I knew this movie was a blockbuster in 2015. Being a Tamilan, I never watched the movie. However I watched this movie few months ago with subtitles and I really liked the movie especially the heart break scene with malar. It was one of the most emotionally shot scenes that I have ever seen. May be it is because we all have had heart breaks in our lives and we’re able to connect with that feeling. In India, most of the first love ends up in heart break. I agree with many in this group that foreigners may not resonate with this movie. I can see jaby’s body language during reaction. He is not interested in the movie. He has been discussing about camera and angles. Achaea was excited. But her final summary is that she is not liking protagonist. Premam is a gem in Indian cinema and will remain so.
There is only a 35% chance to get a job after taking a degree form a non reputated college.there is a high chance you will get another job not related to the course you took
I saw this movie in my 20s. Even as a girl, I could relate to this movie and felt nostalgic because I have seen boys in my school college time who were like this. And at that age we kind of idolise and crush on brash and outgoing rough men. Now in my 30s I see what you see. I feel the same way as you discussed. The main character never learned anything or changed his way. He is there, things happening to him. Things are given to him and taken away from him. He mad about it, does nothing and living with it. That's it. Thank you. Many of them may go harsh on you guys for giving such open mature reviews. People in Kerala tend to cling to nostalgia and old feelings more than to change themselves. Thank you for bringing about the change of view for me on this movie. And it was necessary.
One comment period. I like this comment as you present both the kind of perspectives - why the movie felt good and the corresponding viewpoint & why it is just a good movie, lacking the impact.
Thing is that you're loosing small details inside the story, like its shown they have already failed in school for a year, and their current age at college is 21 and a guest lecturer could be as young as 24 here. And some cultural nuances that will be hard for you to follow (even for north indians ), this movie is full of such stuffs, thats the basic essence of this movie. And thats why movie became such a pathbreaking movie of this generation down here at south. And there are many little things on entertainment level that malayalis will only get, like the George's dad character is ranji panciker who was a leading screenwriter in malayalam @90s who penned many blockbuster political thrillers with long english dialogues at that time, so its like spoofing himself with that english dialogue he says here, also that music is from his superhit movie 'commisioner'. so you would find hard to get the real essence of south indian films(barring the mass masala movies). I think jaby has already said before he find it hard to enjoy movies like super deluxe and kumbalangi nights, but he enjoyed 2.0 more.
@@abhijith8640 thats true he havent watched before series of ric linklater, but he compares this movie to them, thats a stupid analogy. You could compare movie 96 to before sunset, but not this. And the base outline of this movie is comparing love to the life cycle of a butterfly, 3 stages. from pupa, catterpiller to butterfly, even the cinematography is built on that, before giving authentic reviews to their 2 million subscriber , a bit more work and effort has to be put on understanding cinema language of each culture
Cousin marriages are not weird in South India ,especially in my state (Andhra),the marriage is between cross cousins, that is, children born to a brother and sister, not two sisters and not two brothers.
the thing is...it's very toxic but people don't realise. there's stalking, teacher student relationships, age gaps, obsessive behaviour, toxic men etc. but it's very loved. and if you ignore these problems, you can watch it fine
Nivin's dad is Renji panicker...he is known for his fire and power dialogues and scripts in malayalam movies...Probably every malayali will get goosebumps if it's Renji panicker 's script....
That cake scene is very common in Malayalam movies for eating almost everything.. Most of the directors do that to emphasise that they are enjoying what they are eating..
The trend here in Malayalam movies is pretty much like real life. Everyone in their mind is a Protagonist. But for everyone else you may be a Antagonist. In real life you can't be always good. Like that here the main character here is not someone who is always correct or he may not learn from his mistakes. He was totally himself. He didn't assess himself too much. Here is the story of someone who is not a good guy or a bad guy just living his life. Pupil here in Kerala could really connect to his character, since all of us had similar experiences in one way or the other.
The meaning of the last quote is As the film itself concludes, "God unified the flowers which cannot travel with the butterflies, and for ye flowers which can, He bestowed upon thee with butterflies as the emotion of love!"
Fact: When this movie got released, youngsters(across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh) were thronging theatres and were so crazy about the movie that they skipped their classes. In Kerala, students from various schools and colleges were detained by the police as a part of Operation Gurukulam following the complaints given by staffs from the respective institutions. There was also a vandalism case in a theatre because the screening was stopped in between due to some technical issue. This movie actually earned a cult status.
