The similarities to other fantasy stories are definitely intentional. Eddings said he set out to use as many fantasy tropes as he could and prove that it could still be a good story. I think it's fair to say he succeeded. Another interesting note is that his wife was essentially a co-author, but the publisher wouldn't let her be credited until much later.

The best thing about all of these books is that even though they are average length each one feels much longer than they are without feeling bloated. Each time I pick a book in this series up I feel like I'm being taken into an incredibly deep world.
Absolutely. I love Tolkien and all, but the world in the Belgariad and the Mallorean is very immersive as every part of it is explored by the characters. Each location feels different, and it feels like a very politics-based world as well, as Kings don’t just commit actions without agreeing on it with other people and they study the repercussions of what could happen. Great series!

So is this a young adult book or is it for adults? its hard to tell sometimes when someone reviews a fantasy series i cant stand young adult books though.
Good question. I don't think it's specifically written for YA but there isn't any swearing or extremities in the book. YA would enjoy this I would suspect but equally adults will too. Hope that helps!

bel-gar-ee-add
Lol, thanks. If you watch our other reviews I'm still not sure! Think I've got it now. Maybe...
These books desperately deserve a movie treatment from a director who loves the source material. I woyld do it in a heartbeat if i could buy the rights. As far as i remember, david and leigh were very anti-commercialization. Silk portrayed on screen would be great.
Dude..kid's name is GARION..add the Bel.. and...
Thanks David.
This series is tonally similar to LoTR. Definitely not grimdark.
Bell ga rye add. Does it for me
Belgarion is his name!, belgariad pronounced sounds like belgarad
Ah the Belgariad.....Porn of Prophecy. Wait it’s Pawn? Really?
Yep, but not the sea creature!
The Bottled Imp Thanks that definitely helps enjoy your reviews too keep it up!
I first read this book in high school, but have reread the series a number of times throughout my life.
I'd say it's suitable for all ages.
Rubbery
it's Garion not Gariad
The character is called Garion. Actually Belgarion. But the book is called Belgariad.
Rubus den röde I always thought it was because of language (belgariad in English and belgarion in Swedish)
I attempted to read this book, it bored me out of my skull, I listened to the audio, it bored me out my skull, I watch this video it bores me out of my skull. I am not really a fan of Fantasy nor Lord of the Rings. However certain fantasy Sagas that are worth reading would be:
A Song of Ice and Fire a.k.a. Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
The Storm Light Archives by Brandon Sanderson
The Dark Tower by Stephen King.
The storm light archives is much more boring than this and I would say game of thrones is as well. I do love the dark tower.
