Growing Miltoniopsis in warm climates - Culture and care tips

- Today we take a closer look at Miltoniopsis Orchids and figure out how to care for them in a warm climate!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
Miltoniopsis orchids are cool to intermediate growers, which don't tolerate heat and dryness very well. For this reason they don't make excellent houseplants, but there are some things which can help!
They love moisture and air at the same time, so choosing the medium for them can be tricky. Too dry, or prone to salt build up media are not going to be easy to work with.
Sphagnum moss is typically a great medium in warm climates, learn how to use it here • How to use sphagnum mo...
Repotting a Miltoniopsis is a delicate process, check out how I do things here • Repotting a new Milton...
Humidifiers will help, also make sure that sun doesn't overheat the leaves and fertilize with half strength at first!

I live in south Louisiana where outside it is 98 degrees in the summer with humidity that runs about 89% or higher. I started growing these plants indoors about fifteen years ago. I never put them outside. I have about 12 plants and I never killed any. An expert orchid grower told me what to do to get these orchids to grow. I followed his advice and my plants are always in bloom producing spike after spike. First of all I grow them in a spare room that has a window that gets early morning sun. In the summer and winter my central air and heat is set at 74 degrees. I have the plants close to the window, I went to WalMart and bought a small table fan that is pointed on the plants but it moves left to right while it is on. I also have a small humidifier that I got from ebay for ten bucks. The humidifier looks like a stick and I put it in a empty plastic jug that is filled with water. You can see the stick put out a cool mist. I found that the most important thing to have while growing these plants is water quality. I tried a few of these plants about thirty years ago and I killed all four of the plants that I purchased at an orchid show. My expert friend told me to buy distilled water and give them another try. I took his advice and the few plants that I bought started growing. Hauling jugs of distilled water home every two days became tiresome. I searched the internet and found a water distiller for 75 dollars. The name of the brand for the distiller is Vevor. I only use organic fertilizer on them. The brand I use is doctor earth. Since it's organic I don't have to worry about salt build up since it doesn't contain any. I hope that this helps some of you.
Great info - thanks!
How you rebloomed it? What temperature during winter?
I just bought one and i have never smelled anything so beautiful.
Mine is in NZ sphagnum, here in NY. She's in glass with a reservoir of lava rock at the bottom. I just make sure that moss stays happy around her. I always do a second drain after watering and she lives in the bathroom with a lot of humidity. I have 2 spikes getting ready to open soon! I can't wait!
I purchased one last winter was listed as miltonia 🙄. Thanks to you now I know it is a miltoniopsis. I hope it survives my hot climate and i Hope we don't get heat waves in Malta this summer.
The Miltoniopsis on the left looks very similar to the 'Red Chestnut' variety...beautiful!
I have been waiting for you to do this video! Well done on the rebloom!!! I LOVE miltoniopsis flowers and it's because of these fussy divas I got bit by the orchid bug and I live in Los Angeles where we get hot summers, through end of Autumn... so it's been a challenge to get mine to thrive. Thanks for the tips and lots of love to Milo.
One thing I just discovered. I removed the flowering Miltoniopsis from the pot it came in. Placed it in a new ventilated pot without changing the medium it came in and there was no bud loss. None!!! All the buds bloomed!!! I’ll wait to change the medium after the flowers have faded. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✨
Thank you so MUCH for doing this video. I love this type of orchid, but have resisted purchasing because I can't seem to keep them alive. I have just one left that I have been nursing along. It has no roots and is indoors. I am going to try and grow it in a clear, ventilated, pot with sphagnum to see if it will grow roots. I've learned a great deal from your information. Can you do a video on Iwanagara? They're the other type of orchid that gives me challenges.
I’m trying my second beautiful miltoniopsis. This is so helpful!!
Thank you for sharing I just found one in Miami but I did not purchase because I know they are cool growers but now I want to buy it and give it a chance....they are beautiful 😀
I just bought one and I'm like 30 mins from you! Lol we can help eachother 😂😁 I'm nervous about mine for sure! It has 4 spikes and its white dark pink middle with yellow in center!
Should have seen this video a couple of months ago! Threw one in the bin a couple of days ago, but I still have one left so I will follow your advice. I live in a cold climate, Sweden, but we have a warm and dry indoors climate where they have to spend most of there time a
Recently they are available in India through Online sellers and community growers. I love them. And i really want to have the biggest collection i could dream of.
I was struggling with the fertilizer routine and temperature preferences although i kept mine in AC and Humidifier. I was giving 1/4 of fertilizer strenght but they are not looing their best. Now i know what i was missing.
Thank you so much
😍😍😍
Iam in india and I purchased a miltoniopsis today through online seller. I hope this will bloom.
I been waiting for this video since you posted the picture.
I bought one yesterday from our local grocery store. I hope it will survive
Yay... thank you Danny. 😘😘😘
Beautiful orchids 😍😍👍
Hi Danny, are you able to identify the miltoniopsis showed in 2:04? I'm pretty sure I have the same plant, no idea what's her name. Managed to rebloom it, but I have moderate climate, so congrats for you 😉
I just got one for Mother’s Day! I’m in love with it. I need to get me some moss.
Since these are plants that flourish under cooler, wet conditions can watering be done by using ice water? What about misting? Do you think this would be a good idea for a fairly warm Southern California?
Thanks for your great insights
Do i need to spray water on the leaves? It is my first one and i think my room is quite dry.
Thanks a lot for all your tutorials!
Thank you ! Love your video ☺😅☺😊
My miltoniopsis red tide has been growing in my hot glasshouse here in England and it’s spiking again
Ben Fernandez please share what you consider a “hot” greenhouse. That is my greatest concern more than watering or humidity. Thanks
Gorgeous! Danny will a bloom spike on the spike that had a bloom burst the spike appears to be putting bloom s on the same spike maybe it’s wishful thinking 🤔 so has that ever happened to you or anyone else I’m so exited I really hope it is would you know? Thank you Olivia
I just bought 2 Miltoniopsis a week ago, they are so beautiful and one smell so good. The yellow one smells but not that strong like the other one. My problem is that the yellow one has buds and are getting yellow/brown... don't know why?
Ah...bud blast what a shame might be because of the reason of changing climates or other reasons...
@@fil1220 I read up on bud blast when the buds on my sweet little "Darling" phalaenopsis started turning brown. Apparently it can be caused by: too much water, too little water. Too much nitrogen, too little nitrogen. Too much warmth, too much cold. In my case, I think it was from the big gas-burning wall heater in our dining room, but it could have been almost anything. When I finally repotted, the roots were in good shape (only snipped off four), so that wasn't it.
Very informative video. Why do you use bark on top of the sphagnum?
Think it is to stop algae from forming
