Funny I just split some wood yesterday. One of the things that I would recommend is NOT using the 4 way splitter thing (personal preference) because you will have more control over the size of your splits when you don't use it. Also when you run your ram out hold and steady the round being split it will keep it from riding up the base on you. I'll have a video out of me using the spitter within the week and you can see what I mean.
Excellent, Glad you got the gas model vs electric. Given your there year round and heat only with wood this will make your life that much easier. Once you get to know the subtlety of how it works you will move faster through the piles
I agree splitting wood is good exercise until you get older and it starts tearing up your joints. When the time comes - a log splitter like this is a blessing!
I am a faithful follower. My Huskee log splitter has been splitting Hickory knots for years and I found my weakest link is between the motor and the hydraulic pump. It has a rubber gear that gets replaced every year. I've heard good things about Wallenstein.
The most likely cause of you having to replace the coupling cushion is due to engine to pump mis-alignment causing it to constantly shift as it revolves. The engine is either too high or too low and offset to one side or the other, you will have to do several measurements to find where it is offset and use shims on the engine or oblong the mounting holes of engine base to correct the problem, if engine is already too high either have the bottom of the mounting machined to make it sit lower on the mounting base. also, you can test the spacing between the two coupling halves WITHOUT using the spider cushion by measuring the distance between them, and also use a tiny square all around those two halves to see if they are parallel to each other that will give you a fairly close idea as how thick of shim to use on engine base of how much to oblong the mounting holes if it needs to be offset to one side. Hope this doesn't sound too complicated but once corrected, you will never have to replace a spider cushion again.
@@Nortekj That sounds right, the last coupling I had to drill out to make it fit and I was slightly off center and that one failed after several days of use. This info is very useful Thanks...

Well done video, a great review Russell of an impressive machine! No excuses now for getting firewood cut for the winter (well except for the deer flys I guess.) A little trick to keep logs from potentially sliding up is to put the flat side always against the back stop. I split oak most of the time, then mesquite also. That looks like a lot of fun. If splitting a second time, put the flat side down it might stabilize better for you that way. Good investment. You’re going to have some spare time on your hands now.

A couple of things, I think we need to call that splitter the "Shawn James" because it is going to make fast work of that chore(and all tanks need names). The price, 3100 sounds like a great deal but besides the wear and tear on your body you can now do a chore that would have taken weeks to accomplish in the past in just hours allowing you ENJOY being off grid more. Finally, take the size sticker off the back of your pants hahahahahaha.....Great video, I have a splitter on my personal wish list (so there is more time for grilling)
thats going to make it a lot easier for you. Back in the day we used to hire one for a weekend and split the wood for the year, mind you we didnt burn nearly as much as you
Russ, turn the gas off when not using. My Honda pressure sprayer tend to leak gas into the oil. Probably since the tank is on top and the float gets stuck. Nice video.
I have the same unit, mine is older and says Surgmaster on it. I have yet to put a log in it that it didn't split. I like the 4 way Wedge, I should get one of those.
A tip when using the 4 way wedge; if you notice a taper or bulge on one end of the round, put the larger end toward the wedge or the bulge up away from the bottom. This will help prevent the firewood from getting wedged tighter and tighter on the bottom as the wedge progresses through the round of wood. Not always because the grain can be all squiggly inside and have unseen knots, but, more often than not.
Oh, and cut yer rounds square or they can load up at an angle and if there's a knot hanging tough, when it pops, a piece of firewood can snap off the top like a rocket!
Hey Russell, great video, loved the new wood splitter. Missed seeing a video on Tuesday, always look forward to them. New pants, tags and all. Lol. Enjoy your toy!
The Surgemaster 20 ton, also made by Walenstien , is a very good splitter single bit only, they don't make a 4 bit splitter for the 20 ton. It runs around $2200.00 Can, at Home Depot. Oh and the manual holder is really for a bottle of Canadian whiskey.
Not that I was looking at your bottom area..but.. think your tags are still there...lol..man what a great investment! I can see happier days with this tank!. Sweet!
Try taking off the 4 way on smaller pieces. I push down with my hand when the piece starts to rise up. Looks like a nice machine. I like how you can adjust the stroke length of the ram
I see a an opportunity of improvement, the ram stop is made rather smooth, smoother than what I have seen on a lot of other log splitters. If it had some teeth to bite into the end the logs would not be sliding up like they are. Still very impressive.
Great video like always. Make sure the flat end is against the stop. Then it might not lift up on you. Keep the 4 wedge on. Mabe it would be less splitting?
great choice in machines, keep your darn hands out off the movement when it's returning to start location, also try keeping the pieces flat when you have split it
If You split to max. 4 inches You'll get a more clean burn in the stove (saving firewood). The 4-splitter can quickly make kindling, and some of it You can get 'free' while You split normally. Only split wet wood, it's the safest and easyest. And now You maybe can increase the length of the woodpieces? Or stop the piston on halfway?
