Geographic difference of flat land compared to mountainese region probably played a role in how dialect evolve. It's easier to trade in flat land like the silk road, so language exchange probably became more of a system, to enable things like trade with people you don't know well. In mountainese regions, language probably became more localised, more emotional for socialising with people you know well.
