Regardless if you believe it or not doesn’t displace the reality. I know we all go in with a strong moral compass but the workplace is complex. Even if you are the smartest and brightest and loyal there will be that one narcissist that will sabotage you thus sabotaging the whole business so they can get a minute of glory. If you care about the mission you will have to be uncomfortable. Great minds will perish if you don’t know how to handle shit people. So what is the mission? If it is to accomplish your purpose in life, then you will have to fight through the BS. Doesn’t matter if your idea will save the world, jealous people don’t care.

I don't know why we can't just go to work, do our work, be friendly to everyone, and just go home again. This term 'office politics' is one of those terms that everyone assumes everyone knows what it means, but to me seems more confusing than ever the more it is explained to me.
So I will say what I think it means:
    1. Find out who is who - who is in the know. Who matters, who doesn't. Spend the first few months listening, watching, learning. Don't jump in and ally yourself with the wrong people. It is hard to disengage with those and form new alliances after dumping old ones that turn out to be useless to you.
    2. Find out who is powerful and has the ear of the boss that matters for your career - the person who can develop your career may not be your immediate boss if their own boss hates them. Find out what the boss's boss thinks of your boss and sidle up to them instead - even if it means kicking your supervisor in the shins.
    3. Be prepared to prostitute yourself to stay on the good side of 1 and 2, even if you personally can't stand them. Don't rub the wrong people up the wrong way. Learn to smooze instead.
    4. Don't stand out too much as the office 'tall poppy' who is much better at their job than your boss is at their own job; and don't stand out as the office super efficient workhorse either - no one ever got promoted by working extra hard or working overtime for no extra pay. You just become the person everyone soon finds out they can dump on with the work they don't want to do whilst they just sit around chatting and smoozing those in the know, and no one wants to lose someone like that. So your performance reviews will alway be 'average' for going beyond and above your job description and it will be poor when you just do what you are paid for, which reflects what the boss wants: to keep you in the same job so their metrics look good and their voluntary turnover is minimised - becuase it makes them look like a good encouraging, motivating boss when they are really a manipulative bully who is just about hanging my a thin thread and whose survival tactics depend of them dividing and ruling everyone else on your team and relying on the tattlers to find out what is going on. Set firm boundaries and stick to them - like starting as you mean to go on by doing your contracted hours, having your lunchbreak and refusing work which you have no time to do. Just like everyone else, in other words.
    5. If there is toxic negative politics - tittle tattle, nasty water cooler gossip about others - avoid those people as you will be tarnished by the same brush as them and be seen as unpromotable.
My advice is to try to get a job working from home or go self employed and avoid all this office bull**p in the first place. Chances are you will fall at the first fence if you are an office dolphin swimming amongst sharks who play this game well because they invented it and the rules you need to play by - the narcissists who, like all scum, rise to the top of a polluted pond and steer the culture that way for future employees who think they are keen to be going to work in a postive work environment only to find themselves drowning in a toxic cesspit instead and regret the day they ever left their last job.

But maybe to add something, if you are an ambitious and career oriented person. You honestly can't escape politics in general. Learning the tricks you've just shared can help you excel even in your own business and even remote work.
As long as you're working with people, knowing how to relate with them in a way that benefits you is very crucial.

Yeah, no. From my experience the people who engage in office politics, enjoy chit chat and organize those “fun” events at work…ARE NARCISSISTS. It didn’t happen for them in junior high, and it didn’t happen for them in HS and so they’re desperately trying to make fetch happen in the workplace. I saw a survey asking people whether they want to work from home…11% of people did not. That’s them. It is not anyone’s responsibility to enable a narcissist. I think more awareness on personality disorder is what companies really need to prevent hiring people like this and practical tips on how to repel them.

