This is the kind of thing that gets the average Joe interested in rocks. No way hardcore rockhounds are going for this stuff; this is crystals-for-the-masses, which is great! It’s the kind of thing that sparks interest and has the potential to convert people into rockhounds/lapidaries. It’s fun and entertaining, which is exactly what the industry needs to spark and maintain the public’s attention. I certainly didn’t cut my teeth on rare Wingate Pass agate; I started out buying rose quartz and aventurine, like most people probably do. You need the cheap, commonly-available stuff to dip your toes in the water. Then after years of obsessing, you cultivate a deeper sense of what’s out there, and what’s sublimely special and why, and everything is like that: cheese, cars, sports memorabilia, you name it; all things.

Some people are getting ripped off by not getting what was scooped for them. A youtuber named Coldbrewbarbie seem to get a pretty decent scoop but they sent her something completely different and the order she got was much smaller. The polishing was very poor and some of the gems were damaged.

Bait and switch! I experienced this with an Ebay seller who was foreign.
When I tried to discuss his 'mistske' - he suddenly acted like he didn't understand English 😳
I looked up an FCC rule (not sure if it's in force now). I told him that his 'mistake ' could be perceived as a Federal violation. Suddenly he understood me & sent the appropriate item.😅

You're such a Media Puppet. Child labor means kids are contributing to the family. Kids earning a living is a good thing. Their whole culture is about earning for the Family. Americans can't compete on this level so the Media washes your Brain and wires it backwards. You don't buy and they don't work. Prison labor is also a good thing. What do you want them to do? Organize crime? Or work? So what if they earn $1/day? Labor practices? Victorian England was built on the backs of Children. If only u knew how the rest of your World really works....Native Americans still suffer so U can prosper in 2024. But that's not your one worry i'm sure.

Another way to think of this is that some pay is better than NO pay. These countries don’t have the Constitution and protections of our country and we can’t force them to. If these people live in regions where mining is the only viable industry then US customers paying for crystals is the best thing that can happen for them. They don’t get “welfare” if their businesses fail or they become unemployed.
I don’t *support* this kind of labor industry, but just wanted to lay out the realities for the idealists out there.

Same! I’ve had nothing but good luck and I’ve spent thousands on purchasing these scoops and wholesalers. I actually don’t do the scoops anymore because he is correct…it’s fairly cheap material, not high quality, (not terrible quality either) and usually the same materials over and over, so I’ve gotten lots of repeats at this point.

I have never tried a lucky scoop from this company or any of the other companies that do this, but i appreciate your honest opinion. I dont have a problem with it at all either, because i think looking at the quality of the items being displayed and for the price being paid, you are getting a screaming deal. If you think its hurting your business, because you are selling your products at a higher price, then your had better be of a higher quality material or you need to lower your prices. These are interesting and a great deal. Thanks dave! You are the best!

@@RufotrisRootedRockhound I totally understand you on that point, but that could be the case on any item we purchase from outside the USA. We can never be sure. So does that mean we only buy american? Because if thats the case, we never buy a lot of products because many things are made overseas. and american made, of a lot of products, isnt superior quality. They have us beat in almost all electronics and cars! so is it just rocks? Can we discriminate like that? Isnt that kind of wrong in itself? I truly do understand, but im not there, and do not know how its made. So i cant judge without proof because listening to gossip isnt right either.

I know a few people that have ordered these and received something other then what the video showed for their scoop, to me that is a scam, and the quality definitely wasn’t that great, I also know this is rarer then it is common. In the end, everyone needs to do what is right for them, i can see why these are tempting for new collectors and businesses just starting out. I will never buy a lucky scoop, I can’t guarantee where it came from for my own personal ethical reasons. I appreciate your honesty Dave, and no, the video does not make me mad, we all have opinions.

“I like it” GOSH THANK YOU DAVE! I have one lady in particular that I love watching on TikTok, it’s like ASMR. I’ve never bought anything but she just brings me joy, and the sound of the rocks clicking around as she mixes them is so soothing.
I don’t know how anyone could say they’re damaging the scene when most of them are just selling tumbled stone, face rollers, towers, you know - not really “artisan” pieces. If I want something artisan I’m most definitely going to buy from an artisan! But for a little scoop of tumbled stone and a tower that doesn’t have perfectly even faces? Let the TikTok Lucky Scoop folks do their thing!

