I worked and slept in igloos in temperatures at least as low as -30, probably lower, and in no fucking way does "the cold air around people bla bla" Not even close. Matter of fact when you have to go for a piss in the night and you leave your igloo you don´t even bother puttin all your shit back on. You just throw on some gore tex outer shell and head out, piss, and head back in. Why? Because you don´t lose that much temp to air. Air is shit at conducting temp. edit: To be fair i do not know if you are talking about naked people. But even then i doubt they´d flash freeze in any set of circumstances. You want to flash freeze something, you need a good conductor to get the heat out of it. Solid metal for instance.

I mean not really though, the reason is that the arctic is rich in coal so when their survival literally depends on coal heading there is the obvious best option. IRL there are some mines in the arctic but it usually isn't economical because coal is so cheap and the cold makes it harder to extract plus it's further away from society. But if the entire world is turning to ice and you're packing up and starting anew somewhere else that doesn't matter anymore and what is really good is the plentiful coal supply.
It's because the giant heat generator machines were aready there because a science team went there before when it wasn't as cold to figure out the cause. It was too cold to build a new giant heat generator at their old location.
Late to the party but bought this game yesterday. Heard it was difficult. Played a new home and survived on my fist play through with 450 souls. Didn’t read anything online except how to place steel mines as I couldn’t work it out. Came to your video and my feeling is that you are too good for this game/ scenario now. I was down to be my last 50 food by the end, was having to execute people to keep control and reduce food consumption. My coal by the end was completely gone and the generator was shutting down. Wish I could do UA-cam videos as I was living life right on the edge the entire time. You done your best to make it dramatic at the end but in reality you could have went another week of the storm at least. People…if your new to this game I’d applaud you if you survive without prep work like build orders etc and on your first play through. I didn’t even know the storm was the end. Had plans all set to rebuild my city and stabilise it before it jumped to the cut scene and ended…brilliant game with so much suspense!
I'm still not sure which video of Frostpunk I found on your channel when I originally subscribed (but the great YT Algorithm brought me to one of your first Frostpunk videos), but I just sat down this morning to watch this video specifically (likely a re-watch). The opening and final approaching storm always gives me chills, and watching you proverbially brace for the storm throughout the city's progression, and your genuine responses to what's happening makes it all the more a unique experience. I'll likely be spending another several hours today, and throughout the week ahead, re-watching the Frostpunk playlist of yours. Thank you for sharing these plays of the game. They're truly enjoyable to sit down for a while and enjoy both your content, and the music and gameplay.

Absolutly love watching you play this game. Never heard of it before. Awesome combo of clutch / hectic situations together with the constant new story unlocked with each event.
Rewatching this reminded me of an interesting fact I learned about emperor penguins. During blizzards the penguins from these giant groups to stay warm, and constantly rotate, spending shifts on the edge and the inside. For years scientists thought that the circulation of penguins was so that penguins on the outside would have a chance to warm up on the inside, but the opposite is true. The penguins actually get too damn hot and have to go stand at the edge of the huddle to cool off. That's what jake's city is like, the people standing outside in the snow are probably sweating buckets from their houses and workplaces being too cozy.
@@DDRJake makes sense!!! I was building a lot of steam hubs knowing that the heat increases! Once I failed the "maintain homes at liveable condition" the game is just over for me. So do I have to upgrade the generator/heat levels at the workshop?
@@melman9020 If you want higher temperatures, you'll need heat zones and heaters, and you'll need to research increased generator power. some research also increases the insulation of certain buildings.
I focused on coal thumpers instead of coal mines, then used the excess steam cores to build automatons to run the coal thumpers. With all the excess manpower I manned them in the hunters' hangars, wall drills, and steelworks and I had like 30k coal and almost 3k of all resources by the time the storm set in. Automating is definitely the way to go. Not to mention putting an automaton in a workshop helped a lot with my research speed.
I've done the calculations and an advanced coal main is better than automatons up until automatons are at 95% efficiency, (which requires automaton integration 3 and the automaton project) and at that point you can still use either shrines or agitators to increase efficacy (which don't work on automatons) along with the coal mining and rationalization tech, which brings up the total extra efficacy to 40%, where with coal thumpers you can only bring it up by 15%, simply put coal mines are better than automaton coal thumpers and use the same amount of steam cores.
Of all the time I've played this game, I've just noticed that the shadows move right to left, meaning that either the sun is moving west to east, or this generator is in the southern hemisphere....
@@DDRJake I know which direction is away from the equator because the shadows point away from the sun. With one's back to the sun, the shadows are moving from right to left in the game (east to west in southern hemisphere, west to east in northern hemisphere). If the generator is in Scotland as is claimed, the planet is spinning backwards.
watching this after your extreme endless run seems like a such a easy mode you get so many workes right away. This is a not game for me but i definitely enjoy watching it so many hours its better then some serie or movies. -150C thats unreal you cant even breath in that cold oxygen might not freez but im sure the liquids in your body will freez in seconds after breathing this :D The ending was great did you made those lines or the game did it after your choices ?

Loved the video but the mispronunciation of the word automaton was very distracting. Several times people tried to bring this to Jake's attention through the chat but were simply ignored. The word automaton and automation are two entirely different words. Automatons are popular and well known in steam punk and scifi genres, like robots but less advanced. Automation describes the use of largely automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process. The word automaton is pronounced "aa·taa·muh·taan". Otherwise solid gameplay. I gave up after twenty failed attempts at playing this scenario and found this video after a quick google search. Solid content!

Sadly Survival mode doesn't change the difficulty, it just removes the pause button as far as I'm aware.
As long as the generator and steam hubs are on, they won't have snow near them. That means that the ground temp is at least 0C.
