My husband is brutal on socks at the heels and toes. I don't recall where I learned this tip of using wooly nylon thread as reinforcement in heels and toes but it really works. The thread is used in surging machines and is very strong yet small enough you don't notice much of a difference at all. Not to mention there are lots of colors and one spool will make so many socks. I have barely made a dent in my spools so maybe pick a neutral color if you don't want to have extra spools.
Where do you get this reinforcing thread?
@@janwalker7620 You Can Use Any Spool Of Sewing Thread, And Just Carry It Along With Your Sock Thread. You Can Knit The Whole Sock Like That, Or Just Problem Areas. I Find That Joann Fabrics Has Very Strong Coats & Clark's Sewing Thread That's Very Fine Guage Thread But Nearly Indestructible.
Cool idea! Thanks for sharing!
Finally, knitting socks makes sense to me! I’ve made a couple of pairs by strictly following the pattern, but not quite realizing WHY I’m doing what I’m doing. This series is wonderful! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I Started Out Knitting Like That, Now Several Years Later I Understand Each Part & How To Customize Each Piece For A Desired Look Or Function. Jana Is An Excellent Teacher, No Doubt.
I'm knitting my first sock, cuff down this time, I'll try toe up next. But I just wanted to say that as a visual learner, your are one of the few people that I watched and re-watched until I felt confidant enough to try. So, Thank You!!
This is the exact video I am looking for to knit customized heels and gussets. I’ve knitted many socks but all followed a pattern book with the same number of stitches (60), same sizes of needles (0) and yarns (1). When I changed the sizes to thicker needles and yarns, I didn’t know how although I knew all the techniques. So thank you very much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for demonstrating on your daughter’s foot exactly where to begin the heel flap and get the measurement for the heel, pad. I have been searching for that exact information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for trying on the sock as you knit. It really helped me understand when and why to shape the heel.
It NEVER occured to me that the reinforcement could be on the heel flap and not just the back. It's so simple but this has opened my eyes to a new world. My partner blows the heels out of his socks first, so I've been looking for the best ways to make him a pair of socks that will last! Thank you. Your explanations are perfect and so easy to understand!
Hopefully his socks will last longer now! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
I just found your channel, and I am already excited about knitting my first pair of socks. I love how you are explaining what you’re doing and why! And you’re going slow enough that I can follow along! I have a long arch and short toes so I knew that toe up would be the best method for me to use. Your tutorial makes it seem so easy. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
An absolutely excellent tutorial. Thank you very much. I haven't started my first pair yet, but will when I have recovered from my hand surgery. :)
So incredibly happy to have found this series! I've knit many socks cuff-down or toe-up but never could get the hang of toe-up heel flaps like this till watching these videos. Your explanations are really helpful, and I love that the pattern is not based on a fixed stitch count but instead based on gauge and measurements! Thank you for making these wonderfully helpful videos
i havent knitted for a while i truly need help with socks. i find this group very helpful , and i need help. thank you so much.
Thanks Cindy Yeager for the reinforcement idea. I wear socks right above the heel for some reason. I tried the sweet tomato heel on my socks over half the stitches and four wedges, I love it. I will try to reinforce my wear area even though my yarn has nylon in it already. Thanks for the great videos on sock knitting. You have helped me get over my fears of knitting socks. I just saw you did a shadow wrap heel and I will definitely be trying that on striped socks with contrast heels and toes.
Thank you for the tip to knit the last stitch through the back. I haven’t heard that before and can tell it is going to make picking up stitches SO much easier!
Glad it was helpful!
As always a very clear explanation of the heel flap and turn. Your details about measurements help me to understand what I am doing and why. Your attention to sizing to fit, is so helpful in knitting garments and socks that fit my body! Thanks Jana ❤️
Great to hear!
I’ve been using this series for almost a year now. I’m wearing my beautiful luxurious alpaca socks now and working on another pair of alpaca socks!
Well, I just finished my first sock, now to make the other one. 🙂It took me four tries. I became very proficient at using the magic circle and doing the Turkish cast on. I really appreciate your instructions and videos.
Ive done a few practice runs of this heel to this point with scrap yarn and I’m almost feeling brave enough to start my alpaca socks for myself! I only need to master the next part and I’ll be ready!!!
This is the best toe up gusset heel I have ever seen....thank you so much!
I'm moving on to the next video tomorrow since I decided to use dark charcoal yarn, and I don't have the eyesight I used to working at night .... but boy, I'm on this tomorrow. THANK YOU AGAIN!!
