Lost in Space aired at the same time as Batman on a different channel. My little sister wanted Batman so I only got Lost with the Robinsons every other week. She has been gone thirty years now. I would give anything to watch with her one more time.
A friend of hers called and said she was going to kill herself. My sister got out of bed and drove in that direction. On the hyway she drifted into the oncoming lane where she collided head on with a log truck. Now I'm crying like a dummy. God have mercy on me. @@Docthewrench
Those shows were way before my time, but I know how you feel. I still have my siblings, but I feel what you are saying. I have the same experience except I would give anything to have my parents back.
This year I'm turning 64 but "lost in space" is still keep fresh in my mind, and now with this special, in my very heart. I love this video that apparently was uploaded 2 years ago. We're February 2024 and Mark Godard passed on October 13 2023 at age 78, thankfully beautiful June Lockhart is still with a shining smile among us, as well as Angela Cartwright , Billy Mummy and Martha Kristen. Our beloved Jonathan Harris departed in 2002 and hopefully is watching this magnificent TV show along with Guy Williams, wherever they are. The robot? well, it is around there. Thank you for making us to enjoy once again "lost is space".
I was almost one year old, to the day, when this show first premiered and, if I do say so myself, it was a time of great vintages! The mid-60s and early 70s were unquestionably the best years ever to be a kid! Mini skirts were in style, not surprisingly divorces were becoming the norm, moms of all marital status' were deciding eight-year-olds could be left alone and were getting jobs, When mom was home the kids were in front of the tv watching scooby-doo or sent outside and encouraged to roam freely and discover the world, cars had no seatbelts and were much safer than today because everyone smoked cigarettes and drank tons of booze every time we went anywhere, thirst was quenched with hose water, sugar and a little kool-aide powder, and a school day often included a spanking from a teacher or ducking and covering under our tiny desks from the atomic bomb. Ah, yes, what fond memories those are! Truthfully, fond memories.
testify brother, i was about 4yrs old when i was sat in front of the black n white TV as mum went through all 3 channels and stopped on lost in space. nobody liked smith so he was the one i backed, i named my stuffed tiger zachary. in truth he woulda been blown out the airlock by the 2nd episode. even at that age i was free to roam, granted i was nearly killed a few times, thrown into the barbed wire by a stroppy cow or getting trapped in a landslide of sand and being crushed by the bulldozer digging it. yup, best times, hot pants an hippies and catching a bus alone at 6yr old.
A few years ago, when we had to stay in the house. LOL😂 I bought the entire series on DVD. Also, HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL and MAVERICK. These are all Timeless little gems! LOL😂Be well!🗽🇺🇸🙏
As a young girl in the 60's, two of my favorite tv shows were Lost In Space and Star Trek. I loved how the episodes had a fair amount of 'tongue in cheek' humor. It's too bad I can't find any reruns shown of Lost In Space, I'd love to watch them again in chronological order! 😅
I was 2 when Lost In Space came out. My brother and I used to play Lost In Space, a large bush being our Jupiter 2. Now I'm in my late 50's and still use Dr Smith-isms.
Wow - I never knew John Williams did the LIS soundtrack! Hearing the music again it makes total sense. At age 10 thru 12 I watched this series every episode back in that day < along with all the other tv classics from that era!> The Pain, The Pain . . .
Truly a wonderful and entertaining time the 60's and 70's were Many of us born in the 60's and 70's owe Irwin Allen a huge thank you List in space, voyage to the bottom of the sea, Time Tunnel and land of the giants were the man stay of children's TV
I never missed those shows! They were all terrific. It killed me as a kid to have to wait an entire week until the next episode. But these shows sure primed us to jump aboard the Enterprise for even more adventure!
I've seen this special when it was first on TV many years ago, have the movie somewhere in VHS and have seen Netflix's renditions in which I thought was very good, needless to say I was and still am a huge fan today. Now back to watching on the stick! RIP Irwin, Mark, Guy, Jonathan, Bob and Dick.
Interesting to see Jonathan Harris in this documentary as it also promoted the LIS movie. That movie had cameos from some of the original LIS actors, but not Jonathan Harris. I interviewed him at the time and he said that he turned down that offer because it was just a short cameo (some of the actors are even hard to spot in the film) because, as he told me, "I do not do bits!" and he sounded just like Doctor Smith when he said that.
Thank you for sharing this! It was a great trip down memory lane. It also was nice to see the explanation on how the show developed and changed. Wish there would have been more sequels to the movie. I thought they did a great job.
As a sci-fi purist, I elevated Star Trek and looked down on Lost in Space as kiddy drivel. But later on in life, I came to understand just how hard it is to get a show on the air at all, let alone keep it there... All these shows are nothing more than a transportation vehicle for Wheaties, Quaker Oaks, CoolAde, Calgon, etc. That's why they made it, because they were effective at distracting people long enough to see a few commercials. In the end, we were very lucky to have had shows like Lost in Space and Batman. Very lucky. And now I can watch it in all its campiness and love it.
