Byron Scott, prettiest jump shot to ever play the game. As a child i remember trying to mimic his form. I didn't care whether it went in or not, as long as it looked good trying :)
Nzinn73 Scott had a very nice shot, but I would mention Klay Thompson, Ray Allen, Scott Wedman. Mark Price had a nice looking shot, Isiah Thomas too, imo.But Byron was nice, absolutely,as a Celtics fan, we respected what he could do. Had some hops, too, great defensive backcourt with Cooper. Showtime Lakers had great teams.
Still remember to this day watching this game live. I was a huge Lakers fan in the 80's, and Byron Scott was my favorite player. I think I might even still have this game on a VHS tape somewhere! If I remember right, I believe that this remained Scott's career high until he retired. Nothing will ever beat that Lakers/Celtics rivalry. 👍
This was the game that knocked that Celtic ghost off Byron Scott’s shoulder. From this moment on he came up big in the clutch all the way through the mid 90s as a Pacer.
Unfortanetly for Boston, they couldn't keep with LA speed in the 4th quarter. That was what happened in game 4 of the 1987 Finals. In Boston, during the regular season, the Lakers used the same strategy on the 4th quarter to blow past the slower Celts. Riley knew, keep the ball far from Bird's hands, make him work hard to get to the ball and run the slow Celts out of the court.
One thing about this game was that it was played the same day as the 1988 Daytona 500 (and followed it on CBS, as was usually the case back then), and some of that race's craziness even caught up to this game at the beginning, as there was a blackout in the game's opening stages, and the game was continued as they were getting the lights back on. In fact, that blackout was shown in the latter moments of the Daytona 500, just before the race went green for the last time with 11 laps remaining.
I really miss the fans on the stadiums, the fans were into the game cheering, screaming and chanting, you feel the whole stadium going crazy, now is different, everyone is on the phones, no one cheers, alot of people go and don't even pay attention to the game. Let's bring back our fans and support our teams like before, greetings from Queens, New York ✌️
I watched this game live and will always remember that third quarter when Boston kicked ass ( Kevin McHale in particular ). Unfortunately they gave it back in the fourth quarter.
I was at that game. You're right about the 3rd quarter. Boston did have a kick ass quarter. But gave it back in the fourth quarter? What I remember about that 4th quarter was the Lakers TOOK that quarter from Boston by playing defense and no one could stop Byron Scott in that quarter.
@@jessecalloway4145 Yes there's definite truth to that but in Boston's defense it's worth noting that Parish was out and during this time period Boston had nothing in their second unit while the Lakers on the other hand were deeper and faster. The Lakers had guys like Michael Cooper and Mychal Thompson ( acquired from Portland in '87 to be their McHale stopper ) checking in while Boston had Fred Roberts, Mark Acres, Brad Lohaus, and a washed up Artis Gilmore coming off the bench.
The Los Angeles Lakers young and last man to be recruited by the team to be involved to be an NBA TEAM world champion again. That was Byron Scott in the late 1980,s
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I HATE the Celtics and Lakers! But, that's because they KILLED the Blazers. Larry Bird KILLED the Blazers. Byron Scott single-handedly kept the Blazers from winning a championship in 1990-91. I wonder why the Blazers never tried to trade for him, or sign him, if even to keep him from KILLING them again. Of course, the Blazers PASSED on drafting Larry Bird, and took Mychal Thompson instead.
1988 was Larry Bird's best individual season, and it went to waste! After the '87 season ended, Bird committed himself to doing cardio regularly, and boy did it show in his lean look, low body-fat %, and his eventual results. Larry averaged 29.9pts 9.3rebs 6.1ast; he was 91.6% from the line, 41.4% on 3's, and had a career best fg% of 52.7! But, unfortunately, Boston's bench was pathetic! They still made the ECF for the 5th straight year, taking the Pistons to 6 games, but the starters played way too many minutes all year long, and the bill came due in the playoffs. Larry played with pain in his feet all through the playoffs. Even with the series tied 2-2, and Gm.#5 in Boston, and the Celtics having a 16pt. lead in the 3rd quarter, the bottom fell-out against Detroit, and the great run of this starting 5 was over! Detroit won Gm.#5, and closed it out in Detroit a couple days later. It would be Larry's last MVP-type year, where he finished 2nd in voting behind MJ, 665 - 527, with Larry receiving 16 1st place votes! It would also be the last year that the starting 5 of Ainge, DJ, Parish, McHale, & Bird would be together a full year! Ainge was traded in '89, and Larry played only 6 games due to bone-spurs that he had to have surgically removed. The Celtics still made the playoffs as the #8 seed at 42-40, losing to #1 Detroit again.
Yeah I heard him say that and even though I love Larry Bird, he's full of shit when it comes to retiring after the 87-88 season. It's a flat out bullshit lie and he knows it. Disappointing he continues the lie. It's something I'd more expect from Magic or Jordan.
I agree, I think it's a lie, or maybe retroactive wishful thinking on Bird's part. If anything, Len Bias would have rejuvenated Bird, and given the Celtics the firepower to bang with the Pistons and Lakers into the early 90s. No way Bird would retire if he thought he had a chance to win a championship.
cant believe the Celtics had scrubs like fred Roberts, dirk minnifield , mark acres on their 1988 team are you F in kidding me ?they couldn't play in the NBA today . no wonder the Celtics couldn't get back to the finals after 87 with scrubs like these guys no kidding Lol !
I dont disagree with you, but the Celtics could afford to have had a bench full of Kwame Browns, if that meant having a healthy franchise player like Len Bias was to be when Red drafted him in 86. Those scrubs should tell you the greatness they saw in Len Bias, that no load was too big for a guy like that. They traded to get the 2nd overall pick to get that guy just after winning the 86 title! Stupid cocaine OD had to kill him hours after that draft
Los Lakers, more than anyone, benefited from the loss of Bias. Had he lived, Boston would have 21 NBA titles right now and not have to take credit for winning titles in a different city like some other shithead franchise.

