Rules to live by for beta: -Condense your instruction down to 3 main points(give or take a bit). People can only remember around this much when concentrating on their paddling (i.e. go left, then go middle then back to left) -Focus on positive rather than negative(i.e. "go far right" rather than "avoid far left there's a huge stopper). If you tell someone not to go somewhere then they'll constantly be thinking about that part of the river and scared of it and eventually end up there. -Tell them of hazards only if they are significant enough that someone will have to consider running the rapid or not (i.e. Never leave out that there is a must make eddy before a portage. Or something like an undercut rock you could get pushed under if you just miss the line)
I think what would be great for us mere mortal kayakers and very interesting, is if you could give commentary on how you perceive and tackle the river as you go. "I'm gonna get the paddle left side, cause the wave is curing left," Seeing what's ahead and how to get ready for it. etc... stuff like that. Possible?
Great feedback thank you, I would be into this for sure but the hard part will be that when I am kayaking at my best I'm not really thinking... I think it could be a cool edit though!
If you could do a video like that, it would fantastic. I sometimes rewind your videos to see how you prep body and paddle position and edge changes on the boat as you go through various feature. It helps me to learn how to handle bigger features. Big means class IV for me. :-)
Scared? About that river? Nah. I'd be paralyzed with terror. I'd go full on zombie. Catatonic. I needed pointers just to survive watching it. Awesome run!
Some great advice of scare mongering. We have a lot of that here in Australia too, many guys are afraid to run certain rapids because so many people have built them up negatively. If you're going to give advice be positive about the run but also realistic about the dangers. Safe kayaking out there dudes!
Cool to watch Alec as you follow him. It's a good way to watch the great technique for running those rapids- different paddle strokes, set-ups, body position, etc. First person camera angles make it more difficult to see the technique that you're using to paddle that rowdy stuff. Good addition to the film!
I love the length of this one, and for the first time down you guys smashed it! Thanks to a good guide, but you made serious whitewater look almost easy. I watch your videos then start thinking "I can do that", then hit the river, and think "No you can't!!!" So far I've prayed my way through so good stuff thanks to your example!
Nearest I had paddled, with good continuous water was the Dart upper section in good and high water. Full on brain and ability work out for me. But a stroll for the locals.
Bren!!! first off great meeting you man, you guys are even cooler in person!!! I hate how much fear mongering there is in our sport whether kayaking or rafting there is much more fear sent into people than is ever necessary, i understand trying instill seriousness but it usually goes way too far
Totally agree with you with how you talk to people. I had done a first run on a local. ( Drop pool ) creek and had a guy walk me through each drop best day of my life what run and have run the same creek every time it rains 🛶
great video closest im getting to paddling i unloaded my van when getting back from a trip to the river dart and left dry suit hanging up in van woke up next morning to no van grrrrrr and not got cash to get new one just yet so your videos will get me through thanks lads keep them coming
Completely agree with the point about scaremongering! Seen it particularly with young keen paddlers being warned off pushing themselves a little harder by older paddlers because of something that happened many years ago, and normally sounds avoidable anyway
Great vid, but Bren you seriously got to change the camera bag, telly tubbies twinkly winky came to mind, thank God the palm atom dry suit isn't purple. 😁😋🤔
Beta is hard, I think it really depends on how well you know the person you are talking too, Say if you have never seen the person paddle and maybe you are unsure how they will get down the river, I'd tend to try and be a bit more vocal on the dangers. Not to a point of scaremongering, just there is the other side of the coin, when people just say "itl be sweet, follow me" forgetting not everyone might be as happy on that river as they are. It is true that people love to big up the scary stories though, just gotta make your own judgments and trust them, ay.
The Truss? Did he say the Truss? the Liz Truss? He's going to do Liz Truss? Sounds like that short ginger bloke is doing well for himself. Or... maybe it's the other way round. I mean he's so good looking. Could be a charitable thing for the new PM. Anyway, if that's the Truss, it's looking wet and ready. And an efficient German is getting some action too. Liz! You're right proper scandalous! Boris had nothing on you! Well... Maybe one thing. System entropy in the transportation unit! You can't be a kayaker and not have that happen. If you look inside a car with kayaks on top and it doesn't look similar to this, you know it's a faker.

@@Senders do a voice over on that audio track, talking about what you are concentrating on, thinking about, etc

Its nice to have a video with no music. I enjoy the sound and struggle a river can give.