I was a kid in the 1960s, and I hated Lost In Space because it DID come on on a different network than Batman. We had one old B/W Philco tv in our house, and my older brother was the L.I.S. fanatic, and I wanted to watch Batman. So we would argue as to who was going to have the tv that night to watch our favorite show. But in later years, I learned to like L.I.S. and I think my favorite episode is season two Trip Thru The Robot.
Special Guest Stars . . . I love it. Jonathon Harris was credited throughout the series as Special Guest Star. Adding Billy Mumy alongside Harris was classy, as the two of them became the show.
I remember when this aired. Four cast members got to do a mini-episode. We so seldom get to revisit the past. Guy Williams was starting to embrace the role which he felt ended his career, and had he lived, I think Mumy's script may have been produced with the original cast.
Everything was quality in those days even the music for a silly kids sci-fi show. How those shows are lambasted nowadays. No cursing no sex no violence except towards Monsters and Aliens of course and Dr Smith.
When I was 7 years old in 1973 watching reruns of Lost in Space and Star Trek, I use to go outside at night and look up to the stars thinking The Robinsons and Star Trek crew was up there somewhere flying in space. Even one night there was a trail of a zig zag lights and a spot of light moving along the nightly skies where my parents and grandparents came outside after I went inside and started freaking out about the light. They were in the yard looking up at it when my Dad went in the house to get the binoculars and focus on the moving light then it disappeared, but a few moments later it reappeared for a couple of minutes before it was gone. I just knew we saw the Star Ship Enterprise or the spaceship of Lost in Space, my Dad kept telling me it's not the Enterprise or Lost in Space, lol. And another time during the day playing in the sand pile with my hot wheels cars, I noticed hearing something really loud and at first I didn't pay no mind but it kept getting louder and louder so I happened to look up in the sky and saw what was slowing coming, I freaked out and jumped up and ran into the house like I was the Six Million Dollar Man and shaking all over and thought I just seen some kind of monster. My Mom and Dad went outside with their binoculars and seen what it was, it was one of those big Army Helicopters with two blades, my very first time ever saw one of those beast looking flying in the sky like that, two blades helicopter that was much louder than just a Police Helicopter would make, lol. A lot of bad but good memories for me back in my childhood days.
When I was a kid, Lost in Space wasn't a rerun. 🙂 I never understood why the Robinsons didn't just leave Dr. Smith marooned somewhere. Just ditch the guy! I guess he's sort of what Frank Burns was in MASH. Annoying but essential.
Technically it was never cancelled by CBS, it was simply left off a list delivered to Irwin Allen Productions. (Usually a list of renewals and cancellations are listed together) Irwin Allen was fully preparing for a Season 4 and so were the cast. Irwin didn't catch the miss right away. Some think that CBS executives didn't "formally" cancel it because they knew Irwin (and fans) would fight to keep the show going. By simply leaving it off the production list, it was a kind of quiet and sneaky way of removing it from the production budgets. By the time Irwin caught on to what had happened, it was too late. CBS said they had no money for a LIS renewal and since he never challenged the production notification CBS provided, the show was essentially over.
It was such a good time then for little science nerds like me. Lost in Space, Thunderbirds, Land of the Giants, Doctor Who (when it was good), The Time Tunnel, Timeslip. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Invaders, Captain Scarlet, The Tripods, Space Patrol, and the ultimate, the Gemini and Apollo space programmes (UK sp).
The Original Series (TOS) “Lost In Space” was produced by Irwin Allen and co-produced by Van Bernard Productions aka: RED SKELETON based on a deal Red had with CBS. Hey, Lucile Ball produced “Star Trek” TOS.
Or the backyard garden, as it were.😅. After nearly sixty years, I’m still an unabashed LIS fan- although sometimes I think I’m a bigger fan of John Williams’ interior music. So dark, poignant, empathic. He employed every instrument in that orchestra- glockenspiel, vibraphone, cello, viola brass/wind….the harp. I remember & 4 years old, being so emotionally moved by one piece of music, it made me weep. Years later it was revealed it was a John Williams piece entitle “Mother and Daughter.” Most poignant piece of music I ever heard on episodic television.
Dr Smith totally made this series with amazing performances, characterisation and countless corny but somehow amazing lines which would become timeless cliches. The first time this series ran here in Australia it had a serious evening time slot. All the reruns were later shifted to after school viewing hours. We also got endless reruns of Rin Tin Tin, F Troop, Gilligan’s Island and The Addams Family. Batman was very interesting as it seemed serious to little kids but totally comedic to slightly older kids, total ham.
