Steps to jack up you car include: Making sure that your jack is rated for a higher weight than what your car weighs, engage the parking brake, use actual wheel chocks (that piece of wood could possibly slide across the pavement), make sure the surface that your car is parked on is flat and a cement or concrete surface (do not try to jack up a vehicle sitting on the dirt!), and lastly know where the proper jack points are on your vehicle. And for God's sake do not have you vehicle running (really should not have to say that, but there is always that one person out there it seems). And do not attempt to get in the vehicle while it is sitting on a jack, or jack stands.
