Maggie is like a foster child... (I own a foster home for kids) Her parents(the people before you) abanded her... she trusted them... you recued her and are giving her every thing she could ever need and want.. therefore she is very protective over you and her domain.. she does not want what happened to her to happen again.. she is able to love you full heartedly.. but she very much on guard of any one or any thing that could or would seem to get in the way of that...I can say that...that with much positivity that you are exactly what Maggie needed and wanted in an owner... patience and love is truly the key.. I mean she only been with you for 4-6 weeks around.. it gonna take time for her to realize that she not gonna loose you too. Maybe seek a dog trainer or dog whisperer to give you some ideas or some training. She is a GREAT DOG.. you are her world now. I love you Jackson.. you are a light in a narrow path..
Most dogs have one issue or another, you are very lucky that she's so right for you in so many ways. I currently have a foster dog that has fear aggression. Luckily he's a small 23 lb terrier mix. He is afraid of all new people and has nipped a couple of them, giving them a good pinch and leaving a mark, but not really biting aggressively. So keep your chin up and deal with Maggies one issue. May come in handy later on when you need protection from something. I am a little worried about you going into Mexico, so much horrible news on drug problems there and people that will shoot anyone for no reason.
buff barr Build up behaviors from crate at first to "place" mat once more accustom to strangers. No free uncontrolled wandering, that's how people get bite. Both stranger & dog should ignore each other. These things teaches the dog to just exist in the present moment. Hope this helps.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. Don't worry he's not allowed just to greet people he doesn't know at the door anymore, luckily he bit my son (he's 33, not traumatic). He gets leashed or put in another room. Now he knows my son and even likes him. We've started working with a trainer, so we have hope!
It's really great that you're trying to be so understanding with her! Dogs can become aggressive towards people for a variety of reasons, it's really difficult sometimes to pinpoint the problem exactly. Some unsolicited advice: Just stay patient with her and create as positive of an environment as possible when your housekeeper is is working at your house! :)
Can Maria take Maggie for a walk when she arrives? It's the best way I know of for Maggie to accept Maria as part of the pack. It's also a good leadership exercise for Maggie to understand that she's not in charge. Maybe Maria could give Maggie some of her favorite treats throughout the walk too. Good luck!
My dog is the same way, does not like my cleaning ladies. It’s not abnormal my trainer said, you learn what triggers your dog and remove her from the situation, i leave the house also with Libby.
I can sympathize, my "wouldn't hurt a fly" dog killed a Yorkie when it attacker her :(From my TV watching I've learned that aggression happens when she sees you as vulnerable. Why she does I don't know. 1 small thing: tug of war is a no no if you subscribe to the idea of dominance. When she "wins", you appear weak.
My cat reacts the same way when I do breathing etc., like she thinks I'm dying or something! Cute and weird haha! Love your vlogs/everything, keep it up
Been working with "aggressive" dogs since 05. I know you love to entertain your guest. You shouldn't have to seperate yourself because of Maggie's behavior. I see how much you care for Maggie. She needs to learn some new rules inside the house. Playing fetch keeps her mind revved up & ready. Teach a solid down-stay or place command on a cot. I focus on calming behaviors. Think of it as meditation for dogs.
I would recommend you check out Cesar Milan, he really knows how to correct a dog's aggression. Usually the problem doesn't lie with the dog but with the human. You should maybe try to be more like a pack leader towards Maggie, I don't mean that you should 'kick' her or be aggressive towards her but show her her boundaries, because she's definitely crossing a boundary by attacking Maria. Your dog shouldn't be possessive of you or a place (like your bed) because after all it isn't Maggie's bed and you are not her possession either. A pack leader would show her that that kind of behaviour is unacceptable. I really recommend you check out Cesar Milan, his way of explaining is very clear and he certainly knows what he's talking about. He definitely helped me 'educate' my dog so that now I never have to use a leash and have never had a single incident with my 2 little street dogs
He's based near LA... If you could get in on a course or something that would be a good way to bring non vegans into the channel! I know you're about to leave though.
Sara Koponen, This was my thinking too. He has a good way of redirecting a dog’s attention or aggression and calming them down. He might even be able to help with the cart for the bike! Good prep for the bike journey.
ok so I know that this might come off as crazy but, when it comes to a relationship between species, they know and can sense who is a predator, what is food and who is a friend. I've noticed that ever since I went vegan animals came up to me more. If Maria (hope I spelled that right) is eating animals, my theory is that not only can Maggie sense fear in Maria but can also smell her and can tell that she is a predator and a competition in a way since she eats other animals. Dogs have great sense of smell and I am pretty sure that Maggie can tell/smell if someone has carrots or cadavers/animal secretions in their guts..just a thought though, not saying that it's true but, I feel like pets can have better connection with their owners if they are vegan. That is what I've noticed just after a few days of becoming vegan..
Maggie would eat animal flesh, cooked or raw, in a heartbeat if it was offered to her! I'm sorry, but what you're saying is nonsense. Some businesses allow workers to bring their pets with them to work, only if those animals are not aggressive towards other animals and people. Maria must be scared of Maggie, maybe due to a past traumatic experience with dogs? My heart goes out to Maria
I would like to add that dogs can sense fear and peck order, so Maria being the help in the house, Maggie can sense her fear towards dogs and not being sure on what to do since she's not the homeowner and have to wait for instructions because it's not her dog, not her house. Dogs can sense pecking order probably.
Ceasar Milan has good tips. It may sound mean but you may need to put Maggie in the back yard when Maria comes over as soon as she is displaying the aggressive behaviour, but if Maggie is separated she has her own space and may feel safer and not have the need to be territorial. Give her some stuff to keep her entertained if she is stressed like some peanut butter in a kong.
maria and i are close friends and she knows it's nothing personal is just something we have to work on with maggie but we will be out of the house soon back on the road
Maggie is trying to tell you something, maybe? Does Maria maybe have aggression feelings towards you? I say always listen to what your dog is trying to tell you, in her words the only way she can. Maggie looks just like my rescue, Josh. He was one of the best dogs I have ever had. You are a lucky guy to have such devoted love!!
As an animal lover you should stay far away from Cesar Milan and his incredibly inhumane dominance based training methods. His methodologies are outdated, ineffective, and above all harmful to the bond with your dog. Please do some research and only ever use positive reinforcement and rewards based training. Look into Patricia McConnell or Jean Donaldson, both absolute experts in the field.

