I mean, the concern starts to make a lot more sense when you realize they're not worried their kid is going to come home and say "my chemistry professor says we should do communism." they're afraid their kid will come home and say "dad, I met a muslim trans person and they weren't so bad, actually"
I'm currently a PhD candidate. I was talking to my Uber driver about the fact that I'm hoping that some of these old tenured professors die off by the time I graduate because if not, the chances of getting a job in academia are slim to none. If i do, I'll be sitting in department meetings with old bigots (with a few well meaning profs sprinkled in). I've had tenured professors tell me (repeatedly) that not only do they not care what I think about their teaching methods and class direction, but they don't care whether I (or anyone else) pass their class. People that claim that postsecondary education is increasing progressivism have never been in a college classroom. College is just a combination of different kinds of people with different beliefs learning to coexist.
My dad (and somewhat my mom) think I’ve been brainwashed at college (the same college I’ve faced institutional harm and betrayal from), but really my first site of radicalization was in the psych ward they put me in when I was 14 😂
@@amarjo351 also ppl can be involuntarily hospitalized regardless if they can afford it?? My comment was about so-called brainwashing, not for randos to speculate if it was justified for me to be hospitalized when I haven’t shared literally any details.
I will never forget a panel I attended where Professor Robert Smith said “the university is merely a microcosm of the larger society.” I was shooketh. The “image” vs the inner workings of these systems may appear to be two different things, but that’s simply not the case.
I largely agree, but I think there's a bit of a disconnect that needs to be addressed. College was the first place where I got to learn about Marx, feminist thought, queer theory etc, and that's the case for many college students. We're not exposed to those thoughts prior to university by design, so at first glance it's not outrageous that the right conceives of the university as this bastion of radical leftism. At the same time, the university as an institution thrives upon exploiting its workers, including professors: the increasing trend of adjunct work replacing the prospect of full-time work with benefits is evidence of this. Moreover, I suspect there is a disconnect between the scholarship and teaching of many professors and their personal values. I say this because there is no real solidarity along tenured professors and adjuncts. I suspect many full-timers truly believe the distinction between adjunct and fulltime professor is based upon solely merit, not upon the short-sighted financial interests of university administrations.
Definitely. I’m in the humanities Ms trained in Ethnic Studies and now teach in a very progressive English department and most of my colleagues are radical leftists in writing and thought but at the same time lead pretty typical middle class life and admittedly hold pretty typical middle class values. But even the most radical of us are not in the classroom with the sole purpose of programming the students. I’m trying to teach writing and critical thinking skills and yea an analysis of power you draw the conclusions and do which it what you will.
You know what I think actually push people to be more leftist when they go to college is actually interacting with people who are different from people in their bubble Not the curriculum for sure
I was truly disappointed by college, cause I had this picture of Hollywoods version of Berkley in the 60s, everyone laid back and sitting in circles on the lawn having stunning conversations about life, the universe, and everything- and instead everyone just scurried from point to point, super busy working hard or passed out in hallways, catching a few zzzs between classes.
Sorry man you’re off on this one😂😂😂. Yep, I attended a Black University and a White University. Same ideals one was dipped in chocolate and the other was dipped in a swirl of chocolate and vanilla with sprinkles.
Sometimes I wish we lived in that imaginary world rightwingers think we're living in...
How many republican senators and governors went to ivy league schools lol?
Exactly 😂😂😂
Yeah, let's start there!!!

As a Marxist today... I wish my college education had more of a leftist focus. Marx was barely mentioned in my education.
Mine either and I attended NYU.
I had a chemistry professor tell me to my face that Black scientists didn’t contribute anything to chemistry. 😳
@chinamsprings so many contributions that we actually use in our daily life. Easy to find and look up.
College was definitely not progressive or radicalizing - but i was radicalized in college, because my ignorance shrank.
exactly i had the neutral space for my values to change without the dogma I grew up under

“Die off” lord help us all
I have said the same thing in lab meetings 🤣. But in the department meetings I just say they need to force retirement
Well, those tenured professors can take a few dozen members of Congress with them. ❤

Preach my mom but me in when I was 16.
They probably have a good reason those shits cost a hefty penny
@@amarjo351 I think you’re missing the point

It’s just because they don’t go to college 🤣

They’re spooked and see enemies behind every corner

So glad she speaks out about this problem that everyone else is aware of. Glad she wasn't exposed to education most of us got.
