  • Solo Guitar and Voice Improv on My Old Song from Way Back When ( really, about 1966 )This painting is from a new point of view of a reflective , older man , remembering instead of the young man portrayed in the lyric during a life transition as it was originally meant to be. .." You pack your dreams and move away , decide to eat and live by day and leave the night..."
Advertising is truly annoying to me ,especially on my own material . As obscure as it is ,though written and performed by me ,this video has ads I never sanctioned and did not agree with . I do not ask for money from any of my videos .I took it off and made it private for a while but though there are leeches in the woodwork here , I want to share this with everyone who remembered this song . The responses on this and other links put up by people I don't even know have been very nice ,warm comments. I have not been successful communicating with the Google-UA-cam people . They are wrong to put ads on the back of this little camcorder video , on a song that is so obscure , and on me , a very obscure "Used to was" if I ever was . It's just shameful.

67 ,such a beautiful number ,etched in my memory as well. The summer of love had a ring to it , it is still ringing . There was a thing labeled free love . I can't be sure about how free everything was but the spirit lingers. if only we, then possibly, but is it spring again ,too busy doodlin' my pen, missing what may have never been , is it spring again..How can one miss what never was , it had to have been , and it still is ...1967.

It is so nice of you to say that ,Dave. This was one of the first tunes I recorded on the computer. I didn't practice or anything. i haven't sat around playing "Wind" and it very rarely ever came up in live situations. My hands were cold and weak but it fell into place ( almost ) , a memory in my hands and mind , the poetry still singing in my head from way back. I thought the entrance of the train was a strange chance but as if I had or could plan a thing like that , the tons of a train amplifying the second verse and chorus. I tell you that that train was kind of magical . Thanks again , Dave.

Bob I was a WNEW listener in the early mid 70s, in my teens at the time. Understand this is just one of the most special songs. There are big famous bands with huge hits etc. but this song is as special as any of those and better than most of them. It is really really good.

Thank you, Mike. WNEW played us every night but "Wind" was not logged at all in all the years all over the country, not once. I don't remember if Pete Fornatale was with WNEW . He played it a bit and we worked with him at shows a few times back then. His nephew , Mike Fornatale, is a prolific guitarist and singer right now in NYC. He also sang for "The Left Bank" who hit with it in 1966. The Nightbird caught me listening there all the time.

Bob Bruno, I want to thank you for writing this song, which is a classic. You're acoustic interpretation here is marvelous also. I love your jazz chords and improvisation. I also wanted to thank you for the songs Neverland/Neverland Revisited and Chess Game, which are also quite good. On the original Circus Maximus recording you play both piano and electric guitar and your solos are outstanding examples of jazz improv. I may upload the mono mix of Wind, because they really didn't know how to mix in stereo back then. You've still got it Bob.

OMG! One of my all-time favorite great songs! Yes, I did stay up at night, with my Emerson transistor radio, listening to Allison Steele on WNEW FM play this song. As much of a treat it was to find the original on You Tube, it was just as great to see you do it today, as a "slightly" older gentleman. Thank you so much for doing it on the guitar. I loved it. Just know... that song, along with your vocals, was a masterpiece that many consider timeless. Be well and thank you for something special.

Gee, thanks for the thought,Tom.Yesterday We lost one of our old pals from way back when. Jerry Jeff remained prolific up until October 23 ,2020 , when it all came to an end. Shortly after I finished "Wind" in 1966 , the four of us ,Jerry, Pete, ,Gary, and me went on a trip to Galveston Texas. I had been wrapped in the lyric of wind and on the Galveston Beach with the guys I ran about shouting "I am the wind" as the winds whipped my hair about and made me an abstract painting. I probably wouldn't have been emoting this sort of stuff if not for them. Jerry was a poet , a friend to the end . Not long ago I told him "You know, Jer, I was miserable even before I met you", and we laughed together as we had so many times over the years.