I’m fortunate that we have very little “work politics”. My boss’s desk is right with all of the coworkers desks, he could have an office of his own but chose to sit right with everyone else. This has been the case since before I started at the company 9 years ago. We all get along and my boss dose not tolerate gossip or badmouthing of other workers. My boss has said from the beginning, if you have a problem with a coworker, confront them and work it out, if your not able to then I will intervene and one way or another, the issue will be dealt with. He’s a great boss to work for, he doesn’t play favourites (which I know is odd). He always tells us that he is there for us, that essentially, he’s there to manage the department but also, is there to work on our behalf. When fellow coworkers move to other departments (for promotion or other opportunities) they actually feel a bit guilty and disloyal because he’s so great to work for…he always puts them at ease and reminds them that it’s never personal, it’s just business, your doing what is right for you and your family. It’s like working in the twilight zone sometimes, lol!

This is especially true of a toxic workplace, when the top most manager is a narcissist and promotes only other narcissistic people, then bully packs will form. They actually don't believe the lies, they knowingly lie and say they believe the lies. It's all an attempt to try to keep the target off themselves. It was never possible to create a good reputation for yourself, you were an honorable person in a den of vampires.

You have to understand that some of us provoke things in people just by existing. I've been harassed by men at work just for minding my business and doing my job. They expected me to entertain them. My boss knows what I'm good at and so do the people I help. The women in my area don't seem to keen on my silence either. My work ethic is really good so I don't think I'm in a bad spot but because of how I look, people will treat me a certain way. When humans are actually good (which they aren't) and are free of prejudice, insecurity, and dark tetrad traits, then we will have peace. I won't hold my breathe though.

We don’t have control of these things so she is teaching us how to lean in and take control.

I agree with you that we can be hated by simply existing, they're keen to keep a bad narrative about you and even if they did change their mind or behavior, they'll probably never admit the vindictive things they did. And I think the safest way to navigate through those situations is taking care of our reputation, by playing clean and control the narrative. Yeah they wont stop hating, but their narrative about you slowly becomes less unreliable in the eyes and ears of others around. People will slowly realize that the recognition you're getting is well deserved, and the hate is unwarranted.
Already got the animosity treatment from day 1, and few months in I was praised by superiors in front of other coworkers, which added further hostility. I helped out with work that others blatantly didn't want to do, so now I'm a "ladder climber/job stealer". I made friends who then specifically left me out. Then I opt to just avoid office politics and make lesser interactions with everyone altogether, but I didn't realize that made those vindictive people control their narrative of me, so now I'm currently building work reputation, relations and character instead of relying on personal friendships, because gossip falls flat when you have a good reputation/credibility with others/superiors. I'm slowly seeing the changes and feeling more in control of my environment although there's an ongoing hostility. I'm entering my second year.
But if EVERYONE in office has adamant hostility towards you, it's probably time to leave.

My coworkers are not giving me a paycheck that I have to entertain them. Also I do not want to walk on egg shells just to satisfied my coworkers.
I believe you that maybe this is the way of success, but I dont want a that kind of success.

Edit: Also, maybe is the difference because you live in USA. I am from Europe and here are the things rough in the office. If we did it was questioned, or the other people were reported to their bosses that they were wasting "her employees" time with useless chatter. We were also discouraged from talking to one another within our department. We were only allowed to talk to her. I didn't realize how oppressive and difficult this would make things. I had no allies because I didn't know anyone and no one knew me. The company's impression of me, my productivity, how I did my job was dependent upon her assessment. It was depressing and isolating. The fact of the matter is if people are hell bent on ignoring you or treating you poorly they aren’t going to turn around and just have a pleasant conversation with you. Or they’ll be two faced and shit talk you to a whole other team while being nice to your face. Currently dealing with the nay-sayers club at work and thankfully I have a great boss who makes be visible and makes sure I’m included in things. I definitely do the leg work of trying to make these connections myself, but it’s been made clear that people don’t really give a hoot unless they think he’s going to be involved. I think I’m making it not worth their time to continue being jerks, but I would love more concrete strategies on networking in the team so I don’t have to only rely on my managers shadow.

Then one of them said to me, "We all know that our boss loves you." My reputation at work is fab, those who hate me bec they're jealous can't badmouth me, bec our boss loves me. 😊

Can you be more specific as to what you mean by not ignoring office politics? What does that mean? Taking on more work? Stopping by your boss's office for idle chit chat? What exactly is it? The only concrete thing that was mentioned here was establishing boundaries, but to me, that is not exactly engaging in office politics.