Nice video. I suggest loading your first log before transitioning to the vertical use. This will help with the weight. It’s only one time lifting, but saved energy is saved energy. Might be a good idea to teach the dogs to drag split wood away from the splitter!
I don't usually watch on laptop, but had to come in to 'thumbs up you' for mentioning how good it is to buy Made In Canada! I always like you, but can't thumbs up ya from the TV, sorry. Have a good time at the cabin - hugs to wife and doggies, too.
I am so happy for you, this must have been a dang good investment. Saving time and energy, and never again feeling that you don't have enough firewood, or don't have enough time until winter is up on you. Great studd Russell! :)
We are heating only with wood. We get all the rounds in a pile and the wife operates the splitter valve while i position the wood. Works pretty good and she hasn't gotten my finger yet.
That's an awesome splitter bro wish I had one when I was a young man my dad made me do it the old-fashioned way LOL, not complaining, it's kept me healthy and I still do it the old-fashioned way yet today💪🤠👍
There's no question I could chop it all, but this body isn't getting any younger. The harder I am on it now, the less time I'll be able to live out here.
Grab a milk crate to toss the slivers of wood into to save as kindling. You will have tons saved up quickly to the point you are trying to give it away and end up just burning it. With the splitter making firewood easier it sounds like you need a project that would take advantage of it and the easy one to do is a wood fired oven for things like pizza and breads. This is the perfect build for an exercise ball dome pizza oven but would depend on what you want to haul in vs have local on the final look of it.
That's not too bad of a log splitter the only thing I don't like is the handle mechanism for forward and reverse. The one that I use as soon as you let go of the handle it automatically returns back to home position instead of having to push it back and put it in that locked position that's going to be a pain in the ass lose the 4 way split also single will work way better
Looks like a good machine but I see a couple of things I dont like. #1 the splitting wedge should have a removable cross wedge for splitting smaller pieces. #2 I don't see anything to remove a piece of wood if the wedge gets stuck.
Fantastic! I expect it will outlast you! Perhaps you can clear a space directly in front of the woodshed so the logs are on one side and the split wood on the other. Then it should be more efficient to load into the shed. One way or another it's a great machine.
I'm in love with "THE BEAST".....I wish I had something like that when I lived in my other house in the prairies... You can do all the logs you need in winter in one week... your body wil notice that.... your hands...your back...your bones...no more accidents...I had 10 or more...too much for me We can wish nothing bad would happen to us...but sometimes shit happens... You can put it vertical ---- NEAR THE SHED----- not walk too much split and stack the big pieces all in one..... and make a second split with the ones that need to do so... One thing I saw thats important when you cut the losg you have to do it straight if they are crooked th splitter spits them out
I love wood splitters, yours is a great one, new pants Russel? Did you miss the sticker on the back leg?:around the waist? The back pocket? I'm glad you got some new pants they look nice. Much love from So.Cal.💟
hey russ had the same problem with my splitter its to smooth the wood has nothing to hold it in place and a crooked piece of wood will slide up on you i welded a piece of metal mesh there now that dont happen anymore i hate to see you get hit in the family jewels with a flying piece of wood you might have to get the the wizard to weld something on there for you
Hydraulic hoses will start wearing out probably first. If you can keep it out of the sun they will last longer. Keep everything well greased and clean also. The 4-way is awesome.
That one piece came up on you cause you put the angled end towards the block instead of the cutter, always put any angled ends towards the cutting blade.
Looks similar to my Chinese, 40 tonner mine is just chunkier and diesel engined. All the same feature, so maybe yours is from the same place but badge engineered
Raspberry Rock - Off Grid Cabin As I said made in china but assembled from flat pack, badge engineering is the way of making something that seems to come from elsewhere , yours. too many same design parts on yours, like identical in so many ways and bits to mine.

I'm a studd now?!
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin OMG!! Darn that auto correct!! 😬😳😂 STUFF!! It was ment ro read stuff!! 😂
We are heating only with wood. We get all the rounds in a pile and the wife operates the splitter valve while i position the wood.
Works pretty good and she hasn't gotten my finger yet.
City Girl wants to give it a try, so we'll see how well it works together.
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin I hear you brother but living Outdoors keeps you young I'm in my 60's here💪🤠👍
Grab a milk crate to toss the slivers of wood into to save as kindling.
I've only used a 2-way splitter...that's a really cool feature😁👍
Looks like a good machine but I see a couple of things I dont like. #1 the splitting wedge should have a removable cross wedge for splitting smaller pieces. #2 I don't see anything to remove a piece of wood if the wedge gets stuck.
