Scripture bears witness to the Spirit. So scripture is very helpful for someone who abides in Christ - it helps the threshing process and helps you see more clearly what is borne within you. I've found that reading the bible has been, for me, not so much about learning and memorizing, but about uncovering what it is that has already been given to me to know. I think if you approach reading scripture in that way, you will find it very useful and encouraging. Plus it is a divine writing that we have had in common for many centuries, so when we use the bible to highlight the Word, we can be sure that we are using something good and common, and something that bears witness to what we also bear witness to, and when we understand that, we can use it properly as the tool that it is. Downplaying scripture like that is bordering on being incredibly arrogant, but I don't really think that is where you are coming from. Just remember, they bear witness to what you also bear witness to - and that is the common thread throughout the whole bible. With your attitude one could very possibly slip into idolatry, calling something Christ which isn't. So if you can't relate what you see as Christ to scripture, you may well be deceived.

His point about not remembering it but it getting in your spirit is so true. I may not remember everything off the top of my head but I always seem to remember certain things when I need them.
1. Know yourself well. Reading through the Bible will count on at least five things: discipline, time, skill, familiarity, level of curiosity. 2. Belong to a good, Bible-believing, Bible-preaching church. Decades of regular Bible explanation will change your life. 3. Belong to a group that will hold you accountable to reading. Talk with them and share what Lord is showing you. 4. Pray before, during, and after Bible reading. 5. Set a time and place to read. 6. Hold onto at least one specific sentence or thought from the day's reading and meditate on it throughout the day. The only thing I would add from my own experience (and I think I have heard brother John mention this in another video): don't try to use more than one translation at a time except for reference as you would use a Commentary. I tried moving from one to another as I went from book to book - and it was confusing!. I find a "flow" of text that seems to differ from translation to translation. This year I chose the old RSV (1971 edition. I have used NKJV for years and like it; was just wanting to try something different. Actually, the RSV is so close to my NKJ that there has been no confusion!
I read along with a dramatized audio Bible. Not only does it make my Bible reading immersive, but I have come to know the Bible characters through the actors voices. Just about every translation has a dramatized audio Bible. I read the NKJV and I use the word of promise audio Bible. I believe the ESV has a free dramatized audio Bible online.

These religious men that hurt you and your family, is it possible that they misinterpreted God's Word? If you read about the Pharisees you'll see that they too were religious people that misinterpreted and misapplied God's Word; Jesus was against them (Matthew 23 - all Jesus's words).

Sometimes I hear a voice..sometimes feel a prompting..but mostly a feeling..a feeling of Right or a feeling of wrong. I have heard from Jesus since I was very young. When I was six Jesus helped me know.. when I took a little girls mittens at school that I had done wrong..and I put the mittens back. When I was 19 a girl tried to help me learn to smoke..Jesus voice said..clearly in my mind.."Don't do that." mostly it is just a feeling of right or wrong. I have ignored the feeling sometimes and the decision proved to be wrong. It is not always easy..but I always seek for confirmation..and do the best I can.. Sometimes it is just a feeling of peace that I have done the Right thing..even though I do not know the outcome.
How do you know that voice is Jesus' voice as opposed to your conscience? The voice sounds like it's a good voice, and I'm not saying it's not God speaking to you; what I'm trying to bring out is that there are many voices we can hear and it can be difficult to determine who is speaking without having something to compare it to. Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and He speaks in and through it. You said you read the bible cover-to-cover, but without the Holy Spirit inside of you you will misinterpret it. The Holy Spirit wrote it through the hands of man and it can only be fully understood by the Holy Spirit. Kathleen you've been deceived. Jesus never himself wrote any of the scripture, it was the Holy Spirit that was working through Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, etc. The way we know about Jesus's ministry one earth is through the writings of Matthew yes, but also the writings of the other apostles. To reject the rest of the Word God has given us is foolish. Jesus came and made disciples, on the day of Pentecost they got the same Spirit He has. But we hear God through the word, yes we can hear Him other ways, but we must know the word to know if that lines up with scripture as Paul says "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." Just about every translation has a dramatized audio Bible. I read the NKJV and I use the word of promise audio Bible. I believe the ESV has a free dramatized audio Bible online.

+Jason 333..I read the bible cover to cover and was very concerned about the discrepancies. In Mattew 6:33 Jesus says.."Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God and HIS Righteousness." So I ask Jesus to Help me read the bible and He Did. I read every word again as He showed me which verses were Right for me. I marked those verses and those are the ones I read. Most of my bible is unmarked. I TRUST Jesus.. And I no longer listen to men. Jesus is my Savior. I am sorry..but you and John Piper qualify as men.

