- Over the course of a few weeks filmmaker and extreme adventurer, Paul Suggitt made himself homeless to film a documentary of what life is like living on the streets and the impact it can have on a person.
From turf wars, violence between the homeless, violence towards the homeless, true stories from homeless people on how they manage to live day-to-day, and the reaction to the homeless from the public, living on the streets is very tough.
Homeless charities are reporting record numbers of people needing help with food, clothing and accommodation, so what is it really like to live on the streets?
All homeless people featured in the documentary were provided with support outside of filming to help them find accommodation and they were provided with a dedicated outreach person to liaise with the authorities on their behalf.

I'm in homeless accommodation right now, it's a life saver. I lost my Mom to misdiagnosis 3 years ago and it broke me. long story etc.. Respect to everyone out there helping others. I do what I can to help others whenever I can. Big love everyone x

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, so I know your mom and my dad are in a different realm and I know they're proud of us too bc they raised survivors, at all costs. I hope you soar! I was homeless on the streets of Newcastle and London for 6 years .. fortunately I got out of it and got my life together.
I live in Copenhagen now and as a 50 year old man I still think about those days cold and lonely without any direction living in a positive feedback loop .
Great video and a shocking reminder that we're all only a few pay checks away from this reality .

That was an incredible documentary. I was so moved by the support and genuine care that women had towards the homeless. She, in my opinion, puts many social workers who are no doubt paid vastly more to shame

The Sikhs of Middlesbrough we feed the homeless and vulnerable on a Sunday at 5pm in the town, and would love for you to join us one Sunday and get some if their experiences. It's a sad world when humanity is being let down. Takes nothing to be kind to someone, especially the needy homeless and vulnerable. If you csnt help them don't abuse them either. I went on a school trip to a Sikh temple in Smethwick as a kid and all the people there were so welcoming, gentle and kind. We even had a meal there which was delicious ☺️

Unbelievable this. What a man. Am from Liverpool and when I go the city centre and stop to the homeless and try my best to help them. I ask a man few weeks ago what he needs and he said he was just happy I spoke to him. So sad. ❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏

You needn't be much more than courteous to the homeless to find out that's all most of them need. A simple good morning- how do you do- is there anything you need. To be cut off from something as simple as communication between another human being is very hard & Shocking to the body & mind. Most of us don't even see the homeless Paul- we turn that blind eye ya see? The largest & most upsetting thing I've noticed Paul: People's house pets are treated better, fed better & receive proper Healthcare more than the homeless. Our own Species for God's sake!!!! We treat our own Species worse than a damned dog or a cat. Absolutely Ridiculous & in the end, most humans will be judged harshly by their Creator for not trying- for not saying that "hello, how are you"..see what I mean?? So thank you Paul Shields. You definitely help more than probably understand. So keep it up. Like the homeless Always remind me: "Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You!" We never know, someday it could be you or I out there on those freezing streets.

This person you are talking about might have cancer. Or bone pain. Or severe PTSD that they can't sleep. We NEVER know what the person next to us is going through. We needn't judge anyone. And a lot of people do - just to feel better bout themselves. Humans treat other Humans worse than anything else known. It's awful. So Thank You Zolee. You have a kind soul & heart.
@@sheldonhatch8255 I agree with what you said, except that there are so many animals (at least in the US) who don't get proper care and who need good homes- if you can't save a person there's nothing wrong with saving an animal, in a lot of cases they're more loyal and loving than any human!

Thanks Paul for having the courage and the compassion to raise awareness for the homeless. I'm a Case Manager here in the US advocating/supporting homeless specifically w/mental health challenges. It's truly a disgrace how we look down and treat our brothers and sisters that have nothing. I will say that the kindest and most generous people I have met are those that struggle just to make it through each day. God Bless you and I wish you all success in your future work.