Premam is not about logic it's all about the feel , every person who fell in love , lost love , had one sided love can relate to it . It symbolises the romance culture in India ❤️
I appreciate jaby for taking his time to watch a Malayalam movie. So thank you jaby so much. He rarely does this. I know he has a lot of things going on in his real life. For the commenter saying jaby is bored or not into the story or achara is smarter then jaby. It like you ever love reading books. Why the you are watching videos instead of reading books. Are you visual learner then. Then jaby is visual learner. Archara is a bookworm. Is that simple. Just stop showing the your double edge sword against jaby. He is non indian and non Malayalee. You can't expect him to read subtitle. If we are not reading subtitle when we are watching movies. Why should he watch movies with subtitle? Majority of us even hardly a touch book. We can see that from george from point of view. Since when George touched a book in this film in the college. We here is all about soical life. Jaby will think like that. This video tells that malayalam films are dialogue heavy fast and same with subtitle. Jaby has unique talent then achara. He looks at how the scene is shot and take the meaning out of it. He does not have to understand the story or enjoy the film like many of us. He can enjoy of a film watching a scene. Why not we read erotic novel instead of looking at playboy magazine or those vouge magazine. Come on guys give him break and appreciate his viewing skills for once.
@Jaby and @Achara This movie might be a bit of a problem for non-Indians/Non-Malayalis to understand. It was one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade and mainly because of the realistic nature of the movie that was expressed in a humorous way and the movie had lots of emotions that we, as people from Kerala, completed our education in the colleges and schools in Kerala, with all the cultural and variations in expressing emotions, this was a great movie. I could personally relate to the 2nd part of the movie to some extent and I was literally very emotional when George was crying that bad. And I can really relate to the spontaneous actions/reactions of George to get Celine. He did not go for any Melo-dramas and didn't wanted to take that chance of trying to know a girl once again, date her and finally get rejected/lose her. So, I think that's why he just went for it rather than spending/wasting a whole lot of time trying to deal with the emotions related to finding his love. I got married to the girl in almost the similar way. After losing my first love...and blah blah blah....I did not wanted to go for another setback. I just proposed my now wife at the church and asked her out. That was my gut instinct and I didn't even know anything about her for the fact that I had seen her previously only once briefly in a friends party. Now we are happily married for the last 3 years. My friend at church really admired my guts to propose her straight without any ground knowledge about her and she becoming my wife. I still believe, the only reason I moved from Calgary to Vancouver was to meet this girl and nothing else. Regarding the business part, it is common among the youngsters in Kerala after their college, to start some business based on either their education or their skills/interest/extra curricular activities. It's like, I studied social work and working in a healthcare sector. But, I also have a business of teaching IELTS and CELPIP and I am running an institute for the same. Thanks
In india, student join the college for bachelors degree at the age of 18, at the final year they will be 21 years old. (other than engineering and medicine )
Well I graduated in Hotel Management and ended up working random BPO jobs for almost 13 years and then became a content writer and translator. Education system in India is such exceptions being those who study Engineering and Medicine where majority of them continue to work in the field in which they specialized in college.
South Indians get married to their cousins all the time. The only condition is that the cousin has to be your paternal aunt's child or your maternal uncle's child.
26:14 that's a pretty great catch to be honest. It does give off an Everybody wants some vibe at times. Premam's mix of emotion and irreverace, also fits with Linklater's brand
It's very common in kerala where they learn in college something and do something different in their future and it doesn't have to be something your interested. My uncle did engineering and now he owns a restaurant, it was out of nowhere 😂. Many mallus are in business for no apparent reason 😂.
In the movie, Malar and her cousin got married to each other because of the culture or the tradition they follow I.e. Hindus from Kerala accept their cousins as future in-laws most of the time. It's somewhat a normal thing
That is the singlemost wrong statement I have heard in a while. It is not a "normal" thing at all, atleast in the last 40 years or so. It is only prevalent in Malayalam cinema, that too older ones, until around early 00's or so. As my life of a 36 year old malayali born in a Hindu family, I have not seen a single person married to his/her cousin in my whole life. Yes , of course there is a concept called "murapennu" or "murachekkan" which means the cousin (uncles daughter/son) etc whom you can marry. But that is in the olden days when you did not want your properties to be going to outsiders, similar to the concept of ancient kingdoms. Of course, there might be exceptions where people do this here and there, but it is far from the "normal" thing in the modern times.