+Delina Davis..Jesus used the scriptures in the OT to tell the people of His Day that the scriptures told of His Coming. He was trying to refresh the Pharisees minds. That is the main purpose of the OT..is to tell us that Jesus is Coming and will bring us a New and Better Way. He Came and He is HERE..as an individual Personal Savior for us All..Each of us. Do you have to be reminded again and again as the Pharisees? The bible verse you quoted..He is talking to the Pharisees. I Do Not have to be reminded that He is HERE and my Personal Savior. "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." you have read your bible and you still don't know Jesus. If you are going to read the bible to get to know God..it seems you should know what He said. It took me years of suffering..to finally realize..Jesus is The Only Safe Place to Be. I am now Happy and Healthy and Whole. Believe me..I Will Never Leave Jesus!! That was a hard lesson. These religious men that hurt you and your family, is it possible that they misinterpreted God's Word? If you read about the Pharisees you'll see that they too were religious people that misinterpreted and misapplied God's Word; Jesus was against them (Matthew 23 - all Jesus's words).

My parents died tragically when I was seven years old because of religion and my own life suffering..being beaten up daily by men and their religions. Second of all..Matthew recorded Jesus Sayings accurately and I Know what Jesus wants me to do. That is where the Truth is. Paul is irrelevant for me. I Seek Jesus. Jesus does not Give Paul inspiration for me. Why would I care what Paul said? When I can go to Jesus?
People can change. Paul changed for the better! He became someone who loved Jesus and encounter the church. He led so many to Christ!

Jesus is Forgiveness. Those who forgive will be forgiven. Those who don’t forgive will not be forgiven. The choice is yours. Jesus gave Paul another chance..which was very fortunate because Paul was a murderer. Now if Paul Forgives..he will be ok.

I don’t know that..and if you think so..it won’t make any difference. Paul either forgave or he didn’t. That is Gods judgment. I know what Paul said and what he said he did..but I don’t know what he did. Only God knows that.
+Collette Alexander..I try to be still and listen for Jesus. I ask Him to Help me Know what is Right for me. Sometimes I hear a voice..sometimes feel a prompting..but mostly a feeling..a feeling of Right or a feeling of wrong. I have heard from Jesus since I was very young. When I was six Jesus helped me know.. when I took a little girls mittens at school that I had done wrong..and I put the mittens back. When I was 19 a girl tried to help me learn to smoke..Jesus voice said..clearly in my mind.."Don't do that." mostly it is just a feeling of right or wrong. I have ignored the feeling sometimes and the decision proved to be wrong. It is not always easy..but I always seek for confirmation..and do the best I can.. Sometimes it is just a feeling of peace that I have done the Right thing..even though I do not know the outcome.
How do you know that voice is Jesus' voice as opposed to your conscience? The voice sounds like it's a good voice, and I'm not saying it's not God speaking to you; what I'm trying to bring out is that there are many voices we can hear and it can be difficult to determine who is speaking without having something to compare it to. Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and He speaks in and through it. You said you read the bible cover-to-cover, but without the Holy Spirit inside of you you will misinterpret it. The Holy Spirit wrote it through the hands of man and it can only be fully understood by the Holy Spirit. I pray that you will allow the Holy Spirit into your heart and that He will guide you in reading His Word.

+Collette Alexander..I totally agree with.."God is Perfect and His Word is True." That is why I am very careful to listen to Jesus..Alone. Men are fallible..all of them..and that is who wrote the bible. Jesus tells me what in the bible is Right..for ToDay. And that is all that concerns me.

Kathleen you've been deceived. Jesus never himself wrote any of the scripture, it was the Holy Spirit that was working through Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, etc. The way we know about Jesus's ministry one earth is through the writings of Matthew yes, but also the writings of the other apostles. To reject the rest of the Word God has given us is foolish. Jesus came and made disciples, on the day of Pentecost they got the same Spirit He has. We also as believers have that same Spirit, which allows us to line up anything we hear against the Word of God. I'm sorry about your past experiences with other believers, we're far from perfect. But God is perfect and His Word is true.

But we hear God through the word, yes we can hear Him other ways, but we must know the word to know if that lines up with scripture as Paul says "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." That means we must know the gospel he is preaching.
