    I find this a bit questionable if not weak. These studies seem to focus on things that are very eurocentric western in cultural focus. The sample is DEFINITELY small, so the indication that this was not carried out and double checked in many other non eurocentric cultures is highly likely. Not to mention, this doesnt even take into account cultures where dancing is frowned upon and people just dont or severely minimize such behavior.

    • @bioxid
      @bioxid 6 років тому +4

      did it says somewhere it was a global study where they took a sample from europe and extrapolated the results to the rest of the world?
      why would the study take into account the effect of dancing where dancing is illegal?
      wouldn t it be that you somehow think the studies arent diverse enough?
      this has to stop.

      Can you give an example of culture where people frown on dancing or don't dance at all? There are certainly examples where some kind of dancing is frowned upon due to morality or political reasons, but I can't think of a culture where there is a general dislike for all kinds of dancing.

Although it does kind of feel weird to be dancing in front of a mirror alone at 2am... But it is always fun.

    “More dance experience” typically means partner dance experience. The video seemed to say dance itself developed social cognition, but taking any type of dance class involves a lot of social interaction. So it could be just as valid to say “people with lots of experience in social situations are better at picking up social queues”. Which is much less mystical and surprising, but probably more true. I think this video was phrased in a kinda misleading and pop-sciencey way. :/

      I am confused as to what qualifies as "dance expirence," a professional dancer definably has more years of dancing than the average clubber. So would dancing in general be considered as "dance expirence."

    • @cjspurg
      @cjspurg 6 років тому +2

      Yeah, it wasn't clear in the video. Even if any type of dancing counts, clubbing/going out dancing still involves a lot of social interaction.

    • @erikonthefloor
      @erikonthefloor 6 років тому +6

      Objection!
      Even though it might be true that the predominance of social interactions in dance-related activities would increase your skill in picking up social cues, I think dancing in itself (even alone in your bedroom) still has a non-negligable part in it.
      As a student in psychomotor therapy and dancer myself, I learnt that, by dancing, connexions between the emotional and motor part of your brain augment (as you "get to know yourself" through body expression) and therefore, when those mirror neurons come into place(in social interactions), it becomes much easier to "feel" the other person when he/she/they express him/her/themself and also to pick up the little hints of body language even when not dancing.
      But keep your critical thinking ;)

    To everyone here who says they don't have moves....
    Apply patience to it and learn to partner dance.
    I highly recommend Swing or Salsa.
    I started as a video gamer anti-social nerd. I did not have a lick of rhythm or coordination. I have an extremely self-aware personality which made me always think about how awkward I must look.
    One, day, I was correctly introduced to dancing by a friend. It was East Coast Swing and it was at a church. Everyone was a beginner which helped me not feel so self-conscious.
    I took a lesson, liked it and started going back for more lessons. Eventually, I was making friends and becoming less awkward at dancing.
    Some time after, I met a girl that wanted to learn to salsa dance, so I agreed to go with her. At first, salsa was hard because the music was faster and everyone else was sooo much better that it made me feel extremely self-conscious.
    I took a bunch of lessons until I felt confident "enough" to be able to ask people to dance.
    Fast forward many years, and now all I can say is that learning to partner dance is the best thing I could've done to fix my anti-social problem.
    Now I can read people so easily by either watching them dance, or by dancing with them myself.
    I can see if a guy has insecurities, if a girl is very indecisive, or if she doesn't like being told what to do. I can even tell if someone doesn't have patience or pays attention by seeing how badly they ignore the "rules" of the dance.
    I have been called a " smooth", and "fun" dancer a LOT. I can take people that cannot dance very well, and make them feel like they are really good dancers. It does take someone that's willing to let me lead them tho.
    Please, do yourself a huge favor and start taking partner dancing lessons. They are ubiquitous to every city in the U.S.
    You WILL NOT regret it.
    Look on my channel for videos of me dancing many years ago.

    Many species dance to communicate information. Music actually activates a region of your brain involved in processing movements. Not symphony movements, but it's hard to ignore the verbal coincidence.
    Music seems to be fundamentally about communicating internal and emotional information. Birds use songs to communicate. Even bees use dance to guide each other. They may not be interested in whether other bees are sad or excited, but emotions are just guides to action (or inaction). So they're definitely interested in whether another bee is "excited" about discovering a new patch of flowers, and where it's located. "Dance" is really just a label we use for communicative movement.
    People also use movements to communicate. We can't all just bust out a guitar and start singing every time we have something important to convey, but prehistoric, pre-verbal humans used movements to convey important information. Modern people do too. We wave emphatically when excited. We also fall back on motion and gesticulate more when we don't speak another other person's language. We're good at interpreting movements because they are essentially pre-language.
    Dance and music are fundamentally connected, which is why it's not so surprising that people process music partially as movement. Musical tones and physical dance both allow us to convey our internal emotional states without using words. Musical expression is more honest than words, because hips don't lie. It's much harder to fake body language than verbal language. In the same way your tone of voice means more than the actual words you say, your tone of dance communicates your internal state more honestly than words. So it's not surprising people use this information to choose partners. Lots of other species do too.

    In 5:00. What if those who liked dancing to hiphop were generally more active... Now, being active is associated with feelings of happiness or more specifically "stable emotions," which could be the reason why they were better at interpreting other people's emotions (compared to those who tend to be anxious or have feelings of the like). What if it's not the dancing but the emotional stability brought by being active that is the key player that helped those dancers interpret others' emotions better? Just a thought.
