back in the 80s everyone in the GDR made fun of this car because if you weren't careful the petrol powered heater could cause the car to burst into flames. Imagine building a car that even Trabant drivers look down at. That being said I like it for being so interesting and quirky
There was a similar thing with the Volkswagen Beetle, you could buy a petrol heater that runs off feed from the fuel tank. It also did like to blow up.
My family has an interesting story about this car. My uncle used to be a pilot in the 90ties , he had a good car and this thing (his student times car- early 80ties). He used it to go to the air port and left it there for weeks while he was abroad and nobody touched it. He stated that if he went with his usuall car - it would of been stolen a couple of hours after he left it but this thing... His wife despised that car with passion because of the hole. Every time it went over a puddle , water would splash her over it. So in an attempt to get rid of it , she drove to a gypsy geto and left it there. 2 days later my uncle went looking for it and it was still there , nobody wanted it...
I took a short ride in one of these today and no Trabant comes close, not even the one with VW engine. But that petrol heater thing sounds really dangerous tho.
Im from Poland, my grandparents had one in the mid to late eightees and then sold it to.my parents in the early nineties. The petrol powered heating mechanism was fitted in the baggage compartment (in the front of the car). Our luggage once caught on fire while we were in the cat. Luckily my dad smelled something burning and quickly pulled over.
