A little known fact is that with Tony's first book, he could not find french chefs or publishers that would back it. Jacques stepped in and vouched for Tony & the rest is history.

Wasn’t it just ‘a lucky shot’ at the NY Times where his mother worked or something like that? Then based on the article the book was published and off he went.

She worked at the NY Times and other publishers, and she suggested he send it to the New Yorker, where it was published, and within 48 hours his life completely changed...
You might call that a "lucky shot" but others would say that he put his hard-fought soul on paper and made the effort and took the chance that few others do.

At the height of my cooking career in the Bay area I read Anthony's "Kitchen Confidential" and I instantly had a connection. I was like him and he was like us! Cooks! As long as I am alive and cooking I will always be thankful for Anthony's constant inspiration! And that gose double for my hero Jacques! I love you both!!

Seeing this, it occurs to me that the sadness for Pepin would be so much more acute insofar as he would have expected to pass away before Bourdain, just as a parent would expect to pass away before a son or daughter does. Outliving somebody who was so passionate, talented, vibrant - full of life, in short - is hard to process. Pepin remains a treasure and his own passing will be greatly and deservedly mourned when it occurs, but it is sad to think that there will no longer be Anthony Bourdain to carry the torch afterwards.

I knew people like Tony that had very similar personalities and views on life & death. There is nothing you can do to stop them. One of my best friends was on the top of the world -had a high paying dream job & a drop dead gorgeous wife, and kicked himself on a whim. He’d always said he wanted to go out on top and was the type that got nothing from material wealth or what turns most people on. It’s frustrating and maddening for awhile but then you’re just like ‘c’est la vie’.

Your lack of understanding and empathy is what defines the dregs of society.

It was so obvious the last few years of his life that he was depressed . I wonder if people around him tried to help. Also wonder if ketamine or psychedelics such as psilocybin could have helped. There are clinical trails going on now at Johns Hopkins for their use in PTSD and depression. Miss him very much.
