the videos so far. :v
Sorry if this has already been asked before: what style of drawing is it that you're using? Looks very Mignola-esque or in the style of Darkest Dungeon imo. Looks great!
just my silly style!
Great vid. What kind of pen did you use for the drawings?
+Jasmyn Bianca ye olde sharpie!
Why not put a vampiric chamber where you roll 1d4 for bats to attack a random player. And the vampire screams every 3 turns and they have to make a charisma saving throw if the fail 5 times they go insane and the DM has to take over and harm their friends while there is another vampire that can only charm the people that are sane.
But the charm is level 1 spell
And before you put them in that 'chamber' I would give them any poison resistance armoire because the charming vampire can still make poisonous bites and attacks. I would also suggest that there are so many bats you could possibly get lifted up at least 15 feet in the air. Just a suggestion though.
I hate that I can't use that. My players would literally just go all-in on the fight and get mad tunnel vision.
very common problem
TyrantGea let them do it once and fail, they will learn from the mistake
My players would die against the Hydra and Giant Snake.
do you by any chance have your cards (that you showed at the end) available to view anywhere? Or a list of ones you'd recommend making as a base set? Thanks
a full pdf set will be on drive thru rpg soon!
Awesome, thanks for taking the time to put them together : D
coming soon to drive thru rpg
Great ideas!
What pen did you use to draw these cards? I'm using uniball air but the ink smears too easily when drawing.
+Kastenbrot you must master the floating hand! I use a sharpie and a uniball gel
Alright, will do!
here's a crazy: ink doesnt smear, PAPER does! all ink will smear on the wrong paper..more matte papers can help. BUT all ink smears... this may seem brutal but you must learn to float you hand and brace it with a pinky or knuckle. Touch ye not thine fresh ink! I use uniball gel elite
Interesting thought. Thanks for coming back to this old comment!
What set are you using to demonstrate this? (The one on the table)
+Revo tor set? that's just my goofy styro terrain
Be kind to your liver
Nice mechanic !
which dice do you use ?
+Arxpell which dice?
+Drunkens & Dragons: Play D&D Like a Badass It seems that you are not using classical dice in your video ?
yeh I do...just all kinds of odd ones...magnesium, giant, etc lol all hail the mighty d4!
Hank, you need to create newer shorter videos and reference these older videos with a link. There is great content here that doesn't have enough views!!
like for the spanish wine
rolling rock is boring... Don't let avgn hear you say that
