    Very good video TheDarthDesigner but there is a mistake with the cost of the F100 Álvaro de Bazán class. The first four costed 430 million € (465,33 million $) and the F105 Cristobal Colon (the last one) costed 822,99 million € (890,61 million $). Not to mention that although the Álvaro de Bazán class are officially frigates for their mission and design are AWD (air warfare destroyers).

      soviet and russian ships always have way to much weapons stuffed into them with most of them not working and the rest being more of a liability than anything else. like with tanks, ships should be a good balance of fire power, protection, mobility and modern sensor systems. not just a smal boat packed to the max with large rockets.

    Most modern ships classification of countries is more complicated (´・_・`)...
    Some EU countries use frigates as their main force, just like destroyers.
    I think the position of frigates in naval ships :
    "The cost and tonnage should not exceed the Destroyer.
    (Less than 5,000 tons)
    "Acts as a guard and air defense and anti-submarine support (Ocean Fleet)
    "Independently nearshore operations (1000 to 1200 nm)

      the name Destroyer comes from shortening the actual name which is torpedoboat-destroyer. meaning a vessel that was developed during the age of battleships to preotect the battleship formations from small torpedo boats which where using swarm tactic to attack. destroyer as a name therefore doesn't have anything to do with size nor is it a menaingfull name for todays situations and tactics. frigate on the other hand has been a name for a mid sized war ship since the age of sails. I have no idea why americans think that destroyers are somehow suppoesedto be larger than frigates? size doesn't come into the naming convention at all. the next lager vessel than a frigate would be a cruiser which name comes from a ship crusing through the 7 seas far away from home port which requires a larger vessel.

      IMHO The French Frigate🇫🇷 it must always be together with the Italian Frigate🇮🇹 in the videos where the Frigates are compared.
      🟥The 2 FREMMs have pros and cons.
      1) 🇫🇷The French MTU engine(+27 knots) was designed to escort the CV CdG, thus reaching speeds of 27 knots.
      🇮🇹The Isotta-Fraschini engine favors a speed of +30 knots because it has to escort the Cavour traveling at 29 knots.
      2) The French Fremm🇫🇷 is more Stealth and with deep strike capability with MdCN(1000km) missiles, CAPTAS-4 for all 2 Versions(AAW and ASW) but has a vulnerable M-PESA 3D Radar, the Herakles, no place for special Ops units and no 127mm for close surface battles.
      -The Italian Fremm🇮🇹 has a M-AESA 3D Radar, Kronos Grand Naval(MFRA), 127mm(120km of range) for close Naval Battles, 200 place for special force units, MILAS torpedo but has a limited deep strike/coastal bombing capability with the 76mm Strales/Davide(only 40km), less stealth design and CAPTAS-4 only for FREMM in ASW configuration.

    There are some ships that blur the line between destroyer and frigates. Take for eg Shivalik class of India . It has a displacement of about 6800 tons equivalent to a destroyer . But due to it's less armaments it is considered as a frigate.Basically a heavy frigate or light destroyer.

    • @DarthDesigner
      @DarthDesigner  4 роки тому

      Completely right, is quite difficult in the modern era to perfectly find the right role of a ship. It's the same with some destroyers very close to cruisers

    • @Rtgv123
      @Rtgv123 4 роки тому

      @@DarthDesigner There's another. Back in WW1 and WW2 era Carriers we're escorted by Battleship because they posses superior firepower. Nowadays destroyer too posses firepower equivalent to a WW2 battleship. Some destroyer posses nuke cruise missile ( Kolkata class , don't know any other ). In other words , a destroyer can fulfill a role of any ship even Aircraft carrier ( Jsmdf Kaga ).

    I'd think the zeven provinciën is the best of the three air defence frigates in this video (meaning huitfeldt and f125, they are basically the same platform with some variations). But what puts the zeven provinciën ahead of all these other ship, are it's radars. The new radars, the SMART-L EWC increases the range from 400km to 2000km. This makes it the only naval ship that's truly able to detect and track ballistic missiles, making it ready for a ballistic missile defence role. This makes the zeven provinciën a superior air defence frigate, and that's why it's superior to the huitfeldt for example. It doesn't really change anything to the top 2, because those are not really air defence ships. So I'd say the zeven provinciën should probably be 3rd place, being the best frigate from the three 'brothers' (zeven prov., sachsen and huitfeldt) within their role.