I totally agree with you the fact he didn't learn anything. But I've got say that u missed a lot jaby. In every scene and dialogue there are many references and cultural appropriation that it's hard for others to understand. That's y this movie is a big deal in keral and tamil nadu. Telegu tried to remake this but failed in making this. This movie has many components that only touches the original audience ( Malayalam and Tamil). But thanks for the movie review. 😀
@Jaby! Hi there … first of all a big thanks to you.. your DM (you replied to my dm actually)helped a lot at a point of time when I was under depression. Your text brought a smile on my face after a long 6 months… as for the movie … George in college is a typical Kerala popular guy behaviour… where he has all the power among other students and all are basically either scared or respect them…Also the guy who gets beaten. Up in the end is the director of the movie… Alphonse Puthren
Very good review. Your observations are a true mirror to Keralites on the social conditioning we get from college. Don’t get me wrong, we all enjoy our college days. But too many of us go into “higher education” for the sake of it, not to pursue a passion but just to satisfy social requirement, be hooligans or be at the mercy of political parties.
Apart from the teacher student thing, the hero is actually older as he has been in the college for ages, not bothering to pass out . I think that is what I remember from a conversation in the movie. Correct me guys if I am wrong, it's been ages since I saw the movie

9:06 It was a shocking moment for us when we watched this movie in theater...
Really?...awww I missed watching this epic in theatre
It’s common in Kerala. In college, students and teachers interact more friendly.
Very true !!!!!
Love this comment
Because he doesn't understand the basics of a movie and always starts to compare movie scenes with Hollywood. He like mass masala movies I guess
It is very less in Kerala.
Achara: almost understands everything
Jaby: who am I? Where am I? What is happening over here
the thing is...it's very toxic but people don't realise. there's stalking, teacher student relationships, age gaps, obsessive behaviour, toxic men etc. but it's very loved. and if you ignore these problems, you can watch it fine
"..Turns people into self centred a**holes"
"Is that what you used?"
I thought Jaby was gonna get slapped 😆😆
The look Achara gave him was priceless 🤭
Ya.. that was rude... not funny..
You would really appreciate "mayanadhi" it's great movie where you wouldn't know what you are feeling.
Really great movie 👌👌
While Achara is enjoying the movie, meanwhile jaby is tired of reading subtitles 😅
The meaning of the last quote is
As the film itself concludes, "God unified the flowers which cannot travel with the butterflies, and for ye flowers which can, He bestowed upon thee with butterflies as the emotion of love!"
22:43 - destroyed in seconds😂😂😂😂
The man beaten by George and friends at the last, he is the director of the film, Alphonse Puthran
The atmosphere in the movie is a main part.
That cool and breezy one.
That's the reason u fall in love this craft
'Ayappanum koshiyum' must watch malayalam movie💯💯🔥🔥
That was burn at 22:45 Jaby, I laughed the hell out.... 😂😂😂
@Jaby and @Achara
This movie might be a bit of a problem for non-Indians/Non-Malayalis to understand.
Thanks
The fiance who gets trashed by George and his friends is the Director of the movie..... Alphonse Puthren
The guy played husband at the Celine chapter is the director of the movie.
The guy Roney Vargese (Alphonse puthren)23:47 is the director of tis movie ...
22:42 achara is going to beat jaby LOL
South Indians get married to their cousins all the time. The only condition is that the cousin has to be your paternal aunt's child or your maternal uncle's child.
22:43 That was smooth 😂
26:14 that's a pretty great catch to be honest. It does give off an Everybody wants some vibe at times. Premam's mix of emotion and irreverace, also fits with Linklater's brand
But actually there was a tradition prevailing where people marry their cousins in Tamilnadu
Please show Johnny Rome some Malayalam Movies. I bet he would enjoy it a a lot ❤️❤️
I like how every single scene Achara enjoys.. especially love scenes ❤️
Jaby : Is that what u used? 😂🤣😁
Achara : seriously dude 😒😒
It's very common in kerala where they learn in college something and do something different in their future and it doesn't have to be something your interested. My uncle did engineering and now he owns a restaurant, it was out of nowhere 😂. Many mallus are in business for no apparent reason 😂.
Oh yea🤟.. More Premam❤️
Yeah... You is wrong, it ain't normal.
PLEASE WATCH THE MALAYALAM MOVIE 'AYYAPANUM KOSHIYUM'!!!! 😭😭😭🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Watch it....
