  • Decades ago it was a spiritual place for Native Americans. Today it is often treated like a bathtub by tourists. John hits the backroads to tell the sad story of the Travertine Hot Springs.

Horseshit. Non native desecration because of trash? Ever been to a reservation? My point is, my family and I (my kids’ mom who is not Mono but indigenous nonetheless) have been enjoying this sacred place for decades. Most people who go there are respectful. And yes! People use it as a bath tub in that they relax in the medicinal hot waters...but like most people, they don’t trash their bathtub. This place is awesome! But the video above does not send a message of preservation for for responsible use. It more insinuates the place should be closed off from the general public. .

Years ago I read a contemporary account I believe written by a U.S. Army Officer or government official in the mid- to late-1800's about how when the nomadic Native American tribes moved on from their encampments, it was because they had basically cleared out all the game and stripped the area of edible plant life. When they left, it was described as a wasteland littered with everything from animal bones to piles of human waste.
We have this modern notion that Native Americans somehow were totally non-disruptive to their environments and living in perfect balance with the land. This is reinforced by media such as this where you have soul-stirring flute music playing over a sternly handsome Native American soberly detailing how his people have been sidelined. Yet contemporary Native Americans on reservations clearly do not respect their environments and do not live in perfect balance with the land. Yes, I am regularly shocked by the disregard some people have for nature, but they are in the minority.

Spot on. And in some ancient prophecies, it is said the natives would turn away from the God of this land and as a result would be displaced from the land.

They are native to Asia. The original people of this land was enslaved and given a false identity. A lot of so called natives perpetrate as being indigenous to this land.

This is not the only place that’s sacred to the tribals, but every square inch of what we call the United States now is sacred to the tribal people therefore not just this place but every square inch should be respected.

Negative spin? It's called reality. People don't respect nature like they should.
