Linear Power 8002 Amp Dyno Test Old School

  • Eight hundred watts doesn't sound like a lot of power these days when referring to car amplifiers. However, many enthusiasts still appreciate the speaker control and sound of Class AB amps. The Linear Power 8002 was one of the five "monster amps" tested by CA&E back in the October 1991 issue. There was an all-star cast of amps including the Rockford Fosgate Power 1000 Mosfet, HiFonics Colossus VII, Orion GS500, PPI 2350DM and the Linear Power 8002. Guess which one came out on top?

    My friends mom had an Alpine/Linear Power/Nakamichi/M&M setup in her Chevy S-10 2 door Blazer...yes, HERS. Alpine 5900 CD player, Alpine EQ, Alpine crossover, 2 5002's, a 3002, 2 2002's, and a 40 watt Linear, Nakamichi mids and tweets, and 4 M&M Godfather 15's...and still had the back seat. Insane system that won everywhere she went with it. We use to play the "Helicopter" track on the Digital Domain CD and scare the crap out of people. Those amps would run all day without a problem, especially in Central California heat. Glad to see they're making a return. Some of best amps.

    I used to install stereos back in the 90s and have always backed LP products. It was the only amp I ever used and kicking myself that I didn't keep mine. Building up my current system with having to buy three 452iq, I paid about the same that I paid back in 1992. Not many amps can say they hold their value for approximately 30 years . . . and they still perform.

    that amp brings back alot of memories, I did a demo car for linear power 1985 El Camino which went to CES in the early 90's in return linear gave me a 8002 amp and a PA1 took the pre-amp apart put the controls in the ashtray and cigarette lighter as the volume control the amp was running two mtx 15" eliminator subs in a ported enclosure, this was in a 1990 Nissan sentra can we say a tight fit lol

    Linear Power was and still is amazing. I'm 50 so the car audio craze started in the 80's and I was there. I had a buddy that had Linear amps in his Daytona with 2 18" Kicker subs and Jesus, it was amazing!!!! Modern amps are complete garbage compared to Linear.

      We used Guass 15" and Fosgate Pro 15". They would get blown up on the 5002 models. What do you is take the 5002, run it in mono at 4 ohms. Then you buy two 8 ohm woofers and run them parallel to give you a 4 ohm load. That was how we did it in the 80's. I could hear my friend's BMW coming from 3 miles away.

      You ought to add the advertisement portion as a bonus for sending one. There are a few 8002's online but $1,100 is way expensive. They do have a link to get modified models from them just email. I love this video
      someone said in the 90s they didnt make an amp that would push heavy power at 8ohms mono.

    I have always loved Linear Power.
    In 96 I bought a pair of 2502IQ's and a pair of D6 Petras Hyperthrow 15's.
    This proved to be a great combo in my 91 prelude trunk.
    One amp got stolen a few yrs later on the other one got damaged at that time.
    I got the damaged one fixed recently.
    Can you test one of these amps?
    Lets see some tests of the new stuff as well!!

    These amps were rely expensive. When I was at installer institute this guy in a big box truck, like a UPS truck, he had 125 12” subs running off linear power amps. These amps were custom for his truck. He was suppose to top Alma Gates world record but he had arcing issues from the subs so he didn’t get a good number. He still broke into the 170’s this was back in 2000. So doing those numbers was amazing.

      Yep... the 5002 models were like $800 bucks back in 1985/1986. That was a lot of money back them. Minimum wage was $3.35/hr. It was hard to raise the money to buy one of those.

    Linear Power was the sh*t back in the day. Truly built for real Sq. I have an original 2202 linear Power amp. Before the Iq series 2202. I have it bridged to a JL Audio 12 w6v2 running at 8 ohms and it sounds amazing. I listen to a lot of smooth jazz music and the head room on this amp handles it better than any other class ab amp I have ever owned. That includes my Orion HCCA225 or my Audison vr-209. BTW thanks for another killer video. You should try running your Sound Stream reference 500 bridged at 2 ohms but leave the rails set for high power. It will perform like the 8002 and yes it can handle it. Thanks again Big D.

