My wife and I were sitting on the beach in Skala Marion/Greece. Looking at the sea. Then, this song came from nearby cafe. I will never forget that moment!
Mother ran across the the lobby of the Southern Cross Hotel calling out Charles Charles as he was walking to the lift. He stopped and when she reached him all she could do was look at him and cry. They were both 5’2” and French. ❤️❤️❤️ God bless them both 😢 And while reminiscing I’m in tears 😢 ❤️

A beautiful song, sung as it should be, with emotion. I can listen to this song 100 times and tears still flow down my face. My two favorite singers to sing this song with the emotion it deserves is, of course Charles and also Dame Shirley Bassey.
A moving song to the point of tears. Memory and longing for my father. He would listen to Charles Zanbor and French songs on Saturdays, while he would prepare breakfast for all of us.
O Lord , it is so true , very few could tell so clearly the reality of life, to pass precise feelings through singing , only true masters could reach to such perfection . what a loss , this is how true artists catches audience's hearts .
RIP Charles, thank you for all the great music, you will always be the smoothest Frenchman I can remember. God bless you. Big respect from this old Englishman.
"The time has come for me to pay for yesterday. When I was... young. Young?? Young! I love the subtly of putting the punctuation in the intonation of his voice, and saying the word "young" three different ways, so perfectly.
Always loved this song, but the lyrics become more real as you reach a certain age. No one else comes close in performing it, he puts such feeling into it, and the French accent makes it even more unique.
A legend of true human feelings and wisdom, expressed with unique talent.. The world has lost greatly by your departure Mr. Aznavour. May you farewell in your new home..!

At 53 with kids and wife; I look my life and see nothing but pain to reach my life goal and I am still running to chase the dream in me that has never been exposed - I had a hard live growing up in a home filled with anger and abusive father and dirt poor. Now I live well and kids in private schools that take things for granted ~ unbeknown the sacrifices.
Rest in piece maestro. You had amazing life full of happiness and disappointments. You found your unique way for expression of your emotions full of kindness and love. Every Armenian heart is crying for you. Although I know that people like you just can’t belong to one nation because the love in you is global and you belong to the world, to everyone who is able to understand the dip love to the humanity that you had. but for us Armenians you will always stay as a part of us.
The lyrics were written by Charles' friend and collaborateur Herbert Kretzmer (also wrote "Les miserables", English version. Still around at 94 in May 2020. ) The 2 worked perfectly together. The master wrote the melody.
aaww. My mum had a lifelong crush on Monsieur A.. she danced with him once at 'talk of the town' in london in the 60's... she hasnt forgotten how he made her feel, or how perfectly short he was..! she never quite made 5'2" herself..when i think of them dancing together.. my mother so young,, with this gorgeous man...this song is kind of perfect...
+Davis Jen - bittersweet... but yes.. bless her, im glad she still has memories she can enjoy and im suitably impressed..what a man... i wish i could dance with charles aznavour - he's LOVELY. ooh. i need to go have a lie down now.
Aznavour was the last and, in my opinion, the greatest exponent of the twentieth century French chanson. A gifted stylist, with his distinctive vibrato tenor voice, and a prolific song composer, he brought an actor's sensibility to performance. He became the characters he sang about and enabled those who saw and heard him perform to see, feel and understand the lives and emotions of those characters. They became real because reality and experience was what Aznavour invested in them.
Thank you for being such a huge part of my 58 years. Mom and dad would play your records and we would listen For ever i will love you and for ever will i listen. My children listen and miss you. Merci mon ami. Merci et bien. Auvoir.
Been listening to many other artists singing this song but his interpretation is by far the most powerful as far as I'm concerned. As we get older we all realise the truth of the quote: "Youth is wasted on the young". That is the human predicament. We are only able to value something fully when we no longer have it.
Krasna melodie.... Jo Pan Aznavur byla i moje laska v mych mladych letech...
There are several singers that tried to sing this song; however, Charles Aznavour really nailed it. The changes in the intonation of his voice, throughout of the song, really delivered a unique range of feelings. It gets me all the time that change in the timber of his voice where he sings '...only I am left on stage to end the play...' and then at 2:46-2:48 he changes the tone and continues '...there are so many songs in me that won't be sang...' Depending on the life a person has lived and the level of maturity achieved, this song can hit you as early as late teens - early 20s.
His voice brings so much emotion and truth to these words. It is so meaningful especially as you get older It is a song I have listened to and will continue to listen to, no one else does it better
Yesterday when I was young The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue I teased at life as if it were a foolish game The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day And only now I see how the years ran away Yesterday when I was young So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out I never stopped to think what life was all about And every conversation I can now recall Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all Yesterday the moon was blue And every crazy day brought something new to do I used my magic age as if it were a wand And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond The game of love I played with arrogance and pride And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away And only I am left on stage to end the play There are so many songs in me that won't be sung I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young
I first heard Aznavour in 1980 in Paris far from my native Bengal. This song now after 44 yearss in Muscat calls me back to my younger syears - but yesterday is gone - alas beyond the horizon
Oh wow what an amazing song!! How many of us will think this when we are old..LIFE IS SHORT! Be kind to those who care about you, say sorry, love and be humble.
What a beautiful song this is. When reading the lyrics along - while keeping in mind that I can get it wrong - I got the feeling that this song is about a man who is regretting past events. I hope he also sees the beauty in the wisdom he had gain over the years.
A 'big fan, I was fortunate to be in Paris on July 1, 2019 attending a tribute to his life and music he brought to life. Wonderful tribute, met Seda who is keeping his memory alive. We all miss him, some much more/
Niemand konnte Zärtlichkeit, Lebensweisheit und Überlebenswillen so eindringlich in Chansons verwandeln wie Charles Aznavour. Mit ihm verliert die Welt einen Entertainment-Giganten. Charles Aznavour: Meister des Chansons.
Every word that Herbert Kretzmer wrote hits home the way Charles sings it... I wonder when a genius such as Aznavour will be around again, if ever. He was for his genre what a Mozart or Beethoven were for classical music. Fortunately he had such a long career and life. Sing with the angels now, my friend!

