Air quality engineer here (yup, we exist):
1: This instrument is probably crap. Using this kind of instrument is like saying "it's between 0 and 50". A real instrument (used by France or the US EPA) is roughly the size of a small fridge and costs between 20-40k $. A state of the art one costs 400k $. They also take dayyys to calibrate and get working, need stable conditions, etc...
2: Yes, there's no way the PM2.5 was at 5 µg/m3 near that highway
3: BUT the most important thing, you guys measured the "instant" concentration. You pulled the instrument out and measured. But PM10 or PM2.5 are measured on year or day average. Let's say your instrument is decent, you'd have to let it run for at least a day (outside or in the office) without moving it and in stable conditions and see what the daily average is. The World Health Organization recommends that PM2.5 doesn't exceed 10 µg/m3... on a year average (25 µg/m3 daily average).
4: Nico, you're right, LA's air right now is probably way better than it was a few decades ago. You're also right about the instrument being a particle reader and ignoring all the rest.
5: Sam, what you're smelling is mostly gases (from car exhausts) so yeah, technically the instrument reading particles could say "hey, the air is fine" but your nose can smell all the gases the instrument can not read. That being said, gases and particles are often emitted together (in combustion engines for instance).
I'm french and, in school, we often used LA as a bad example: you got a massive city, spreading across a huge surface, with shit public transport, in a hot environment (almost a desert), with mountains all around you blocking the air flow.
Not sure who's in charge of measuring the air quality in each state but I would "blindly" trust any decent organization measuring it in the US (EPA, universities, labs). As far as I know, your government doesn't interfere with this, no matter who's in charge (Obama, Trump). It's just guys like you and me doing their jobs.
Locking yourself up in a confined space is the worst you can do. Inside air quality if often worse than outside because of poor air recycling, although the pollutants aren't the same. What you could get is a CO2 analyzer (cheap and reliable) and put it your back office. Because CO2 is "harmless" but does cause headaches, sleepiness and loss of focusing abilities.
Sorry for poor english, I'm French!
Oh thats realy interesting
Lol, always makes me chuckle when people who speak English as a second language apologize for their English when it's basically perfect. There are a lot of native English speakers who can barely put a sentence together.
@@Karamarika Agreed, there is no reason for them to include that English isn't their first language. This post has better spelling, grammar and sentence structure than that of the vast majority of native speakers.
On topic: thank you to the OP for the context about air quality measurement equipment.
@@Karamarika I wrote "is probably" but I think it's "probably is". This kind of stuff.
While I agree with most of your assesment. They're still mostly right in the video. Go look up any air quality map online from government organizations. LA's air isn't actually that bad most of the year, sure it's not in the "Excellent" range but it's still in the "Good" range which is far better than a lot of places on the planet can say.

You guys need to measure when you're 3D printing. A recent study just showed that they release a bunch of ultrafine particles (UFP) and volatile organic chemicals (VOC). Those things are carcinogens, in the studio you should be fine because there's a lot of volume but it's bad when you stand next to the printer. PLA is the best and ABS is the worst. Everyone who has a printer needs to know it's better not to hang around a printer when it's printing
Good to know! This might be off topic, but kind of related... I worked in a printing press facility for a time doing renovations as an electrician, and it was unbelievable how much ink was in the rafters of the ceiling. The whole building was covered in a very fine layer of black dust that was in fact ink... I had nose bleeds and dryness/soreness in my sinuses for about 2 years after working there, and I only worked there for about 3 months (but was inches away from that dust most of the time)! Nasty stuff, I don't doubt that a 3D printer is releasing a lot of particles of a similar nature, just that most people wouldn't even notice since the scale is usually much smaller.
@@TheMistyBlueLounge in the report they compared the amount to regular printers and I think those actually have more fine particles. Although less VOCs which are the dangerous ones but I'm not sure about the actual numbers for regular printers. But that sounds pretty bad, they obviously have some irritants in them
Use it around hospitals and anti vaxxers
Do you think an air ioniser would counteract this? I mean if manufacturers started including one in the machine?