People look down on you based on what they IMAGINE you to be, let alone what you are. Many are inherently evil.
Mick has so much potential. The way he sat down and put his arm around and vented and listened to others vent and just sat there and gave support 😭 so sad to think of all the people that given the right support and services and the positive impact they would in return have on others. So many lives would be completely different
I was on the streets pre pandemic. I can’t imagine being out there now. I’m out there helping when I can and it’s hell out there for them.
I used to avoid videos like this because it brings it all back and its like looking in a mirror, thank you whoever is up their for guiding me through and all those people along the way who helped light the way, hero's all.
What a sad documentary. Such lovely people landed on such hard times. I hope they get to live a content life. Jaime is an angel and one of the real heroes in this world! Thank you for highlighting this to people. We could all be there one day!
Need more people like you and the lady who was helping the homeless. Absolute legends. Being homeless is the worst experience of my life or atleast it's up there, wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. We need to be kinder and help one another more..
Thank you for this. Myself and my husband were on our own from a very young age. My husband from an orphanage and myself from an abusive disfunctional family. Support is everything. If I judge someone to be truly homeless I never pass without giving coffee money. I wish everyone else would do the same. Be kind always.

i had a serious skin infection in the Philipines while i was homeless during lockdown, now i am back in the UK, i had an accident and broke my knee, i am still in recovery post op 18 months since the operation, i am struggling to get my life back on track, other people have struggles, i am one of many!😚
A real honest look at homelessness. Genuine man is Paul with honest intentions. Jamie is amazing and what she does is life changing and probably life saving. Well done to all involved! I wish everyone who appeared in this documentary all the best!

You deserved that glass of wine at the very end,it looked as though all the stress and worries dripped of you. Magnificent job hi-lighting the scourge of homelessness. I've been there and it's pure bollocks times 10. I still dream about being on the streets and wake up in shock,even although it was a long long time back. Loneliness is the killer even although you meet and speak with people day and daily. "Get me to fuck out of this hell" is on your brain 24/7.This is the major cause of Depression and mental illness and the government turn the other cheek. It was ordinary things in life that meant the most, like a cup of tea,like reading the paper,like watching the news,getting a haircut..

True. Yet sometimes those that are just a few paychecks away from them, tend to be the most judgemental.
Some humans are evil, lack empathy, compassion and rotten cockroaches. Thank-you for exposing the homeless crisis and how evil some humans can be with despicable attitudes towards the unfortunate misadventure neglected homeless troubled souls. GOD bless this documentary of life on the streets during COVID and raising the need for public awareness and to change societal intolerance and class inequity. Thank you. But for the Grace of GOD.

Exactly! A homeless man in my area used to be a headteacher, apparently he had a breakdown after the death of his wife and he's been living on the streets for about 30 years now
God bless all of you out there that's homeless and having difficulties.iv been praying every night for over a year before I go to bed.
I found myself homeless when I left my partner in the middle of winter. I was lucky as I had a vehicle to sleep in. But for that engine running with the heater on I swear I would have died of hypothermia. Simple things like having a piss, crap, or wash become major issues. Things are better now but whenever I see someone sleeping in a doorway now, I am the first person to go up and say some friendly words and drop them a few quid. Great documentary dude, you actually really lived it....peace to ya.
These people have hearts of gold with so much potential among them, the scum who insult and harm the homeless are usually bottom of the barrel types who are probably scared by the thought that they could end up like that themselves. Jamie's work and knowledge is next level stuff, what a woman ❤
One of the best documentaries of an individual actually going homeless for more than a few days , you really showed how it’s so easy to fall into a situation and lose everything , no wonder alcohol and drugs play a huge part in just coping to get by on the streets God bless all

great job well done. i was homeless in the streets of kuala lumpur in 2017 for a short period , only until you are made homeless do you only know how it feels, needing the skills and wits to survive on a day to day basis.
This has been a eye opener for me! For us who take life for granted should be ashamed. I pray that life gets better for these precious souls everyone deserves a hot meal and a roof over our head. I thought that I was going through hard times with the economy and trying to raise my grandchildren on a fixed budget here in the USA, but after watching this I have no reason to complain. I will be checking to see what i can do to help. Thanks to the crew who put this video out and bringing awareness and those who try and help these wondering souls. God bless each and everyone of you!