Wonderful!
Thank u for this! The algorithm sent me here and this is a fantastic tutorial.
I appreciate how well you explain and show how to knit socks. Thank you ! Socks are one of my goals.
You can do it!
Thank you so much for these tutorials. I've only made top down socks previously, but my husband has big feet and so I'm always playing yarn chicken wondering if the second sock will get finished or I'll need more yarn! So I've been looking at different toe up patterns and video tutorials and decided on this one because you've made it so clear and easy to follow. My first toe up sock is going beautifully, thank you so much for your help 🧦😊
Very interesting technique! I really like the slip 1, knit 1 to reinforce the heal. Really nice! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
🤗
never knitted a sock i am olny 13 years old this is my first sock
I’m about to try my first heel flap heel. Your videos are perfect! Can’t wait!
Love your work - can't knit socks without you❤
OMG thank you for video…….finally someone who show you visually without all the math calculations….I’m a visual learner and math is not my friend lol
Thank you so much for this! Your sock videos are the best!❤
Alright, i am done, and I love my « awesome » work!! Love love love your video!! On to next video whohoo!! Have a good weekend!
thank you so much for this tutorial! 😊
I'm so excited to try your method for the heel reinforcement on the sole. Normally the reinforcement is at the back of the heel where I don't need it (I wear Birkenstocks). I'm wondering if you ever add reinforcement at the ball of the foot (where I tend to need to mend thin spots)? You are very thorough explaining the technique that's used and I so appreciate that. Thank you for adding new excitement to my sock knitting. (I've been knitting socks for over 40 years.) ~Marilyn
I was doing great until after I picked up the stitches on the first side. Then it was time to adjust the magic circle, but I wasn’t sure how to do that and ended up with a confusing mess. I switched everything to DPN and am finishing up on those. I will try again on the second sock. Otherwise, the videos are very clear and helpful.
This is so good, thank you
Thank you for this series!
Glad you like them!
Great video as always. I’m never sure when I’m supposed to slip stitches purl wise vs knit wise. But will try to remember to do so at least for this application.
Always slip purlwise unless the pattern or technique specifically says knit wise, such as a SSK decrease. The reason is because when you slip knitwise you are twisting the stitch.
Makes sense to put the heel flap on the bottom!
You are Amazing. Thanks again! 😊
Yahoo I made a fake sock tube with acrylic yarn bcs I’m afraid to do this on the wool toe-up sock I started. After I master this I will do it on my Icelandic wool.
I love this tutorial! You make it so easy to follow along ☺️
When does the next video get uploaded? I am so exited to continue 👏🏼
I can't recall if I did, or not. You certainly could and it wouldn't hurt a thing.
Thank you. Very well explained!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you thank you ...looking forward to next week .. then I will be starting at the beginning again and actually follow along with my knitting.. I must say a little worried about picking up stitches. I have only ever done the fleegle heel ..
It's not as hard as you think!
Am up to the heel start and I’ve got a sock emerging. Thank you for your careful instructions. This is fun and amazing.
Wonderful!
I was so tense my stitches were too tight to slip slip ktog so I pulled out most of my heel, relaxed loosening up and am back to the heel turn part. I also changed my under over purl to match yours, and that helped as well.
I've never seen a toe-up witht the gusset AFTER the feel :O This almost broke my brain hahah but it's very clever!
Weird question, but do you have a video (or a document) which tells me how to take this series and do it for ANY size foot ... even a baby bootie? Like, measuring, dividing the stitches to know how to do the heel flap for the baby bootie, etc. AND for the weight of yarn ... so if I want to do a bootie in sock yarn for a new-born, but then I want to do a bootie in worsted, to go over the sock-weight, for winter use. Yeah, I hope that made sense.
Thanks for the information for high instep. My sons and grandsons have flat feet so instep are higher. I am going to need to redo the heels 😢on three socks 🧦.
You are so welcome!
I looked at a lot of videos, websites and patterns and your video was the only one that made sense to me. I made a pair of socks 10 years ago and forgot how I did it....this video reminded me of the proceedure. However, I am trying to figure out how many stitches you should have on your needle after you finish the turn (cup)? I started out with 24 and ended up with 15, which made no sense. I really want to finish these socks.
You only had 24 stitches for the heel flap? So only 48 total sts?
Yes. I took a few notes with the last pair I made and that's what worked for me. I tried it on and it fits good.