What memories this Ohio kid has of staying up way later than I should have on school nights in 1967-68 to tune in clear-channel WBZ-AM 1030 in Boston. Dick Summer played SO many great songs on his "Night Light" show (which was surely the first "underground" rock program to reach a multi-state audience).
But if I had to pick just one song to represent that incredible and life-altering time in my memory, it would be this one, which Dick played time and time again. Though it was hard to track down in my neck of the woods, I did finally find the first Circus Maximus LP, and ordered the second one through the Columbia Record Club. "The Wind" is, quite simply, sublime, as both a song and a performance. There is nothing else like it, and I have never ever failed to be thrilled by it whenever I've played it through the years.
Thank you, Bob, for creating an enduring masterpiece that will always be a part of me. I'm so glad to rediscover you again after all these years. This guitar version, with those inscrutable jazz chords, fills me with awe and wonder.

WBZ was nice to us . We did play in Boston at a place coincidentally called "Circus" something. We might have been there a week or so, I don't recall, but I remember our trip. On the route we played other places, had guitars stolen and actually returned for the first time in history.. haha. The scene was funny, we were asked to play a "Hully Gully" ( I think.. ). We had no idea what that was . Later I observed it was a line dance to "The Alley Cat " song. Anyway , as a group playing original music , that club wasn't where we should have been.. haha . We were fired the first night , returning to our motel rooms and finding Gary's (Gary White, bass with us, and writer of "Long,Long Time" , a #1 hit for Linda).. Gary's Martin guitar was stolen. That it was returned was unusual and I don't remember that story right now but we packed up and kept moving, on to Boston. Boston was nicer to us but uneventful and hearing that their WBZ played "Wind" really was a distant message to me. The "Wind" was one of our songs but the studio version with me playing the piano was atypical of our style as a group. I rarely played it in public after that era and the mood was too quiet to face live audiences . did carry a portable organ but , of course, the organ couldn't project the gentle touch of a piano. Live , I mostly played my Fender Stratocaster guitar. The Steinway in the Vanguard studio was inviting and the recording was an improvisation . I hadn't been practicing piano at the time and the beautiful piano feeling was luxurious to my ear so we went with it.
Thank you for your extensive comment , the most rewarding thing to blo from the wind , an obscure , low keyed , late night mood repeated all over the country . It was never logged in all the years and the eight minutes it took to listen. Maybe there were a few phrases that found a universal recognition in the dark of radios next to beds . The youtube recognition , the tune uploaded by complete strangers to me , and the positive commentary of this computer era are more than I ever realized back then.

When the wind blows me to a good place, it's all good. ;) Love is probably the most important thing in this world, because without it, what good is everything. But sometimes it is like the wind, blowing this way and that.
What do you think of this... "Those who are in love, never question the meaning of life". I hope you are at a good place and not questioning the meaning of life. ;) "The more you learn the less you know" about it anyway.
Your song moves me to far away places as I go nowhere. ;)

Really cool piece. I remember this tune when it came out in the late 1960s, and was a joy to hear it again from the original recording of Circus Maximus, and Bob's recent rendition. I recently did another tune that I created with my band (the Essentials) back in the 1990s called "Circus Maximus" that for some strange reason hooked up to my subconscious past, and when discovery Bob's piece "The Wind" again not too long ago, put it back into my consciousness again. Amazing, beautiful piece, "The Wind".

Hello, where did the time go, it is really an experience for us all as all the changes keep coming and going. "This too will pass" comes to mind , and too often these days. These are difficult times. Many people are facing so much that it boggles my mind . All around the world ,too. Looking out from my own isolation I am fortunate to be able to read you. My eyes are not very clear but I still have eyes . I wish I could help . Music , that is when I play , I forget about other things. This relief could be a blessing or a curse. The curse that was also visited upon Bach , an obsessive interest that took his mind off of the world. Listening also does this for me occasionally . I think getting away is good but then one has to get back, too. Help ! Stop the world I want to get back on.. haha . What the heck. Be happy if ,where ,and when you can.