I was homeless for 5 and half years here in Detroit. Lived in a home with no lights gas or water. I had a cooler bbq and 2 kerosene heater. It was HELL. Last year the state of Michigan put me into the Red roof in 4 4 months. I have a Duplex 2 brm with my son. They paid rent and utilities for a year. Now I work my son works for Amazon making 20.85 an hour.
Fantastic documentary Paul. I am so glad you showed the realities and that you learnt something about perception towards the homeless. You are right highlighting the difference between the street homeless and those down on their luck. The part where you split your pot made me remember those days again where it was always whatever we make between us is 50/50. So glad I am not in that position anymore but my 18 months living that way changed my life in the way I look at, talk to and treat other human beings.

I fell through every single hole when I was homeless and nobody wanted to know people should just stop and ask how someone is or just say hello and not just walk past someone who is on the streets it's a very sad world we live in with the amount of money in the world there should not be homeless or poverty nowadays
I used to work for the Salvation Army. They had a cafe with proper cooked food at a cheap price where the local poor could come, get hot food and socialise. Their charity shop I worked in, next door would give freely, sleeping bags, clothes & shoes to anyone that was homeless, including a food donation. Money, food and clothing, donated by the local people, it was a hands on approach...Now ?? all gone, no explanation, infact it was like they knew that covid was coming and shut up shop, very sad

While I see and also acknowledge the value in Paul’s documentary, I was beyond shocked at the comment section. The woman called Jamie is out there daily assisting the homeless in her community. Whether offering a kind word to someone living a life most of us couldn’t imagine, or finding someone housing so they don’t have to live on the street~she is a true hero and I am shocked that there is virtually no acknowledgement for what she does. Paul seems like a cool guy who had beautiful intentions with his film, but he also moved on to his next project after this wrapped up. Bet you Jamie is still out there, rain or shine, helping her fellow man. Thank you Jamie! Also thank you Paul, as the video was, of course, a great way to shed light on a topic that many people just don’t want to address or look at too closely.

Amazing Paul is incredible and I love how he spoke with mick and made him feel like he mattered, hes just been down on his luck I honestly feel like he wanted Paul as a friend.
I think it was Mick who mentioned that the refugees were put up in hotels and the homeless were forgotten about. In my home town that happens a lot. Hotels that for years had been used to shelter the homeless over the bitter winter months were no longer able to offer the service as they had been inundated with refugees. Which is all well and good but every human being on this earth deserves to have a roof over their head and warm food in their bellies and that includes the homeless.
Such a massive problem and it really gets me. This country needs to start getting its act together and think of the indigenous for once.

of the 3 basic needs, shelter must be the most important of we are to have human dignity. I know... because I can go without meat or carbs and live no designer clothes... But to have no place to sleep at night or your own bath room is tough.

I was homeless several times. It's no joke. The COVID pandemic has also wrought havoc with my livelihood. But I'm slowly getting back in my feet.

I've been searching through watching homeless people's stories on youtube and they all have common themes its such a shame. I can't recall the name of the woman volunteer that's helping people in this area but what a true gem she is. I'm sure she has a wealth of knowledge to share on how our homeless can be provided for. Huge reform is needed across so many sectors to solve this problem. Thank you for the documentary and the insight it provided me much appreciated.

Hi there darl. I'm Martin who's on this documentary with with my then girlfriend becca. Jamie Horton turned out to be a pure con artist who was in it 4 the money. I could go into so many scams she pulled but would take me a day. But you see Paul sugget and his camera man Dan. They are the genuine real deal. I ended up back on the streets and done a full Yr living rough and she just ignored everyone then took her charity off line. Honestly in my eyes she's evil. I'm on a friend's phone my name won't show up. Anyway take care b safe 😉

I agree wholeheartedly. Last September I found myself living in my car, then that got taken away...Being homeless can ABSOLUTELY change one's life entirely. Our own Species, for God's sake, deserves at the very least, a "Hi there, how are you today?"