    • @bartdekoning6047

      Also having 8 more VLS in the normal configuration gives it a huge edge over the other two, and it even has room for 8 more VLS, bringing the total to 48, thus having 50% more VLS than the other two ships. This means it can easily add 8 SM-3's in the VLS without losing space, which will make it a true BMD frigate/destroyer.

    I think FREMM shouldn’t be in 1st place: they are exceptional ships and surely the most advanced frigates in the world... but the Italian FREMMs only have 16 VLS cells for Aster missiles (very light armament for a 7000 ton frigate), while the French FREMM have double the VLS cells but with inferior radar system (and without a backup radar!).
    At the moment, the best frigate overall is likely the Iver Huitfeld... really good design, advanced and modular.
    Admiral Gorshkov has impressive firepower but inferior systems compared to western ships.
    The Baden-Wurttemberg class shouldn’t even be on the list: they are basically upsized offshore patrol vessels designed only for anti-piracy duties and land-attack, without any tangible anti-air capability.

    • @clitoralrosary9474
      @clitoralrosary9474 4 роки тому

      With respect the 16 cells does not do justice to the ships air defense capabilities. The Bergamini class is the only ship in the world armed with advanced Aster 30 long range anti-air missiles and the vessels themselves can synchronize with the PAAMS radar/tracking system from Italian navy destroyers in order to track all objects in an 800 km circle. Lastly, the Bergamini class has 32 cells. But the latter 16 are reserved and only used if absolutely necessary, like in wartime for example.

    • @pincopallino6765
      @pincopallino6765 4 роки тому

      Prince Stingy No, both Bergamini (general purpose variant) and Fasan (ASW variant) only have 16-cells; the other 16-cells are only “fitted for but not with), meaning that there’s theoretically enough space to install them but they are not installed... to be equipped, the ships would require an upgrade and modifications in drydock, and obviously the VLS itself and the missiles for the extra cells would also need to be procured. The Bergamini general-purpose version currently uses the space reserved for the extra cells as accomodation for a detachment of San Marco Regiment soldiers (basically the Italian Marines); this role might be taken up by the PPAs frigates currently under construction, freeing up the space for the 16 extra VLS... but the Italian Navy was running out of budget even before the coronavirus economic crisis (the Navy managed to secure a lot of new ships being built, but with limited funds remaining for their weapons), so it’s unlikely the fitted for but not with weapons will ever be installed.

    • @clitoralrosary9474
      @clitoralrosary9474 4 роки тому

      @@pincopallino6765To elaborate, the FREMM of both variants are equipped with DAVIDE/STRALES Oto Melara 76mm gun which uses DART guided munitions in an 80-85 round magazine with reserve ammunition aboard. This allows the 76mm gun to engage aircraft and missiles with a range of up to 10 km, double the range of any CIWS. So in effect, it's equivalent to a short range missile system. My point is the lack of cells is actually an illegitimate criticism of the FREMM's anti-air capabilities. In reality unlike most major surface combatants, FREMM actually has multilayered air defence. Aster 30 (long range), Aster 15 (medium range), and DART (short range).

    • @pincopallino6765
      @pincopallino6765 4 роки тому

      Prince Stingy Strales is an effective CIWS system... but a maximum of 16 missiles means that the ship can’t properly survive an intense saturation attack or engage many targets during a prolonged deployment (can’t reload the cells at sea).
      Things may improve in the future once the CAMM-ER will enter service; on the frigates it will replace Aster-15, with 2 x CAMMs packed in a single cell (but this is still far from the “efficiency” of the Mark 41 VLS found on most other European frigates, that enables a mix of Standard missiles and quad-packed Evolved Sea Sparrows).

    • @pincopallino6765
      @pincopallino6765 4 роки тому

      leonardimas1 The 127/64 is not an effective anti-air weapon; its rate of fire is 32 rounds per minute and it is not equipped with guided anti-missile projectiles like the 76mm DART.