I recommend doing a oxygen percent test. That is when ventilation changes the outcome
Huh. Good idea. And maybe co2 concentration too.
Both of these should be a good test of how good the ventilation is
fun fact, oxygen is actually toxic for us. It's quite a paradox, whitout oxygen we can't live but it's also destroying us, hence we have antioxidants in our body which can be over saturated if the oxygen level is too high. I never understood those idiots inhaling pure oxygen, thinking they live healthier or longer, it actually damages their cells quicker.
CO2 is much more important for air quality than O2...
@@joejoe4games But O2 is much more important for living than CO2
You don't measure oxygen percent, that's a useless information... you measure CO2 to estimate confinment.

I've lived in LA all my life. 15-20 years ago I'd walk to school basically everyday. About a two mile journey. My nose and throat would actually burn from being exposed to the open air for those trips, and it'd be way worse if I were running. My area was especially bad, being near a freeway and a massive gasoline factory thingy. Nowadays, I can pretty much inhale all the street juice air I want and I don't get that same burning feeling. There's definitely been a decent improvement.
They should do it again, after COVID restrictions

Air purifiers usually give off a lot of ozone, that “neutral” smell is the smell of ozone
Ozone smells sweet, not neutral.
@@gamechannel1271 Jacob isnt saying its smells neutral, hes responding to Corridor saying it smells neutral, that would be why it's in quotations...
Just like how most water filters don’t do much except flavour your water into something that we’re socialized to think is neutral taste
@@randomnessocity Yeah, I learned a cool fact about water and the "taste" of water.
Apparently the taste of water is perceived by the natural Ph, and salinity of your individual mouth. When your picky friend says he prefers a particular water brand... he actually isn't being dumb.
Everyone has a particular amount of salt, and other metals, and a certain Ph level... etc. Which affects how your tongue interacts with molecules and can make even 100% pure h²⁰ taste differently to different people.
I just thought it was neat
@@randomnessocity Yup, if your filter system isnt reverse osmosis or distillation its mostly filtering taste and some easy to filter out problems.
As a Chinese who usually live in Beijing, I confirm: it's really bad.

In Beijing with a dedicated air filter running 24/7. Back when my dorm room was halfway in the ground and close to the street, I could literally vacuum dust off the filter every 2 weeks. 8:54 : (adds in a bit of pepper) I'm even altering ingredients sometimes, just based off my own experience.
I am currently living in Malaysia and we just had 2 weeks of haze. API got to 200 (I forgot the unit of measurement) on the worst day and visibility was only about 2km max. We had to wear masks when we go outside because breathing outside air is like...breathing in straight up smoke. Schools closed down. In the Indonesian towns where they were very close to where the forest fires were, API was 300-400. Couldn't see past a few metres. Now, it's gone down to the 60s level, which is considered perfectly fine. Again, I think you guys and the Malaysian government are measuring different things but yeah, went through that. Meanwhile, Jakarta, where I'm from, just straight up has it's own haze going on, the constant smog. A few months ago, it was named most polluted city in the world. It's pretty bad.
Grateful that I've never even had the thought to ask this question
The look of disappointment on Sam's and Jake's faces is immeasurable
You talked about the backroom having no ventilation and being smaller, but the way that will matter most is CO2 concentration. Also, judging from the difference between inside and outside, I think you have disproved the hypothesis that particulate pollution is an indicator of chemical pollution. I would love to see you try it with a few different chemical readings!
Should you trust Niko, is the question. He already goes into it, believing everything is good. Which is the first red flag for science.

In my home town we have a few detectors around the city and you can see the measure by using the app it’s called “Nebo” (basically “Sky” in Russian, cause this app was made by the guy who lives in Krasnoyarsk). Note: Krasnoyarsk is a pretty big city (>1mil people) lots of cars, metal plants and awful winter where our river Enisey does’t freeze at all. And imagine the amount of air pollution from plants, cars, river and really cold temperature (-30-40C).
And if you use this app you can get something between 100 and 400 (2,5PM).