Fantastic! I expect it will outlast you! Perhaps you can clear a space directly in front of the woodshed so the logs are on one side and the split wood on the other. Then it should be more efficient to load into the shed. One way or another it's a great machine.
Thanks Liz. That's exactly what I did.
Yeah buddy love the splitter fun fun for us men and our machines👊
I'm in love with "THE BEAST".....I wish I had something like that when I lived in my other house in the prairies...
You can do all the logs you need in winter in one week... your body wil notice that....
your hands...your back...your bones...no more accidents...I had 10 or more...too much for me
We can wish nothing bad would happen to us...but sometimes shit happens...
You can put it vertical ---- NEAR THE SHED----- not walk too much
split and stack the big pieces all in one.....
and make a second split with the ones that need to do so...
One thing I saw thats important when you cut the losg you have to do it straight
if they are crooked th splitter spits them out
I noticed that about the crooked pieces.
That log splitter is awesome!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing the video.
I am glad you chose the gas spliter.
I love wood splitters, yours is a great one, new pants Russel? Did you miss the sticker on the back leg?:around the waist? The back pocket? I'm glad you got some new pants they look nice. Much love from So.Cal.💟
I'm starting a new fashion trend. 3 people told me about the sticker in town today.
Nice addition to Raspberry Rock equipment your back will thank you. Mine said Geothermal lol
Thanks!
hey russ had the same problem with my splitter its to smooth the wood has nothing to hold it in place and a crooked piece of wood will slide up on you i welded a piece of metal mesh there now that dont happen anymore i hate to see you get hit in the family jewels with a flying piece of wood you might have to get the the wizard to weld something on there for you
It's a great investment for sure Russell...chopping would in Sub-Zero temps and blizzard conditions sucks!!!!
Like a knife through butter...a cool feature would be a manual extended bar/handle to operate the ram just incase fuel was "limited"
I don't even need it but I want one.
I'll trade you...
Fantastic wood splitter
Looks like a great machine Russell!...and a great addition to your off grid lifestyle..take care and stay safe.
Thanks John!
The end stop could use a better gripper to stop the wood from shooting up when under pressure other than that she looks pretty sturdy
Love it. Were are you going to store the wood splitter to keep it in tip top condition over winter. Watch your fingers lol. ❤
Karen I'm just gonna park it somewhere and put the cover on.
Nice!!!! How hard is it to switch the splitting wedges?
You know, I haven't tried yet. It's just two bolts you have to take out.
Hydraulic hoses will start wearing out probably first. If you can keep it out of the sun they will last longer. Keep everything well greased and clean also. The 4-way is awesome.
Thanks Fab!
Nice to see a Rush fan Russell, tells me the kind of people you and city girl are....that's why my hubby and I watch your videos, peace up ❄🎄
I prefer the single split wedge on the end with the option of dropping a 4 way over the top, and the pusher to be flat.
Great review! Very happy for you, it's awesome!
Thanks Tina!
Love the new log spliter
Me too, Carole.
Very impressive machine. Cheers
Very cool log splitter. 💖
Yeah Russell...it can kick and jump back...can be dangerous if not stabilized...I've seen it happen actually 🤪
Use the 4-way vertically with serious stuff. Use the single for everything else. Easier to control the sizes you want.
Are you going to finish the outside of the cabin before winter comes?🙏😇
Probably not.
Pretty cool, Now make a nice neat pile and you have an awesome set up.
You will have the largest pile of wood ever with that! Plus it is mobile so you can take it to the tree you are processing! Awesome!
Where did you purchase it? What was the cost of the splitter and the wedge? Thanks
Awesome Russell! Game changer !
That thing can split the ice cold heart of an Iron Maiden !
Nice. I like to sit on a bucket cutting vertically
I need a padded bucket.
That one piece came up on you cause you put the angled end towards the block instead of the cutter, always put any angled ends towards the cutting blade.
Looks amazing. Thx Rus
Yea! You finnaly got your new splitter. Cool. New man toy! It's good to see you happy!
Thanks Becky!
That was a great demo Russell.
Looks similar to my Chinese, 40 tonner mine is just chunkier and diesel engined. All the same feature, so maybe yours is from the same place but badge engineered
I doubt it's from the same place. Unless Canada became part of China some time in the past.
Raspberry Rock - Off Grid Cabin As I said made in china but assembled from flat pack, badge engineering is the way of making something that seems to come from elsewhere , yours. too many same design parts on yours, like identical in so many ways and bits to mine.
we rented this model at our local ACE Hardware. wife & I split 3 full cords in a 2 days..Great machine
RUSH!! Nice shirt Russell!!!
Everyone loves that shirt!
Awesome T-shirt! My favorite band
They're my.... top 5.
split city. shawn j. will be jealous. and i love how you are already looking for ways to baby it and take special care of it.
I'm going to challenge him to a chopping race.