  • @trala8911
    @trala8911 Рік тому +1

I’ve mostly seen people saying they didn’t get what they were shown getting in the scoop when it actually arrived, or literally getting glass or even resin items. And of course getting stones that turned out to be not what they were called out to be, in terms of the material. Obviously that’s going to be a small segment; people who got what they paid for don’t tend to write reviews or make videos, and there are clearly some sellers who are just scammers and many more who are just people selling crystals from the manufacturer. I don’t think the practice itself is bad for the industry as a whole; people who are really into crystals or buying mineral specimens want to see the actual crystal they’re buying, they want to choose it. I don’t think the people buying lucky scoops are the same people who are walking into crystal shops and choosing pieces, or at the very least, they’re spending money in both, they’re getting different things from each, and of course the trend will introduce some people to crystals for the first time.

Honestly I'm only really concerned about the product getting beaten up in whatever big tub it's scooped out of. I love surprises and the fact that it's slightly more random and not a selection picked individually off the shelves makes it more exciting. I'm sure the labor practices involved are similar to anything else going on in China.

I've ordered from 4 different lucky scoop companies bc of impulsivity at 1am 😭😭 they haven't arrived yet but I'll update when they do. I'm not gonna continue buying just bc of ethics, they aren't really transparent abt where the crystals come from or if miners are getting paid a fair wage. I don't really feel comfortable supporting unethical labor but those are just my thoughts! seeing orders coming in on TikTok and people hyping them up in the comments is what made me buy them but thinking it through idk

  • @pushpopsweety

I can see both sides of the argument for or against lucky scoop. I went Hard on scoops for about a month it really triggered my hyper focus drive with the QVC sales model. The quality is here and there some I adore and some are terrible, scuffed to all hell, cracked and glued. So if you go into it with the illusion you are going to get all flawless pieces it is a recipe for disappointment when they say over and over high quality crystals blah blah. I have not been prey to the missing items issues many are having and for the pieces that I received broken I would say I got a fair refund.
Scoops lit a fire under a childhood fascination. I live near DC and remember spending the bulk of my time with the Smithsonian specimen collection and buying my first (likely VERY overpriced) amethyst cluster and large dyed agate quarter at the gift shop. I still have it today after 25yrs. I've since graduated from lucky scoops to small shops and have started curating a collection both specimen and polished pieces. But I gotta say the quality from the small shops has been way more consistent than scoops. I would legitimately feel bad reselling half the items I scooped because they just look beat up. But yea cost analysis wise it is roughly like paying 5-$7/piece depending on how much scooped.

It's brilliant! I need to do this myself for my crystal business! China sells material from other countries but they do have heat treated and dyed stuff too. But this is sheer brilliant! People are upset cause they never thought of this idea. They do business as well folks get used to it. They may not know the real names of crystal so they call it something else. As long as you know what they are It shouldn't matter. You need to always reinvent your selling strategies especially if everyone is doing the same thing, do something that makes you stand out of the rest of the clones.

I know this video is a year old, but for the people like me finding it later, I literally got a host (of a small competitor to the ones in the video) to show me around their factory yesterday while on air (I was the only one in the live, so I did a screen recording).
They had dozens of commercial tumblers, and thousands of tons of raw materials just outside the shop doors. She showed the (adult) workers carving the crystals by hand in a room next to the tumblers. I bought 3 scoops and was their first customer. I have 25 scoops coming from the vendor in your vid. I have a plant shop and want to sell crystals alongside my plants. I will definitely be supporting the smaller business and go wholesale with them, assuming my order arrives. I’ve purchased from the larger vendor, so I know they’re legit.

They are making these pieces accessable for everyone rather than the imported retail outlets charging an absolute fortune for tiny mass produced items.
These are basically bargain bags from massive stocks of goods for western markets that are being sold at low profit but much less than you would pay at a retail shop.
Lapidary goods are so high priced at the present time and western markets are making lots of money which is why people are complaining, lower profit.

I don't have a problem with it at all. I have no problem paying the people or companies who find or make their pieces and I'm not a perfectionist, I like to see flaws in pieces because it reminds me it was taken from the earth.
But as someone who isn't American, when I shopped for crystals online I would end up paying double the price displayed, then shipping, plus customs and clearance when it reached my country. Because I was paying double and honestly a lot of the prices were extortion, especially on something that was mass produced, I would have to talk myself out of feeling guilty for indulging in a hobbie I adore, even when I had set the money aside for that purpose. I also had to also turn away from alot of items especially big pieces because I couldn't justify them in my mind. So it's crazy to see what some of these scoops produce.
It's one the massive reason why I started shopping directly with Chinese suppliers, the prices were more reasonable, the items I got were real, I would almost alway get what I wanted for my collection and I was always getting way more for my money without hurting my pockets. I took out the middle man but I honestly don't regret it because some people were doing way too much in my opinion and exploiting their customers. I may have to give these scoop shows a try.

We all know when something looks cheaply made or when someone didn't care about what they were really doing when they made something and I have yet to see one of these rock scooping streams where I was impressed with what they were pulling.