I'm still kind of new to knitting. This video is so helpful as I try to learn how to make socks.
I kept getting lost/mixed up with my cuff down attempt. I like this toe-up method better.
Even though I thought I measured correctly, I made the sock too wide, but with some interspersed k2tog, I was able to taper it down.
My one question: how do I change yarn when I start the heel flap? (I want to make the heel a different colour than the body)
Thanks for any help.
I usually cut the main color yarn, leaving a good 4-5" tail to weave in later, then just tie on the contrasting heel color right when I begin the heel flap.
I turn the heel also, with the contrasting color, and switch back to the main color when I pick up for the gusset sts and resume knitting in the round.
After reading all the comments I have to say I agree your caliber of teaching is great! I do have a question about the heel turn. You say to slip the first stitch purl wise, then knit halfway across, then knit 2 more stitches, then SSK, K1 and then turn your work. After turning your work you say to slip 1, Purl 5, P2 together, P1 and turn. My question is twofold. Do we count the first slipped stitch as part of the total numbers to knit and purl? Also, on the purl round do we always just purl the 5 stitches, etc.. for the first row or is there a formula to figure out how many for that first purl row? Again, I am an avid fan and so glad I found your channel!
Yes, count the slipped stitch as part of the total.
On the purl side, you purl 5 just the first time, then on subsequent rows, you'll want to purl until you get to 1 st before the "gap" then purl 2 together, to close the gap. Thanks watching!
I've been searching your videos for toe up socks, but where it looks like a regular gusset from top down. I can't seem to find in your videos. I enjoy how you explain and alter patterns for ease. Would you consider doing a video in the future with this style of heel?
I'll add it to my suggestion list!
I did the tie up socks TAAT but the reverse heel flap on the foot caused my sock to be lower in the back cuff. Can I knit the back of the cuff for several rows to get it level with the front of the leg? I think I prefer top down socks or a different heel. Love your videos.
Try it! Let me know how it goes...
Merci
This is a finish it February knit. Started when you first did video. On the reinforced heal do you knit into the back on the last stitch on knit row every time or just the once
You knit through the back loop on each knit row (not the purl rows)
Thank you!! I’ve only used the fleegle heel so this is new to me. Wrap and turn and German short rows are so confusing. This is so much easier. Would this be called just regular short rows? Is it German when you pull the working yarn up and over to make the double twin stitch?
Yes, that's the German short row. This is a basic method.
great turorial. very clear.
question does count on heel flap stitches always gave to be even.
i have snnodd number
I've always knitted with an even number, but I suppose you could use an odd number.
I also have a narrow heel and am considering putting the flap with slipped stitches for reinforcement under my heel rather than behind it. Can you feel the difference in texture when you take a step? Thanks!
It feels more cushy on my heel, definitely!
When you knit one sock at a time, do you make the second sock exactly the same by counting rounds till you get to where the heel would start? Or do you just measure and not worry if it is exactly the same amount of rows as the first one?
The reason I like to count rows is because if I've tried on the first sock, then I've stretched it a bit and that can throw off my measurement.
Hi Jana! Love your videos! I have a question re the patreon memberships. If I join at one level, can I increase my membership amount at a later date? Thanks!
Yes!
Excellent series! Now, is there a link somewhere to your Patreon account? I definitely want to acknowledge your super teaching but I’m not seeing here so I must be looking in the wrong place…hmmmmm
The link should be in the video description, but here it is as well. Thanks for being interest in becoming a patron!

I’m using a DK yarn and have fewer stitches than on your sock. Also half the number of stitches is an odd number. Could I slip two at the beginning or knit 2 at the end and still get a useful reinforced heel? I think it should work.
You could!
@@PurlTogether
Thanks for answering. I decided to do what I suggested in my question.
Almost done the heel. It looks fine! Turning of the heel next!
Is there a term for the type of knitting used for the turn? I know with German short rows, you have to pull the yarn around, but here you are k2tog/p2tog. Is this a different kind of short row?
I've never heard a specific term for this method.
Is it possible to do a German short row instead of a SSK or P2tog?? I’m still trying to understand the short row construction.
You can knit whatever heel you prefer, certainly, but then you'll be knitting an entirely different pattern that will fit differently as well.
hi i need some help , i am trying socks knitting on 2 circular. . after the end first row there is a big gap between the two rows. any advice. thank you Becky

My son always wears holes in his socks at the bottom sole at the bottom of his heel. Can I use the method of reinforcement through the heel turn?