I think it is also testimony to your originality, that all i needed to hear you sing, was the first line. After which, i had 2 thoughts. First, this IS, without any doubt, THE fine vocalist and guitarist, who recorded the original recording. And it gave me those shivers one gets, when he hears something magical.
The second thing I thought was, "wow, this mans voice sounds nearly exactly the same, as it did back in the day. And I think both your vocal performance and your guitar accompaniment incorporate new seasonings, and emotion, from life experience.
This song touched so many people, as I'm sure you have heard many times. and a good case could be made, that it contributed greatly to the early success of FM stereo radio in the country, which, aside from classical broadcasts, was in its infancy.
Just as there will never be another big band era, there will NEVER be another progressive radio era, the likes of which we were both blessed to experience.
Most often the focus is put on the top five most successful bands let's say, when this period of time is discussed.
Which absolutely misses the point completely.
In reality, it was a musical puzzle, who's pieces were assembled, on a table from the past.
Every piece, both large and small, was of equal importance to, as Jim would say, "Gettin' this whole thing together Baby!".
I do know, that without your piece of the puzzle, I and many others would be missing, as Janis said, "A little piece of my heart."

      Gee, Brez ,
I am overwhelmed.Thank you for your eloquent communication to me and to everyone. In truth I didn't understand that people even noticed the "Wind" until the UA-cam era which for me was after 2005. I have been surprised and delighted at the commentary . While I respond here , I have tried not to say too much on the other uploads by complete strangers that have come and gone on UA-cam so as to not to roil the waters or be too presumptuous . Performing the "Wind" live in the venues I played didn't achieve the effect it brought late at night on the radio ,sometimes , I'm sure ,in the dark while we listened from our beds , falling asleep. I think that there was some universality in the illusive lyric , as illusive as love can be and as abstract as my paintings. But, there is no need to explain ,or over-analyze what might have happened in a moment that is now gone. I am gratified that a few people in the world experienced a moment with me , and happy to still be here to read you , Brez. Thank you , once again .

Hello I do not know if my post will be found by anyone or not, but what a true treasure it was to find this!!! And thank you to Bob Bruno for recording this! Now I am a big big fan of folk and the alt country music scene, and yes I even read the autobiography of JJ Walker.....but when everything is said and done the music is all that counts,,,,,
I was a folk music dj for over ten years.... Bob understands....
it would be great if he could give a comment,,,,

Hey ,Tim, it's so nice to get a note from you. There were years when I entertained myself as I traveled the road with my guitar. I bought a classical guitar as I was affected by Carlos Montoya , who I saw as a young man in high school at Lisner Auditorium in Washington DC. I dabbled in Flamenco but while I played other instruments the guitar became a friend in the hotel rooms across the country as I wrote and sang for myself. I still keep an old guitar in the living room on hand for what ever mood hits. Our band guitars were stolen time and again but the thieves would climb over my classical guitar and never stole it . I guess it was worthless to them. We miss the many ,expensive electric guitars that they got over the years but the classical guitar I used to accompany myself singing folk music , like the "Wind" is still of great value to me.
Thanks again for your compliment on my obscure performance . I have to try it again one day as my recorder has a little higher resolution now but I agree with you that it is the music that counts. All the best to you and yours where ever you're at with it all.
      Bob

Thank you for getting back to me. I have the first Circus Maximus album and to me its a great album! Do you have any other recordings? I learned a lot from the years when I was a folk dj, and to me a lot of the great songwriters were never able to get out of their own yard.

What a treat to discover this treasure! I've always kept a copy of the CM album close by mostly because of how this track offers such an exceptional reward to an already fine listen. I really don't care for those "memorial" videos we see at wakes, but I actually wouldn't mind if this was half the soundtrack should a loved one decided to do one for me, perhaps along with "Como Fue"! Thanks, Robert for an amazingly soothing ,thoughtful & beautiful classic!

Oh boy , my tune is a big hit at "Wakes", as in , I can't wait to get there and start drinking cause they play to play "Wind". Oh brother! haha . Thanks, Chris. I know I 'm about a year late. I noticed comments earlier today and came back to find yours from a year ago. I heard "Wind" one day while waiting in line at a store. When I got to the front I asked the cashier what station it was. He said,"Yea, this is getting weird eh", and he turned around and changed the station.. haha. (I got a million stories about "Wind" just like that one.)