In fact, it’s almost like you’re not looking to find out if it’s crystal, but rather, if it’s glass glasses, the one thing that they’re freaking crystals out of something such as bubbles or different types of colors, introduced into the slag can be a good identifier, also gravity and polish at the end of the day. it’s some thing that really is hard to explain over the phone or even watching a UA-cam video it’s something you have to touch and feel and experience for yourself. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it. If you’re trying to only get real stuff I would stay away from with a call opalite or those red wispy towers spheres

Personal I am not into this type of thing but don’t have a problem with it if they are honest. If you want to sell something collect and cut materials from your area. It’s not going to be mass produced and unique. Stay positive and keep on rockin.

Is it even okay for the crystals to be banged against each other in the Tumbler (not sure what to call it). I know it's bad for some crystals since they are more delicate and scratch or break easily?

Plastic pellets are a popular media for tumbling the more fragile stones. Of course this isn’t actual tumbling going on, as there’s no water or polish, it just makes a cool moving display.

I have a criticism about this trend, for environmental reasons. They might just seems like a few rocks, but they are important to saxicolous reliant ecosystems. So just ask the question: Are they sourcing these stones and minerals with proper licence and environmental considerations. Cause the fossicing of the raw stones can be environmentally unethical or damaging. The other thing about trends like this, it encourages amateurs to start, to fossic, mine and collect rocks from the environment, without the proper licence. In some places in Australia it is prohibited to take rocks from natural habitat. Similar reason, I no longer follow or support stone-stacking photography on social media.

Ahahahahahahaha. If you can’t grow it, you must mine it. The impact of rockhounding worldwide pales in comparison to a single coal, copper, or gold mine. So rest easy.

I personally think it looks fun, like a carnival... but with that said.... In order to keep the prices so low a lot of this is mined from unethical sources. But most people are fine with that but Its not for me.
I have bought crystals online and it was fake ....it's not all real.
I don't think you're looking at it charitably for the people who are against this. If you go on Etsy or eBay and a lot of Chinese vendors are selling it at dirt cheap prices and viewing the pieces ...... you can tell some are fakes.
I don't think this is such a black-and-white issue of they are all real or all fake.
I understand why some people would be frustrated about the minerals and unable to compete with the prices when they are passionate about rocks and to see fakes flood the market at a price that you can not match ...I'd be frustrated too.
You state just get over, but why are you so upset about someone's opinion. maybe you should get over it. See how that sounds. It sounds hostile.
I was only saying that as an example of what you said. I like some of your takes on it but I disagree about the authentic minerals.. some are some are not
My experience ..maybe you have been lucky and gotten all great items. But again I love the entertainment value these Lucky scoops provide.

It's the West that determines value of the things we buy and from where. Native cigs cost me $3 a pack while in Australia they cost $25! We overpay for things and don't know it.

@@peridot_craponite_earrings Youre being sarcastic I know. Ebay is just a platform. I've been with Ebay for decades. Yes they got a bad reputation. Sellers were allowed to call grown mtrls "Unheated untreated Natural." Etc. Have you noticed its changed? I & several Gemologist got them to change their parameters. There ARE many good dealers selling genuine " traditional hard earth mined" mtrls. Key words.
If you don't know what you're buying. You should research it 1st. If you would like a list of reputable dealers? I can help.

@@roberttyrrell2250 Half and half actually. I do think eBay can be a good online source for lower end materials, especially since from my experience I have usually gotten exactly what was pictured in the listing, rather than here's a blind bag of all crap they wouldn't have been able to sell if they actually showed what you would be getting (I'm looking at you, Etsy), but your point about a lot of people killing their reputation by also saying they have "genuine" and "natural" higher end stuff like diamond, ruby, topaz, etc. is spot on and I'm glad you were able to make them be a little more honest. Personally if I see something I know is fake but still think it's pretty anyway I may buy it for myself, but sending dyed quartz to someone who really thinks they're getting a real tourmaline is a great way to turn someone off from buying on the platform in general. I've also had good luck with the buyer protection rules when I needed them, so no one's been able to get away with scamming me.

Even though I've heard of these, I'm not a TikTok fan. I was born in 1985, and I carry myself with class, so anything that has videos that aren't tasteful to me is something that I don't like. I thought about having TikTok just to order from one of the crystal vendors, but then I started spending my money elsewhere, and I haven't quit spending it somewhere else, so I just decided to delete my TikTok account since I wasn't using it.

Calling oneself classy isn't a very classy thing to do. Aside from that I would not equate TikTok with levels of class. A lot of content is certainly trashy, but there is also content that has more quality and substance. I am personally not a fan of TikTok and my activity is limited to none, but I do watch the crystal scooping (from Highland Crystal) for entertainment purposes. I keep my TikTok account open to broaden my exposure to society's never ending evolution!
