There is a bit of survivor guilt I think he needed to work his way through. 3 of the songs appear in the others. *Freckled Angels, Suic!de, and For Joe* are the others. Then more recently he wrote a song for another friend lost to an accident close after losing Joe. It is called *Mackay*.

Hope sleeplessness is a random thing and nothing more :) You mentioned, not being able to say things on YT reminded me of when Ren's song Suic*de came out about his friend's passing when he was younger, reactors were trying to navigate that issue of not saying the word and how crazy it was to censor it since it could help people. 7:19 I have yet to hear an original song by Ren that doesn't lay out his personal feelings. He's so open and raw that you can't help being sucked in. But he couples that with an unrivaled talent for storytelling and musical talent.
I think as a fellow Gen Xer, ren’s music pulls us in because it reminds us of a time before auto tune where the performers were more authentic, and talented and really connected with the music they were creating. Ren is creative. Dynamic. The lyrics are clever and expressive. He’s Not afraid to try new things.

My grandson (9) can nail all of Ren's lyrics and tries to recreate the tracks on his keyboard and guitar. His little sisters for some reason need a little Chinchilla in there. The 6 year old granddaughter can replicate her sublimely

Sleep Token is a modern day band that is genre blending better than anyone else I’ve heard. From pop/rock/r&b/jazz/rap/metal/funk, there’s no genre that doesn’t get used in their sound. The lyrics are amazing. They’re completely anonymous. They’ve only ever done two or three interviews since they formed in 2016. I’d recommend Ascensionism or The Summoning to start.
Ren has a lot of deep and heavy songs but he has funny stuff as well. Check out '1990s (Official Lyric Video)' or 'Love music part 1 - 4'. Or 'Uninvited' for some naughty stuff 😀.

Unfortunately the US music industry has been gate-keeping for a good 20 years or so. You’re just about old enough to remember the British Invasion of the ‘60s/‘70s and ‘80s. Ever wondered what happened to all that pedigree and musical culture? It didn’t just die a sudden death. It’s just been hidden from your ears. What’s been happening is US record companies have been hiring a handful of writers to write for their own hand-picked performers (which is why everything sounds the same) coz it’s cheaper that way. That’s why you don’t see any great bands anymore but mostly individual singers: who would want to deal with 4-5 different personalities in a band, who might not even see eye to eye between themselves, never mind with you as the record label? Besides, you can hire session musicians to play the instruments, why would you need to sign a band? And if you stick to specific genres, you can target different demographics and predict sales and profits - great for profits, but bad for creativity and art. So, a lot of amazing talent from across the world are being purposely shut out - kill the competition. It’s like McDonald’s, shutting down the artisan family-run restaurants. The only reason why people like Ren (and you got to check out Raye also - live at the Royal Albert Hall) are getting noticed stateside is no thanks to the record industry, who control all the radio airwaves, but because they are independent artists who aren’t signed to a label and because of the internet…there’s nothing the record labels can do about that. Independent artists and the internet are the music industry’s worst nightmare and I hope that nightmare gets worse!
They were both incredibly passionate. I'm not sure why you singled out Chinchilla alone, in that regard. If anything, Ren's more passionate! Not surprising, as it's his song. Watch his face and listen to his voice. He even cries at the end! He appears less physically animated because he's playing the guitar at the same time and is singing into a fixed microphone.