Vegetable rebellion was before Attack of The killer Tomatoes movie and TV series. Same actor that played Carrot man also sold the tribbles on Star Trek.
I loved Lost in Space as a kid, and still watch it on Prime. To bad they ran out of script ideas. It went from serious to the ridiculous in just one season and it was hard to watch. Johnathan Harris was a great actor. Even after all those years, he never lost his character! 40:39
I watched THIS TV SHOW CALLED LOST IN SPACE 50 YEARS AGO AND i WATCHED IT ON AN OLD BLACK AND WHITE TV AND IT WAS A VERY FUNNY TV SHOW AND DR SMITH CALLS ROBIE THE ROBOT YOU BUBBLE HEADED BOOBY AND BILLY MUMMY WAS WILL ROBISON AND HE WAS IN A TV SHOW CALLED BABYLON 5 AND IT WAS A SPACE SHIP 5 MILES LONG AND A LOT OF ALIENS LIVE ON THIS SPACE SHIP AND IT WAS A GREAT TV SHOW 😁
Too bad they didn't put the end instead of to be continued that was the last time any of the two original characters were actually going to be on screen in 4 years before Smith died but I'm sure they thought the movies were going to be a Trilogy instead of one huge disappointment
When the TV execs changed the format of Lost in Space to an unrecognisable pop art monstrosity, a program I once regarded as a serious, if quirky, sci-fi adventure, at least in the beginning, was ruined/butchered as far as 10-year-old me was concerned, It was then I stopped watching it. Almost 60 years on I can watch other contemporary SCI-FI programs with a great degree of nostalgia, however, the same cannot be said for Lost in Space. IMHO, I still regard Lost in Space as a program that could have been had external pressure not turned it into a curiosity rather than a classic.
I agree that Lost in Space was ruined when it was turned into a "pop art monstrosity" as you call it, I much preferred the earlier episodes and lost interest after the format changed. The difference between children's sci-fi like Doctor Who which could be genuinely scary and Lost in Space which was more farce than frightening and more silly than serious was rather stark.
Lost started out great , with the whole family involved, the first 8 or so episodes were straight forward exciting fun. The second half of the first season started focusing on Smith and his character became ( for me) a joke. Could not watch this show anymore because the Smith character became the star of this once exciting show.
I agree. I loved this show and kept watching but I was so disappointed the writing veered off into high campy humor instead of the original sci-fi excitement.
JOHN WILLIAMS; yes thee, John Williams, iconic trumpet musical writings, in this shows music, is forever ingrained into all of our memories. In this form or another!
Don’t know why it was never explained why Dr. Smith bellowed The Famous Scream when The Jupiter 2 was launched into space in episode 1, The Reluctant Stowaway. There was an obvious glow around the spacecraft during launch. There’s a quick sound of static, like switching stations on a radio, just before the scream. It’s apparent Dr Smith experienced pain at liftoff. He wasn’t looking well, and sweating, as he stood up from the launch couch, and nearly collapsing onto the floor. Wikipedia mentions something that The Jupiter 2 had, called an Anti-Gravity Drive, that produced 250 megawatts of power, that would enable The Jupiter 2, to escape the gravitational pull from Earth. The Anti-Gravity Drive was never mentioned on the show.
Lost in Space aired at the same time as Batman on a different channel. My little sister wanted Batman so I only got Lost with the Robinsons every other week. She has been gone thirty years now. I would give anything to watch with her one more time.

oh dear, take a number.
Great memories of my favorite show! Thank you!!!
Amazing documentary.
Jonathan Harris acting (Dr Smith) is still SUPERB arguing with Robot after all this years.
Everything was quality in those days even the music for a silly kids sci-fi show. How those shows are lambasted nowadays. No cursing no sex no violence except towards Monsters and Aliens of course and Dr Smith.

I was on 1st geade ehen batman, lost in space, voyage to the bottom if the sea, dark shadows were the populat tv shows, at least for this 6 year old.
He dated that space princess on Lost in Space. Others wanted to turn Penny into a princess in another episode of the show.
I wish lost in space would come back on 1960
If only Cameo existed when this documentary was filmed...
Theme music a theme song has words.
Lost in Space was my all time favorite show!.Bill Mumy and I are about 20 days apart on our Birthdays.
Guy Williams would have made a Great John F. Kennedy. He could have pulled off the accent .
You always need a thespian 😊
Judy gave up a career in the musical comedy world, and Will, who graduated the school of science.
No sexism there.
JOHN WILLIAMS; yes thee, John Williams, iconic trumpet musical writings, in this shows music, is forever ingrained into all of our memories. In this form or another!
The big dance number in Speilberg's 1941 and the new theme in Season 3, both feature that iconic John Williams writing style.
Launch G forces.. ( Gravity)
