  • Looking for the ultimate portable antenna ground mount solution? Whether you're using a K8MRD POTA 20 or the HRD LD6, I've got you covered with this easy Ground Mast Mount Solution.
    ____________________________________________
    Notes from AFTER recording:
    1. Schedule 40 PVC. If you have a K8MRD POTA 20, the PVC you want is 1/2 inch Schedule 40. If you are using a HRD LD6, the PVC you want is 3/4 inch.
    2. 3 sections on the PVC, spaced evenly, allows for better stress distribution. putting too much pressure on ONE point WILL break things easier. It's like pressure / counter pressure on a wrist... SNAP. I demonstrate that here: • Portable Carbon Fiber ...

    4. Picnic table mount was done utilizing a Super Clamp - • Super Clamp For Ham Ra...
    5. I ended up making multiple revisions of this, as you may be able to see in the video. The black version is Polycarbonate and I love it. Although, when Poly carbonate fails, doesn't just crack, it fails. For this, I have been testing ASA filament, which seems to work fine. ASA filament is strong, UV protected (for the most part) and has been holding up well. Prototypes I have sent out are included with M10 threaded inserts (metal) into the plastic. I did this for more strength where the tent spike meets the mast holder. Speaking of tent spikes: i tried many different sizes, These JPC12 like spikes are 9.5 inches, and they work relatively well. Smaller spikes do not. PROBLEM: They JPC 12 spikes are aluminum, and the tip may dent or flatten easily
    6. I talk about durability and torture tests. I have more testing to do and sent a few of these prototypes out to others for testing. I will sell these shortly after enough testing is concluded. I would still recommend using the least amount of force necessary to accomplish the task (getting it in the ground) Until they go for sale, if you want to make your own for personal use, feel free (Thingiverse and Printables files linked below for both the POTA 20 and LD6): This is also a great time for me to find a good source on metal M10 threaded inserts.
    7. I spoke about Epoxy, give it a shot if you want. I like Super Glue..
    8. The cool thing about the threaded spike is it can disassemble and fit right into my Gigaparts Explorer like backpack, right next to my mast. - • Ham Radio Tactical Bac...
    9. Many people have asked for a complete rundown of my portable setup. I hear you and will do so as soon as I can. I am working on testing wires on the mast, then my commander video, which I wanted done 4 months ago. After that, I will go through my gear, setup, and takedown.
    10. I forgot...I also sent one of these to Mike (K8MRD) for his Pota20. I will be excited to hear his feedback (good or bad).

@@HAMRADIODUDE I was going to make this same suggestion. My local library has a new-ish tech center with different 3D printers (different materials). The only fee is for materials consumed.

Excellent! Store should be open in a few days, I just need to finish the current orders. I am glad you enjoyed this mount, it's pretty rugged so far!

That’s a cool solution for a ground mount. At the beach I use an umbrella ground mount and a 1” pvc pipe with my DX Commander 7m pole. What brand of 3D printer to you use? The printed parts look really good.

      Hey, Thanks!
I love when people ask about my printers. This winter, I may try to make a few episodes about them. In this episode, I didn't really discuss all the different iterations I did and printed:
I printed Polycarbonate and ASA with my Bambu labs (Black and orange tips) X1C. I need to tune the X1C for the polycarbonate, but overall they turn out great. This is also my main printer for printing things people purchase online. The reasoning is, it has decent speeds and is fairly reliable. The pre made profiles, typically just work.
For the blue ASA (that I am beating up with the mallet), I used my Creality K1. It's an inexpensive CoreXY printer, that once the settings were dialed in (it took a lot of time), Prints GREAT. I don't use this for my primary printer, because I still have some trust issues with it.
If you noticed a clear or off white cap, that would have been done with Nylon 230 (it was a BAD choice for this print). Nylon 230 is strong and flexible. I print those with my Ender 3 (modified with a sprite 3 extruder for direct drive, linear rails, Auto bed leveling, SKR 3, Dual Z, and Sonic Pad). The Ender 3 has AMAZING print quality, but it is slow. It still has use though.
      Have a good one!

I don’t understand why there are so many ground-mount antenna videos out there. I clamped a mirror mount to an old photo light stand. I screwed in a 17’ whip that I extend to the proper length for the band I’m using. I have a couple lengths of wire that I attached alligator clips to each end. One end clips to the mount and other end to a 4’ plastic fence post with a spike on the end. The whole apparatus is about 5’ off the ground.
I worked all states, all Canadian provinces and 54 countries in 10 days on FT8.
It takes 5 minutes to set up and take down.

Thanks for the detailed description of the mount. I made one with a camera tripod and made a video in the past (ua-cam.com/video/6lMp8ChBURc/v-deo.html for anyone interested).
As for why I have so many ground-mount antenna videos (and picnic bench and other mounting solutions), I sort of hit on it in the video. The last video I made about several ground mount videos and the video short teasers, they both give a look into how I come up with ideas.
This spike was the evolution (for me) of many different spike solutions over the years (since 2021)... Allowing people to see my method of thinking, building, and applying, will allow them to (hopefully) be better hams and/or engineers. I am not saying I am an engineer.
But also, over the past 5 years, I have heard so many people upset that they buy a product and there was no support, no accessories.... essentially, no solutions. So here I am providing solutions, so that when the viewers purchase the product, they will have a library of ideas, based on my previous videos.
Why not include K8MRD's mast in the works while I am doing mine?
So that was my thought on it.

"Ah, an easy means of doing this, just what I need!"
Sees that it requires a 3D printer.
    "Oh. Never mind." 🙂

Plenty of resources out there to have things printed, maybe there is someone in a club with one, maybe a local library will do free prints (that happens near me), maybe I'll put some up so others may build. And if non of those work, maybe this would give you ideas based upon my design