I was weeding in the tropical sun of Puerto Rico and as an unexpected breeze brought this tune into my head juke for the millionth time I thought,: ",,my gosh, this recording and tune encapsulates every special moment 60s FM radio brought in just one song,". It's adventurous, thoughtful, inspiring, comforting with a lovely arrangement of a simple yet profound melody."
I'll always treasure your truly unique & unforgettable creation ". Be Blessed always!

Well, I've been waiting over 40 years to play this song, so I'm so glad that you posted this. Not only to watch you play it (and have a big hint on the chord formations) but to actually hear it from the songwriter is a real gift! Now if you only had the patience to tell us the chords or give us a better close up of your left hand during the two go 'rounds (one lower on the fretboard, the other higher up, which actually sounds like what you played on the record)...thanks for posting this.

Hello, Carol ! Gee, that's a long time ago. The "Wha" wasn't a good place to play "Wind" , the room was much brighter . We might have played it a little at the "Nite OWl Cafe" around the corner but it was also a very bright mood with a lot of teens . I played my guitar very loud getting natural distortion . I don't know how the kids in directly in front of the stage could stand it but the volume alone can cause excitement ( haha). Wind was ,of course aquieter mood and reminded people that they should get up and go home. We didn't travel with a piano but I did solo on guitar around it sometimes. I don't recall specifically playing the "Wind" much but it has been a long time since 1966 when we first hit the "Wha".

This song was one of the main reasons I turn mostly away from top 40 AM radio and listened to FM Underground stations back in 1968. In my case, It was KZAP Sacramento 98.5 FM. It changed my life. By the way, listening to the original on headphones, it has a strange mix when the guitar solo happens. Was this recorded on a 4 track reel to reel or higher? You can hear the adjustments very easily. Just curious. Thanks

    • @robertmbruno
      @robertmbruno  7 років тому +5

Yes, our recording was on a four track reel to reel at Vanguard studios. The splice( yes, splice of tape) after the piano solo resulted in the recording engineer getting fired. He was a great guy who later worked on the "Don Kirshner television show that featured pop stars. He came to visit me at a place I was playing at the time he was working that gig. What a nice guy, Jerry something..I have long since lost track and he wasn't noted on the album cover though Sam Charters hogged some attention as well as our producer - publisher , Dan Elliot. I don't recall issues with my twelve string guitar solo but this also was an overdub . The "Wind" was atypical of our material. Improvising the piano cold in the studio and using the Steinway was a thrill and also an atypical situation because I played the guitar or organ and didn't have a portable piano at that time. Fm ,like the Internet ,is an illusive puppy but maybe publishing is generally an abstract. My skin might have been too thin to continue the way I felt about publishing rights. Jerry Jeff had a thicker skin like others ,including the big boys like the "Stones",Paul McCartney, John Fogarty, or John Kay of Steppenwolf, who all were taken advantage of ,some losing the rights to their own material altogether. It has been nice to be in contact ,in a way , here on UA-cam and read personal notes about my song,"Wind" . Thank you for your point of view .

Can't seem to comment except through a reply, so... the darkness where I existed in '66 was too cold and hard at 14; this song lifted me into the light, and sent me soaring - the jazz I loved mixed with those lyrics I could so relate to. It's haunted me for years, and I was so thrilled to find the album version here, and also YOU, your beautiful painting (wow!) and your personal expression engraved into this solo, with train. Thank you for taking the time to get this on you tube, it's a gift. I also first heard it on WABX out of Detroit. I miss progressive radio so much, and the wonderful WDET public radio music line up for many years in the past. Thank you again.

Gary is still kicking in Pasadena Ca..Sometimes I think we should have capitulated when they wanted us to call our group "The Electric Circus"when we changed the name of our band.We did use the Circus type logo on our cover but the marriage didn't last , anyway. That was a terrific arena of creativity. They commissioned both artist and composers for their general presentation though it was a popular venue.