Onu poda
when jaby said why's she not teaching and just walking around😭😭🤣🤣🤣
This is the first malayalam film viewed by many Indians...
Because of the college part, there was scarcity for black shirts in shops😆😆
I totally agree with you the fact he didn't learn anything. But I've got say that u missed a lot jaby. In every scene and dialogue there are many references and cultural appropriation that it's hard for others to understand. That's y this movie is a big deal in keral and tamil nadu. Telegu tried to remake this but failed in making this. This movie has many components that only touches the original audience ( Malayalam and Tamil). But thanks for the movie review. 😀
Please watch full version Patreon
@@bencytony2556 no money 😑😑 who suggest this film 🤔🤔🤔
Telugu remake localized it and became a hit in the region. It definitely did not fail.
@@arthurmorgan8765 yeah but a trashy ass remake
Sai pallavi actually won many awards in State-level dance.. She's an excellent dancer 🔥
George was 22 during college and 30 in the 3rd segment. They do mention the age during the swimming pool scene
I know jaby would say it's good eventhough he was not into it the whole time..he remembers what happened while the kumbalangi review i think 😂
The dad is played by an extra ordinary actor and a scriptwritter in 90s
No they said cockroach.
They were drunk as f
Please watch" AYYAPPANUM KOSHIYUM " malayalam full Movie
I feel like whn jaby sees some really gud indian flim he gets immediately uncomfortable and instantly starts comparing to hollywood like we indians always gets inspire from english..
Or maybe he is just trying to relate the stuff that he sees to what he grew up with… dont have to be negative all the time dude
@@shawnjames3242 i'm not being negative bro... i too love jaby's work... this is something i felt for a long time.. he has to just realise everything is not about hollywood. He's my online pal just like he says.
@@muddyboy4513 hmm true. i have definitely seen that cake cutting shot in other movies more than once
22:44 Achara looks 😂😂😂
PREMAM = "Pray + mum" --- That's How You Pronounce That Movie Name... The Spelling Of That Movie Name Is Like This "PREMAM".... But, The Pronunciation Of That Will Sound Like This " Praymum "... Actually He Was 21 At The Time He Tries Her...
This is one of my favorite Romance/drama/comedy of all time. The director was heavily influenced by Goutham menon's Vaaranam Aayiram and VTV, my other two favorite romance/dramas
Not a great fan of the story, but I really appreciate the way it is shot and worked out.
The making of this movie is what it makes the best
Malayalam movies are awesome... Currently best in Indian movie scenario 👍
Yes
22:44 the moment jaby choose death hahah
The whole camera motion is based on the movements of butterflies....random and unpredictable.
being arogant and mysogenist is heroics in indian cinemas
Yay for PATRIARCHY!
...btw the cokehead is the director..he found Sai Pallavi..her debut movie.....Shambu the friend is the music director..... All are friends....
In what world is he 19 ? We are almost 18 when we Are done with high schools ? He is in college and he is a senior . So , maybe 21 or 22 and she is a guest lecturer , young , probably 25 or 26 .
There should be a sai pallavi's pov, where she just chickened out and dumped him by saying, she lost her memory 😄
There was a time I really wanted Jaby to react to PREMAM, after years it happened. Thank you Jaby!
There is always a teacher like Vimal Sir in every college.
Jaby and Archana knows that Malar and George speaks different languages right?
22:38 goddaaam jaby what a Burnnnn🤣🔥🔥🔥
Did you guys mean to upload the entire video today or was it supposed to be cut into 2 separate videos?
Watch Lucifer (Malayalam movie not the series). That's a movie an international audience can connect to well because of its making and subtitles. It's also the biggest blockbuster in Malayalam industry till date and the second installment to that movie is in its production stage.
It's available on prime.
React to "om Shanti Oshana"
12:40 Yes, she did get married to her cousin. Strangely in some parts of India that is allowed and does happen, albeit very rare now. Only a particular type of cousin though - If you are a guy, Mum's brother's daughter and if you are a girl, Dad's sister's son.
Hey Jaby, thanks for upload this watch along. It's always a treat to watch you and Achara react. But it seems like both of you have some underlying issues. I hope it gets resolved. I would love to see the chemistry again between both of you.
She didn't regained her memory coz she ain't lose it
That guy beaten by the crew of nivin Pauly.. He is the director of this movie..
I was literally waiting for the part 2 ❤️
