  • After using the Tivdio V-115 for several months and taking it on more trips, Paul updates his review. It turns out while it's still a good little radio, it's fringe reception isn't as good as a similar analog radio.
Next up, Paul will try out and review the Kaito KA29 radio, which has a similar feature set, including the ability to record, but may have better reception.

Hi from Scotland. Thank you for your review of the V-115. While it is good value for money as a standard travel portable, it is certainly not a Dx machine. Your review sums up its main faults, for me, the most annoying is the bleed over from AM stations on SW. I am seriously considering a KA29 or DE29. 73s Jim

I bought the TIVIDIO after seeing your review.decent little radio and have actually on several occasions was able to get some DX on the AM band including WCBS.My current location is Lexington,KY and reception can be spotty at times especially in the current home we live in.

It isn't as sensitive because it's a compact $17 radio! It also includes a battery, MP3 player, and recorder for the price. If it performed as well as the $50 or $150 radios, you wouldn't need those more expensive radios. For what it costs, I am still impressed.

Radio Survivor - Thanks for the review. I like all of the features of V115 (and its various clones) and there is no knocking the price, but I would happily pay more if the quality was better. Such is the nature of a lot of Chinese products, great features, but quality matches price. I am resigned to having MacGyver a antenna if I am in a remote location.

I have that radio, and I absolutely adore it. However, you're right--it's not for DX-ing much: although it does pick up SW signals pretty good, it's prone to interference from strong AM stations. That's why I only do DX-ing near the seashore (because our SW broadcasts come from China--it's the nearest; the farthest it got is, I think, Okinawa, Japan) and during Black Saturday, a holiday when the AM stations are signed off. Also, despite the warbling noise it gets when listening to AM broadcasts, it's still okay for my tastes. I may have given my V-115 to my mother (she likes its portability), but I plan to get another one for myself!

I use a clip lead to make that antenna longer roughly 40 inches total. I agree that was an oversight by the manufacturer.

I use mine with a crocodile clip and 10 metres of wire. Definite improvement but not really practical. Nice video.

The Tivdio V-115 is now (Sept 2020) known as the Retekess V-115.

I wonder if the radio can be programmed like a VCR to record a program.

It has no clock. It does have a sleep timer (so it seems to understand minutes), so you could start recording (perhaps after setting the sleep timer) and record a program. Move resulting MP3 to computer and edit that (remove commercials, etc.). The sleep timer has to be set every time one wishes to use it; radio does not remember that setting.

My V-115 after 9 months went. If I type the frequency it doesn't go & aborts. I am close to a commercial FM transmitter & it bleeds over badly on Shortwave. AM is fine & FM I can't hear all my local stations just some. Now that Trump put the tariffs on Chinese junk that $14 radio will cost you 3x the price.
