  • We need Afrofuturism; not as a box to put people in, but as a lens with which to change the way we imagine and actualize an inclusive future. A future where black people are in control of their own destinies.
    #DUST #scifi #shortfilm
    More About Afrofuturism:
Welcome to the first video in our 5 part original series Afrofuturism: Ep 1 Sun Ra.
Afrofuturism is not a sub-genre. For some, like Sun Ra, Afrofuturism (though the term was not coined until after Sun Ra passed away) is a form of escapism; a reprieve from violent systems of segregation and white supremacy. For others, Afrofuturism is a celebration of black innovation; filmmaker and author Ytasha Womack describes Afrofuturism as, “The intersection between black culture, technology, liberation, and the imagination, with some mysticism thrown in, too.” For some it is highly spiritual. Above all else, it is an ambitious vision of the future and mankind's place in it that is continually informed by black culture and history.
What kind of message is sent when mass audiences are presented with visions of the future that do not include people of color? Since Hollywood has historically excluded black characters from leading roles in science fiction films, black people have had to envision and ultimately create space for themselves above and beyond the Earth's atmosphere. In DUST’s original series, we celebrate a handful of those people, and encourage you to dive deeper into the Afrofuture.
We present to you the stories of:
    - Sun Ra: Considered the forefather of Afrofuturism.
    - Uhura: One of the lieutenants on Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise. Portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the original series, she counted Martin Luther King as one of her biggest fans.
    - George Clinton: Whose brand of funk was filled with cosmic imagery.
    - Jimi Hendrix: Who often imagined himself as an alien.
    - Missy Elliott: Who popularized the pairing of science-fiction and hip-hop.

Interesting, but I'm not sure the wording for this was right and it left me confused. It came off as if this person was some mystical being from another world with visions of the future rather than just an eccentric entertainer who promoted the idea of of the black community of going into the stars

so in ur rather small minds. both of those notions could not be true? interesting. meanwhile, both were indeed true. he was a mystical otherworldly being. and he was a eccentric entertainer promoting alternative perspective and view for people of african descent. u confused urself.

Nice, its rare to see a scifi episodic series from a black perspective. What's even more rare is that it had no relation to whites, other than one scene from the Jetsons. I thought it was very interesting and quite risque. I'll be be on the look out for the other four episodes.

If you were, you’d have some status among the nations of the world. So we’re both myths. I do not come to you as a reality; I come to you as the myth, because that’s what black people are. Myths. I came from a dream that the black man dreamed a long time ago. I’m actually a presence sent to you by your ancestors.” ~ Sun Ra "Space is the Place"

Alright, I have read a good bit about Sun Ra and consider myself a rather big fan. For a 2 and a half minute video I applaud the effort of unpacking the seriously complicated topic of afrofuturism as well as this man's story. The bit about Jupiter, however, I must comment on. He always swore up and down he was from Saturn, even naming his record label after it. For the commenters implying this is somehow racist against all "non-blacks" and various other nasty remarks, you clearly have missed the point and are doing nothing more than projecting your own insecurities onto this short animated video about a black musician. Seriously? Get a grip. The points made about Star Trek and Star Wars are true. You going to argue that?

A short video, only two minutes and forty seconds in length, is, somehow, the greatest threat on Earth to the Dust sci-fi UA-cam channel?? 🤣🤣🤣 Not once did the narrator utter an unkind word about any race, but you still feel threatened. Not once did the narrator suggest any vio|ent action, but you still feel threatened. Since you feel threatened by anything regarding people of color, you should applaud this video for suggesting that all b|ack people should leave Earth entirely. You could even start a movement for people such as yourself. Your group's t-shirts could have this message printed on them: “Hey, b|ack people, GET OFF MY PLANET!” 🤣😂😁 Take it a step further by declaring this beautiful blue Earth belongs only to people with beautiful blue eyes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, sure... everyone with any other eye color should leave the planet immediately! 😂 You know what you'd be left with? Your horrible and murderous selves. It's Wednesday, April 20, 2022, and the war on Ukraine is not being waged by Africa, not China, not India, not South America, but by a country with a man whose leader has blue eyes, Russia. The world is not worried if a dark-skinned, brown-eyed man will start a nuclear war. That possibility is solely in the hands of blue-eyed man, so take a few moments to contemplate who your REAL enemy is, and will always be, because the threat IS NOT the maker of this video.