Bedankt Meneer Aznavour.
Thank you for all the songs and all the great moments of joy and tears of happiness ! Great artists die , but they are never forgotten ! And you , my friend , are the greatest of them all ! RIP
he sang that first when he was in his early 40s....today he is 50 years older and thankfully still with us...what did he think THEN and what does he think NOW about his song? i just wonder. a genius anyway, as an artist and a passionate, caring human being...there will never be another charles aznavourian...
This song and his own interpretation, is so bery touching. I wish thete could be mote of him in this terrible Trumpian age. The world we grew up in meant something to us all - ask Mr. Aznavour.
Merci beaucoup!
Never I forgot your concert at Kennedy Center in 1980.
Absolutely exquisite, written and sung by a Master. So very profound, thank you for all your wonderful songs. All carry a beautiful message of life and love.
This beautiful song could only have been written in an earlier age and sung by a singer from an earlier age. The words reflect the attempt during that time to convey life deeply and lyrically. This particular song is a masterpiece, both in the writing and the performing. It was a joy and a privilege to experience those years when there were people who were capable of expressing the pleasure and pain of life in such a moving and unforgettable way.
A Wonderfully Gifted Artist Whom My Dear Late Father Adored! This Is One Of My All Time Favourites! I Dedicate This Wonderful Song To Both Of My Amazing Parents Who Were Truly Wonderful And Were Very Special! All My Love To You Both My Darling Darling Parents And A Huge Thank You To You Both Too For Everything You Showed And Bestowed On Both Myself And My Dear Brothers! We Are Eternally Grateful And We Shall Never Forget You! You Were Truly Wonderful! All My Love To You Both. Carla X X X

His voice brings so much emotion and truth to these words.
It is so meaningful especially as you get older
It is a song I have listened to and will continue to listen to, no one else does it better
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away
Yesterday when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young

I am presuming this is Russian and if it is = welcome
Bedankt Meneer Aznavour.

Perhaps the most beautiful poetry ever put to music.
he sang that first when he was in his early 40s....today he is 50 years older and thankfully still with us...what did he think THEN and what does he think NOW about his song? i just wonder. a genius anyway, as an artist and a passionate, caring human being...there will never be another charles aznavourian...
This song and his own interpretation, is so bery touching. I wish thete could be mote of him in this terrible Trumpian age.
The world we grew up in meant something to us all - ask Mr. Aznavour.

I listen this song more and more as I'm in my 60th and I feel sorry I didn'd do all Aznavour say he did in his youth!

Our pride, the greatest Aznavour ❤️ rest in peace...
