Of course you don't lock in until absolutely necessary. That way you know the ability of the vehicle and more importantly the skill of the driver. Been many places in 2wd that I was told was not capable with out 4wd.

I used to roll like that, but these days I'm more concerned about the limit of my rig in 4wd and locked. It's more enjoyable to effortlessly crawl over simpler obstacles than to try to prove I can do it unlocked or in 2wd. It's too expensive to needlessly break stuff.

My philosophy? I use 4wd to get OUT. if you use 4wd to get IN it just gets you stuck deeper in the "woods" (or desert).

I remember my friend driving past a set up blazer with big old tire in his yellow 1951 Plymouth savoy wagon with stock tire, a flat head six and steel chrome rims on the way to the top of Mt. Pinos in California. No shits were given.

Yes Michele, we all used to drive in 2WD until the vehicle was almost stuck. Then we would get out into the mud to lock-in and finish off by dragging all that mud on our boots back into the cab. Now we had to work the clutch, gas and brake with an inch of mud on our boots. As we age though, we learn to stop before bogged or switch to a full-WD system so we don't have to lock in hubs.

Hey Paul and Michelle! It was so nice to meet you! We are so thankful for the help, and we learned a lot from this situation. We are new to the game and are working to gain confidence in our truck. We kept a positive attitude even after we “thought” we were stuck and appreciated the experience! We should have aired down for sure, we know that now. Gotta start somewhere! We think you two are very genuine people and we hope our paths cross again...but maybe not this way!

I have been told that you can drive out of almost any situation if you air down enough. I did say ALMOST! LOL You need to get yourself a small air compressor to take with you. Just don't get the cheapest one that you can find, having way low tires 60 miles from anything is not the time for your compressor to fail. I have a Vair (spelling?) that has a 100% duty cycle up to 100 PSI. I have it in my off road T bucket for my air bag suspension. I just have a length of nylon tubing that will reach all 4 tires. My compressor is mounted permanently, in both my Dodge pick up and T bucket. I like it that way, but you can use the cigarette lighter plug if you would rather not mount it permanently.
It is good that you are prepared to spend the night. These are the things that you will remember forever. Just like me when I tried to teach my Jeep Cherokee to swim. LOL

5:20 - In 2H on packed sand dirt, helps with the quicker engine RPM response, (with the rear tires slipping / low traction), go into 4H on the fly, (but off the throttle for a second or two while shifting the transfer case mode), when it becomes too slippery, (or getting too sideways), with just driving power on the rear tires.

We have a Peugeot 4007, now twelve years old, and getting rare. It has two wheel drive, the default four wheel drive to be used on anything other than long freeways, and it also has four wheel lock which locks all the diffs and wheels together. There is a rotary control on the center console which selects between the three options while moving at any speed. At the first sign of wheel spin it is flicked into four wheel lock, and then out when there is more grip. The tires are Grabbers which excel in mud and deep snow. Having seen cars not able to regain grip because they stopped to lock in the hubs, we take no chances.

When I was taught how to use 4x4 on the farm truck when I was about 8-9, it was to keep it in 2wd until you started to have troubles, then use the 4x4 to either get out, or through the part that was giving you the problem, rather than get in too far, already in 4x4, and have fewer options once you realized you were stuck. (no winch on the farm trucks). It seemed a reasonable approach, plus resulted in less broken parts, so I never found a good reason to change that approach. I will say that we got out and locked the hubs before getting in to mud, water, unplowed snow, or before starting down any rough trails.

Paul helping Michelle up that rock . . . reminds me of a girl I picked up in 1972. I was sneaking her into a motel up the fire Escape @ 2:30 AM and she kept laughing and slipping like that too. It took 10 minutes for me to get her to the first landing. It was safer picking up girls back then.

I haven't been offroading in a long time. That's why I Built the Grief Maker to enjoy going offroading.

We usually go as far as we can in 2w and then change it. Our group always sees who can do as much of a trail without turning on the lockers as well. Normal wheeling spots are the Sierras in CA.

Yes, Paul's right about driving in in 2WD. If you get stuck, you can always get out with 4WD but if you get stuck in 4WD you're done. (Unless you've got a winch)

I like watching Paul and the gang build things and have adventures but it’s Michelle that brings it to life when she’s on the videos. I just love Michelle. She’s a keeper!

I lock front hubs where convenient but don't shift out of 2 wheel high unless needed. Sometimes a vehicle of mine sits for a while and I like to spin the front drive components ever once in a while.

Honestly I hope you told the couple they should buy $30 12v air compressor & keep it in the back with a $5 pressure gauge and tell them to air down to 7psi while off road & try to go around mud. As we knew, a TRD 4runner can do this easy. I'd also tell them if they plan to go offroad every once in a while to get some semi-aggressive road&off-road tires (and a bit wider) and that 4runner will be able to go anywhere with a decent driver - only extra thing they could add is sometype of front locker (back has e-locker).

I taught my daughters to drive the 4wheel down in the barracks so this was kind of nostalgic to watch. A 12 yo and a 14 yo driving a lifted XJ both lovin life. It doesn't get any better. Michelle you did a great job behind the wheel. It was a blast as usual. Oh and more karoake videos please.

I keep my road tires around 35-37 lbs. When I go out on the beach I drop down to about 18. That is always plenty. I've seen my share of bead failures under 15 lbs, including a total-loss rollover of a F350.
Regardless, it's amazing to me how many people don't understand how simply airing down can get you out of a lot of situations.