I need to watch this again a couple of more times. It sounds like decent advice, ideal situations. However, just like my neighborhoods rob people way more often in St Louis Missouri, I can't make sense what people here think is an open door. When I was a teen and in my early twenties I did get comments that people thought I was mute or deaf & mute. One alcoholic manager at a popular named department store was angry a new quiet manager gave me a merit raise and position I wanted because he claimed I did not talk enough. The problem I see with trying to do better was most of the talk was criminal, the type of emotional abusive sexual subjects, recreational drug related, and down right cruel. Once I started opening my mouth no matter how understanding I was I am either not n-word enough or the n-word trying to trick non black people. And I see this from people that come to St Louis from far away and in cities I briefly been in like Denver, Detroit, Phoenix, and St Charles Missouri. So, it does matter what you look like or come from, things you can't change.

She's absolutely right. I was ostracized and viciously bulled over 20 years ago partly because a lot of toxic people who were sabotaging me thought I that I had no one in my corner so I was an easy target. While you don't involve yourself in office politics, you must have your ears to the ground. Only divulge the best info about yourself and listen for the gossip and be aware of who's in and who's out. As it turned out I had a VP in my corner whom I had worked on procedures with and she vouched for everything I did even though I never consulted her. She was a neutral & ethical person whom I should've reached out to when the mess (not mine) got started just to be aware of what was going on. At least, I would've had more confidence.

I don't work in business related things, but sometimes I find myself disliking someone's personality and what they believe in.
For me my pet peeve is half assed work, some people would hold it off to the last minute and hand it over to me so they can go home on time! While I have to stay back to finish their stuff. It gave me a lot of resentment.
Outside of work I'd have to pretend I like them and befriend them, it all felt like a farce.
There were other people who did not know their boundaries etc and it ticked me off.
But somehow the people who had better relations with this people "succeeded".
When things went down, they stood up for them and advocated for them.
I just wanna be around at work without getting stood up or taken advantage of lol any tips

They are giving me a counter offer and I have been working here for the past 1 year and 3 months. The work environment is good and have a supportive boss.
India's MNC tech - will have more challenge, work life balance will not be good
Should I consider only brand value and move? or should I stay?

@@feliznavidad6958what she means is that you have to engage with people who you have no interest in being friends with in order to form alliances for your mutual benefit.
The workplace is filled with unhealthy, immature individuals, and it's the only way to get ahead when working with them. They force out healthy people, so you need to adopt some of their more benign behaviors in order to survive the workplace. That's what she's trying to say without saying it plainly. I called her out on it too.

This is a tremendous video but the title is misleading.
I may be reading the comments wrong, but it seems most responses to this video seem like "just go to work and be quiet".
Which is fascinating because it could mean
These manufactured office workers are denying they are manufactured in school and don't want anyone challenging the idea of go to school and get an office job.
Or it could be the people like I was once. Those who worked the office job for funding to apply to their real entrepreneurial passion and want to get out.
Knowing how to play office politics is literally a skill they don't teach in school because if they did most people wouldn't stay in school.

What astounds me is that so many people parse 'not everyone is your friend' as 'everyone your enemy'. I've consistently advocated for people to learn how to develop positive and productive relationships at work, repeated constantly that is required for success (success is not solitary is literally my slogan), and appropriate boundaries.
I've been logically consistent in everything I have said over hundreds of videos. What varies is the trauma projection of the viewer.

    • @JenniferBrick

I'm hundreds of videos have I ever said to not talk to your coworkers. In fact one of my most days phrases is success is not solitary. I've made videos about how to network and build relationships at work. Establishing a strong reputation and network of advocates has always been at the core of what I teach in my videos and programs. You don't have to be friends and over share with people you work with in order to build positive and productive professional relationships. I don't know why anyone would think treating their coworkers as enemies would make them anything other than their enemies.
Frankly, I'm astounded at how many times I've had to restate this in the comments.
