Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy on ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, NSFW Improv, and ‘New Mutants’

- Now playing around the world is director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. To help promote the film, Fox recently held a big press junket in London, and while there I got to interview Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy. During the wide-ranging interview they talked about what they collect, their favorite scenes to film, if they pranked the new cast, a deleted scene involving a NSFW improv, who ruined the most takes, if Professor X is in the New Mutants movie, and more.
Here’s the official synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse followed by what Lawrence and McAvoy talked about:
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

The hate for Jennifer Lawrence isn't warranted. It's the frozen syndrome. When something or someone gets too popular hate comes flooding in. It happened with movies like Juno as well. People loved it when it came out and then once it became popular all the hate began. People begin using words like "overrated" or "overhyped" and in reality it's usually just people's sad attempt at trying to be different. Rather than disliking something because you dislike it people do it because they yearn to be seen as different or original.
Definitely. It´s a pattern with celebrities too. And media is very often responsible. In music is worse. Amy Winehouse? Michael? Lady Gaga? Whitney? and sooo on. They are waiting for you to fail once you become big, even if it is your personal business. Some survive, others don´t.

+sanyrub cut the "because she's a woman" bs it's because one of the best actresses delivered a beyond flat performance, most likely because she wasn't getting paid as much as her male counterparts or because of the blue makeup, that is why xmen fans hate her... also she is a terrible fit for the role.

These two seem to be very fun to be around.
For everyone who is slamming Jennifer's performance in XMA, the problem wasn't the actress; the problem was the writing. I enjoyed J-Law's portrayal of Raven/Mystique in XMFC and DOFP. The fact is there were several glaring errors in XMA, which made it a bad film overall. There was bad writing, plot holes, lack of character growth, underdeveloped villains, mass destruction but little tragedy, and no sense of motivation driving Apocalypse -- it all sucked. I think Bryan Singer was determined to top DOFP, but he asked for too much and delivered too little.

Couldnt agree more. I just think its a travesty what Bryan Singer has done to the characters. If he would just follow the comic books with the original founding members instead of altering the timeline. Mystique is not de facto leader of X-men, not every episode has to be around Wolverine, Holy hell get Gambit involved!!!! Where is Iceman, he is an original founding member. IF you are going up against Apocalypse having the ability to freeze water particles and freeze him is alot more useful than shape shifting!
"original founding members". That's all that I want. That or characters that we've grown to love as part of the X-Men like Wolverine or even Gambit. Have we even seen Rogue with her full abilities yet? I keep hearing the next one will be set in the 90's. Does that mean we'll get something close to the 90's cartoon because that would be awesome.
Well the main problem is that Fox is producing it. As a movie studio they will always push the big name stars to get the majority of screen time. That happened with the first trilogy where it focused more on Wolverine's character, now that Hugh Jackman is retiring his Wolverine character, they are forcing Mystique on us because Jennifer Lawrence is a huge star. Speaking honestly, my favorite was the original actor who played Nightcrawler- Alan Cumming. He was insanely good as Nightcrawler but they never brought him back. And honestly they make all the other X-Men into 2 dimensional characters like the SIMS, they are there merely as stage dressing. I really hope they learn a little from the Avengers and make the characters more dynamic and stand on their own.
vantha doun Sorry but this bandwagon mentality makes me laugh. "They are forcing Mystique on us because Jennifer Lawrence is a huge star"...except they introduced this new Mystique as a main character (together with Xavier and Magneto) in First Class, when Lawrence wasn't famous yet. After that, by making Mystique the focus of DOFP we had that great movie, a masterpiece. Frankly, I think Mystique is one of the coolest X-Men characters and I'm glad they made her a more layered complex characters compared to the first movies.

Simon Kinberg originally intended to have Logan play a larger role in the film. He was supposed to show up halfway through XMA and become the new leader/mentor for the team, but Simon later nixed that idea and just gave him the cameo appearance. I wish he had done this because it probably would've made the movie better.
