While most super hero characters disappeared by 1950, you forgot about the Big Red Cheese, Captain Marvel. He continued from 1950 until 1953 when Fawcett gave in to DCs lawsuit and stopped publishing all its comic books. I think CM could have kept going because his simple stories appealed to young kids.
Marvel Comics also kept publishing Venus into the 1950s. Not sure if she was considered a super hero.
Marvel also tried to introduce a new character in the super hero field in 1950, Marvel Boy.
Also, there was the attempt by Marvel to revive its big three, Captain America, Human Torch and Sub Mariner in 1954, well before The Flash, but it failed.

One of the best videos you’ve done yet, Dante D. Filled with great knowledge and imparted with very entertaining and interesting commentary. The videos you present that deal with comics history are always so well done, compelling and thorough, yet never overstaying their welcome as many YT videos do. You should be a teacher, man. You have a gift for communication that inspires.

Thanks! I appreciate it! I trained as a teacher actually but now I am a Speech Pathologist in the hospital system. I use UA-cam as an outlet to lecture about my passion which is comics lol my dream is to teach a college level course on comics but don’t know if it’ll ever happen because I’m so ingrained in healthcare now. So UA-cam it will be lol

Integration, the Comics Code,Rock & Roll and I all got going at around the same time.In late 1954 I was a baby in Mom's arms. That fall the Comics Industry wrote the code to,"clean up,"comic books. Songs like Rock Around the Clock or Sh-Boom were on the charts then. Because of an early court decision, formerly segregated schools were just starting to admit blacks.

That severed head cover actually kinda threw me off. I actually do think it's in poor taste regardless of the blood.
I never knew about that. This makes more sense to me then the whole Batman and Robin are lovers line of reasoning 😂

My favorite 1950's comics are the westerns and "jungle" comics. I'm a huge fan of the old Tarzan and Nyoka books and the original Ghost Rider that appeared at Magazine Enterprises. And they're fairly affordable to collect. I've got a decent Golden Age collection, but these are the ones I treasure.

Oh yes!! I’ve heard about some of those... especially those original ghost rider ones.. hopefully I can pick some up one of these days! Thanks for watching and commenting!

First Turok probably more important than a few of the Flash books in terms of cover art, longevity, Valiant reboots and the subject of a once popular video game.

Showcase 4 is very undervalued compared to marvel silver age keys. This book is the most important book of the silverage and the 1950s. Only about 550 on the census. Vs thousands of AF15,FF1, etc.
very under appreciated book. Hopefully the flash movie will put this book on top where it belongs.

Hold it, ROY THOMAS' ALTER.EGO reminded us that BEFORE The Silver Age Flash made his appearance in 1956, MARVEL did indeed strike first in 1955 When they published issues of the revived CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE (Original) HUMAN TORCH and THE SUB-MARINER! I don't remember how many issues were published but I think they said Namor's had the most before they were cancelled, which may be why DC published NEW versions of older concepts! BTW Superman and Batman DID team up before, but on the SUPERMAN RADIO SHOW!

Many great picks Dante. A fun video. I like the history that you introduced beforehand. One book I would have included was by Sterling pub. Captain Flash #1. It's the first superhero comic in the Silver Age and the reason DC resurrected the Flash so as not tonlose trademark on the name. All Funnies Comics #16 (1945) the characters Batman and Superman appear together for the first time in a comic book story.

Nice video! I have several of 1950's DC comics... None on your list, none were too incredible expensive but none were cheap either. I'm 45...I have some crazy stuff lol.

My budget was more like the 2nd appearances of Mirror Master, The Top, Trickster and so on. Still...glad you mentioned the idealism portrayed of the idyllic 1950's. It's definitely "framed" as a picturesque USA.

Okay ..first let's get the pleasantries out of the way..Happy New Year , hope you and yours had a good Holiday Season and Welcome back . Now..onto the list .. Again , let me say how impressed I am by the knowledge you have of comics history for someone your age .Neck , someone of ANY age . And I know anyone can do research , but it's obvious that you've read the books on this list , as your list is nearly flawless as far as the books significance by placement .(How's that for some word salad?) As far as I can tell , there is only one mistake on your list as the first appearance of Sgt. Rock was in Our Army at War #81 , not 83 . Now if you don't mind I'd like to take a moment to cry in my beer from having had Adventure #247 , Action #252 , Flash #105 ,Showcase #22 and Our Army at War #81 in the collection I had to sell .I DID however keep Shock Suspenstories #22 (not sure what that says about me ) It's interesting that you brought up the numbering of the Flash ..Did you know that in those days that National was so nervous about new books selling that Justice League of America , Green Lantern , Hawkman and Teen Titans did not have the number one on the cover of their first issues hoping fans would just assume the titles had been around for a while already .
On to Dr. Wertham ..First let me say I agree with you that he was pretty much wrong across the board in his assessment of comic books and their effects on kids . But while it's easy to see that through a modern lens , I'm sure that in 1954 , it was far easier to come to his conclusions .If you'll recall , television was G rated , the Hayes Code for movies was still in full effect .There were no video games , so SOMETHING must have been turning our precious youth into juvenile delinquents (sarcasm) and I guess comics were an easy scapegoat . And as I've said before , without the Wertham trials and the Comics Code , we probably wouldn't have gotten the Superhero revival from DC , Joan doesn't tell Stan to do one more comic his way before he quits , We don't get Marvel etc..etc ..so Thanks Freddy !
Anyhoo ..I've prattled on long enough .Great video as always my friend and I look forward to your next one .

Happy New Year Eric! Thanks for tuning in as always, I really appreciate it. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the discussion in the video. Yes, I am so very fascinated in history.. I love it! Comic books for me are like opening a time capsule for me. I know I will never know what it was like in the 60s and 50s, but comic books and my grandfather’s stories are my connection to that past. I totally agree about Wertham.. without him, the superhero revival might not have happened. As the 50s was considered a “bland” era, I think people were looking for an enemy. I think we as human beings are not happy unless their is some “big baddie” that is responsible for everything. And as you said, with the Hayes code, G-rated TV and no video games.. comics were a great medium to pass blame on for what people believed was the root of societal decline. Always a pleasure chatting with you Eric!

Loved the list. One correction and a comment. Correction - Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman were three of only four DC Comics/National characters to be published continually from the Golden Age -Atomic Age - and Silver Age. The other? Aquaman in the pages of World's Finest and Adventure Comics. Comment - the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency initially contained four members; two from each party. Later, three Democrats and one Republican.

Wow! I actually didn’t know that Aquaman continued.. I was in Worlds Finest? I’ll have to check some of those out, thanks! Also, thanks for the cool tidbit about the Senate Subcommittee, I didn’t know that lol thanks for tuning in my friend! Cheers!

@@Dante19883 Clarification - not being political with the subcommittee comment just pointing out how the herd mentality was so prevalent! Thanks for keeping this a political free zone.

Number four, crime suspenstories. I'm sure that one can watch this entire fiasco with Gaines on youtube. Being his father pretty much created the comic book, he felt that it was on him, to defend the industry. He had taken I believe, dexdren to stay alert before these proceedings. In the middle of them, they wore off, and he was like a punching bag before the committee. He was zoned out. They tore him, ec, the industry to pieces It was Devastating for everyone in the comics biz. Every one in the biz, watching it live on the tube, groaned. It thus set the stage, for at least 45 years of the comics code. I'm sure what happened to him that day, haunted him to his dying day.