      Great comment! I always appreciate hearing people's experiences. I was blown away hearing a LP 5002 once, so I know what these amps are capable of, and the truth is hearing them powering speakers. Amp Dyno is like 0-60 tests in cars...nice for comparison, but doesn't tell the whole story by far...

    That is one NASTY ass amp. I used to own the 5002 model running in mono at 2 ohms. That thing had no problem blowing up woofers. I remember when Robert Rayfield of Linear Power had his Kicker van running 14,000 watts. He had nine of these 5002 models running mono, one amp for each 18" woofer. That thing was hitting 157 dB's and set off car alarms all the way down the street. The bass was absolutely devastating.

      @@wal Not worth it for a sub amp. I paid $138 for a brand new Fosgate 500 watt amp that puts out 644 watts RMS. I'd only want those big, expensive amps for a low THD for mid's and high's. I used to have a McIntosh MC431 400 watt for that. .005% THD. Super clear sounding, but the amp was huge.

    This actually isn't a mono amplifier in the sense of it being single channel so i'm wondering how the dyno is separating the two channels and summing the output measurement. The LP8002SW is a two channel amplifier and is internally bridged. So both the - and + speaker outputs represent one half of the rail potential. The servo feedback takes place where the ground outputs would normally be. Couldn't find anything in the dyno manual about testing a bridged amplifier.

Specifically, helping me understand if it is a feasible and viable option to bridge it to a mono channel to use with a small jl audio 4 ohm sub. The manual says it is not bridgeable, but it seems like it should be able perform through 1 channel at 4 ohms.

    +Dereck BigDWiz I have a few linear power amps. Id love to have my 5002 tested on the amp dyno if not my others as well. One thing I know is I cannot seem to feed the 5002 enough power haha. I'm running 4 kicker 12's on it. I also have a memphis16-mcx1.1100. Have you ever dyno'd one of those?

    • @wal
      @wal  8 років тому

      I've tested the 5002 and a Memphis 16-ST1300D, which has the 1100W sub channel. Memphis did right at rated, Linear did more than rated

      You need to use some nice, big capacitors and mount them as close to the amp as possible so that you don't burn out your alternator.

      LP has stated they are going to do their own testing as (they say) I'm not a certified amp tester and don't use professional equipment. I may not be a professional (have a day job), but I use calibrated equipment and I know what I'm doing...

    • @JerryF417
      @JerryF417 9 років тому

      Dereck BigDWiz It shouldn't really matter what equipment you use as long as the tests are consistent. I guess they are wanting the number to be high and we're more interested as to how it compares to other amps.

      I think there's more to it than not trusting bigD's skills. BigD and Steve Meade have nice amp dynos that measure power through resistive loads, while a speaker presents a reactive load to the amp. The manufacturers may have access to much more complex dynos that could simulate a reactive load, more like an actual speaker in operation, and get better numbers.

      @@wal It would be awesome if they used the T03 transistors in their new amplifiers which would make it a very different and definitely desirable amplifier that separates it from every thing else on the market. And I would purchase from them 100%.... Even vintage home Hifi amplification based upon the T03 transistors sounds better than the majority of what's available today... I guess that you can say that I'm a T03 Fanboy LoL... I just love what they do for audio...

    • @PeterMilanovski
      @PeterMilanovski 5 років тому

      @@wal Actually... You wouldn't know by any chance which T03 transistors they used? I would love to see the maximum recommend current and voltage limits on their datasheet... Transistor datasheets reveal a lot about an amplifier... The more that you begin to understand what and how components do and work, the more that the designers secrets start to reveal themselves... You'll be like 'Oh okay, I see what they have done there.... Hmmm well that explains why it's doing what it does'.. It's a fascinating world once you dive into the rabbit hole to see how far it goes...

      Back in the early 90's, $1-2 per watt was expected. Same can hold true today if the amp is not made in China

      Junior... Wrong buddy... These were the cream of the crop. Super clean and efficient and they were indestructible. I still run one of these on a pair of Kicker Solobarics as well as a 1752 model driving the front channels in a 98 GTP.

    I always thought these were some of the ugliest looking amps back in the day. Similar outside look to the Rockford Punch series but the Rockford black looks way better than these Liner Power (IMHO) although I still had high regards for their power and sound.