Sure!
A friend started showing me how to make a toe up sock about 12 yrs ago and then we moved and I never made it to the heel and beyond. I finally decided yesterday that I was going to figure out how to finish it and this video is really helpful. I am almost done with the heel flap and was watching the part where you turn but the number of stitches on my needles is a total of 66 and the half I am making the heel with is 33... will that matter when I am making the turn since it's an odd number?
Well, if you want to do the slip stitch reinforcement, you'd want an even number for that. I would just slide one stitch over to include in the heel flap (34) and leave 32 for the top of the foot section.
@@PurlTogether Maybe I am doing it wrong, but it works with the 33. As I get to the end of the row, I end with a knit stitch and then knit in the back of the stitch as instructed and all the heel rows line up. After I purl across, I start again with a Slip, Knit.
I might go back and redo it anyway in case it gets weird when I turn and join back up with the top of the foot.
I've made socks for years now (top down) but with my son's size 13 W Hobbit feet, I decided to take the plunge and do toe-up socks rather than play yarn chicken (he doesn't mind shorter legs - but shorter feet won't fit him, right?). How would I do the heels in a contrasting colour using your techniques as I find your instructions much clearer than many others I've watched and read. I am about 1" from the gusset start if adding gusset first (where the foot joins the ankle area).
Join the contrasting yarn when you begin the heel flap. Then, I like to change back to the main color when I resume knitting in the round and start the gusset decreases. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching :)
I think i misunderstand but the sl 1 k1 part of sock comes before the gusset on a toe up sock? It doesn't look like a cuff down. Did i miss something?
You're not missing anything. I've flipped the heel so that the reinforcement is on the bottom. You do knit the heel flap first, then the gusset. Try it :)
@@PurlTogether lol! Thank you!! I frogged the sock but started over now understanding the whys and wherefors...very good instructions!
Owsm
Your videos are my "go to" for sock knitting. SERIOUSLY! I'm knitting along with this series but I'm confused. Cuff down socks usually have the heel flap then the heel turn. I've knitted through and up to half of the gusset stitches but, then it all seems odd to me with heel flap and turn in opposite direction than Cuff down socks. Does it matter?Help me understand, please.
Flipping the heel flap and gusset just puts the padding and reinforcement on the bottom of the heel, where you need it. The gusset functions the same way. Go with it, you'll see!
@@PurlTogether Thanks for responding. I'll just learn something new! You're a great teacher and I appreciate your tutorials 😊
For the heal flap, are the slip ones, slip one with yarn in back all through out? I only heard you mention it once. Just for clarity. Thank you
Yes, with the yarn in back, slip as if to purl
@@PurlTogether thank you so much! Almost finished my first sock!
What did I do wrong? I've co my sock sts, but when I go to knit, my yarn is on bottom needle. I'm knitting 2 at a time, circular needle
Your cast on row may have inadvertently become turned inside out. Just reorient, flipping the work through (insideout) if necessary to begin
@@PurlTogether Thank you it worked lol
Could i also just do 18 simple stockinette rows instead?
You could, your heel just wouldn't have the reinforcement.
aw jeez, what is the shawl behind you??

Thanks so much!
@@PurlTogether I really appreciate the slow careful explainations you offer. I'm working on my first toe up pair. I've ripped out my efforts 5 times now, but i think I'm finally getting some consistant results. The heel flap is EXACTLY like what I've been doing for the cuff down socks, what a relief to do it on the toe up's too. Thanks again and again!
You’re awesome and Your instructions are wonderful! My following them is not so great lol
On the heel flap I accidentally made the chain stitch on one side and the other side is smaller stitches not like the chain.
I might have had my working yarn in the wrong place when I was doing slip 1 purl the rest.
Do I need to take this all apart or is there a way to make this work with the side that does not have a chain stitch?
I’m a beginner with magic loop socks and have only ever done 2 other pairs with DPN over 10 years ago.
In theory, you could make it work without the chain stitch by picking up every other stitch, but honestly, I would reknit the heel flap so that you don't have gaps between the stitches that you pick up for the gusset.
See.... for all the people that say "BUT WHY DO WE HAVE TO STUDY GEOMETRY" ... THIS.. LOL (and building houses and stuff)
It’s not toe up!!
Have you watched the video and the entire series? This sock is most definitely knitted from the toe up.