I have a pitbull blue heeler mix. Extra territorial haha and very protective. It's all out of love but certain people do trigger my boy.

Yeah the walk is a great idea. When ever we are out and I give her to a friend for a few mins she is great with them. Thanks!!!
Keep up the great work, Jackson. You and Mags can get through anything together!
yes! thanks for the love
These vlogs are so so great

Would it be easier to haul mag around with bigger wheels on the dog trailer?? May help with ease of travel. Hope this idea helps. Peace.
I wonder what Maggie would think about Maria now. She's come such a long way.
yeah i bet she'd be great!

yeah i will check out his vids
Does Maria ever vacuum or sweep/mop around Maggie? I wonder if something she uses while cleaning triggers her.
hmm maybe! but she has always been triggered by her even before a vacuum or anything
go to Cesar's dog rehab!:) good luck bro!
you can buy seperate ortlieb hooks!! you can buy everything seperately from ortlieb! That's their point :P :)
true, i went with buying the metal ones though
I get it, I never understand why they make it out of plastic. Curious to see your new ones!
Full moon problems :/
Did you tell her no when she bit Maria?
of course
i hope you're going to do more off roading in south america . Mybe do some Bikepacking/road pannier touring Hybrid tour.
yes as much dirt road with no cars as possible!
Cesar Milan has good resources for getting dogs over aggression issues. Maybe check them out
calm and assertive
thanks

interesting observation! either way i need to train her to be kind to meat eaters too because i cant have her bite someone on the road!

yes for sure thanks
No worries. Good luck on your adventures together :)
Maybe she is hangry.
I wish your sympathies were felt towards Maria. The dig's behavior ain't her fault. MShe is just tying to make a living.
Rex Batson thinking the same. Poor ladies probably feeling anxious at work.