totally agree. Loved BS until he became a coach for the LAL and let Kobe did anything he wanted.

BYRON SCOTT DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN ALL STAR IN 1988🏀⛹🏿♂️💯👍🏿
The NBA is Fantastic.
Was back then.
Byron Scott was THE MAN on that Sunday afternoon
The man....period!

Great watch! As a kid, I vividly remember watching the Daytona 500 then the Lakers vs Celtics game that always seemed to follow in the late 1980s.
When the NBA was exciting and had actual rivalries and the players actually cared about their team vs theirself first! Two incredibly unselfish TEAMS
Exactly, today, Celtics/Lakers, nothing, no rivalry, boring basketball, WTH happened?
2:51 is one of my favorite memories from this epic rivalry.
mine too

This game has a playoff feel.
Thank you! I miss this stuff

1:04. Larry The Legend points to the spot where he'll hit a jumper in James Worthy's face, then does it. LOL!!
Still lost the game though

Art Boston Teams cannot kick ass for 12 minutes and not do anything else for 36 minutes and expect to win.

Number 53 Celtics: Is that Artis Gilmore?
yes
wow...great match...lakers won 64-44 in the half time and celtics with a 36-12 in the 3rd period won 80-76....

Full game , please!!!
Byron Scott was the leading scorer in the regular season during the 1987=88 NBA season
No he was not the leading scorer in the NBA that year.
aram hamparian I think he meant leading scorer for the Lakers.
Yeah we all know who that was, MJ, Michael "Air" Jordan.
1st basketball game I ever saw, I remember this was overlapping w/ the Daytona 500
Anyone know if the whole game can be watched anywhere?
can some one....ANYONE please upload this entire game!
Byron and Karl

Scott the most underrated player possibly ever.Knew Worthy, Kareem n Magic would get theirs but Scott was the one I worried about the most
watch this series and you will have to argue this Laker team being #1 in NBA history.
Held Byron to 8 for 8
9for9
Artis Gilmore
Held on Valentine’s Day
Dick Stockton nearly lost his shit as the Celtics made their comeback in the 3rd. He was blatantly in their favor.
McHale tried to save the Celtics, but Bird shot poorly and it was the difference in the game.

Celtics imploded in the 4th. Looks like not having Chief caught up to them. But KC was too dumb to bring along a player like Reggie Lewis sooner.
Agree ,Bird even said in an interview with bill Simmons that if Len bias had played with celtics he would of retired after the 87 or 88 seasons