I Worked the streets of London for almost 17 years as an Ambulance man. At the beginning of my job, i was dismisive of the homeless. I was soon put right after amore experianced Old Hand told me the story of a regular Alcaholic street Person. To say his Story broke my heart is an Understatement. I will go out of my way to help anyone, be they rich or poor. I feel humbled by the way my life has turned out. Two beautiful grown up children. Although single now, after a 27 year Marrage. I am still best friends with my X and her Partner. I see family once a week. and although i live in a Caravan with my cat patch. i have everything i need to thrive and survive. PEACE

When I was in UK. I saw empty boarded up streets under a constant grey sky, litter everywhere.
Homeless people sleeping in doorways. Opioid addicts out of their mind and women so drunk they urinated on the streets. It's a sad declined country

Props to Paul for putting himself through this. Even with security, it must have been tough. Especially knowing he could duck out at any time & go back to a comfortable home. I’m sure there’s many a time he wondered why on earth he was doing this & the fact he stuck it out for so long is impressive.
I was also in a terrible condition I understand how tough and rough life could be I got help by someone whose currently helping me I won't say I'm proud of my self right now but I'm not where I use to be atleast i need to be thankful for that and I hope I will grow to be relevant to help others soon❤

Really enjoyed this Paul a big eye opener I’m from Middlesbrough and I work all over the Cleveland area boarding up houses for the police. The amount of houses that are empty is astonishing, and I tell u what it is most of them are owned by people from the south and buy them when they don’t know the area and how bad some places are and don’t get the property’s managed for them and leave them to rot
Even the empty shops are owned by the rich elite and not the councils they havnt even stepped foot in teesside or know of it It's crazy. They won't let the shops go for cheap rent or anything that's why one reason these town centres are dying these days.
Your right with saying people just want to push you further away and basically have no consideration for others when someone is down on their luck, society is really tasteless and its really sad to see, really love this documentary 10/10

That lady Jaime is an absolute gem! As these people showed, homelessness isn’t fixed with just giving them a house. There’s so much more to the issue & each person has their own story & needs a lot of support to get off the streets

i was street homeless with 2 dogs fo0r 4.5 years and what i found a lot of homeless people made being homeless so hard
So true. Almost all of us are a few paychecks away from possibly becoming homeless. Sad reality. Can you imagine having to worry about where you are going to sleep and rest every day. Weather and safety etc.

Everyone has a history and reasons for the way things are, often outwith their control through circumstances. Sad what a homeless person has to go through on a daily basis just to survive some how. Such an important topic that gets ignored by the nightly news here in America
Had the pleasure of knowing John at LondonLiverpool Street.. used to stop and chat to him while he was sat on the benches. he’s a lovely chap. I wish him the best for the future and hope to see his life turn around..

These documentaries of homeless people made me really emotional and upset, there was a time in my life when i was young below 10 in india me entire family was very poor we had problems and were struggling to eat and alot problems we were really poor we servived cleaning peoples houses and also working in shops to get some food. I went out to give some homless people food and now i feel like i will try to fhis once a week and try give back to my community. My family made out moving to UK and we all made our lives nice marride of kids and big happy family. but now that im abit stable i will try my best to give and serve hot home made food once a week.

2yrs ago I was homeless but I was still working I used to live in a van omg it went from bad to worst one day in the winter my van heater stop working so I got big blankets I used to start working 3 am butt because I was in the airport car park I was safe but cold one day it was frozen inside my van but I hade to soldier on I wen to work I used to go to the gym after work its the dam greedy land Lords are so greedy the rent is going up and up I hade no choice but purely by the grace of Allah now I have got a flat much much better plus I am now disabled but we live in hope 💜💜💜
I was really touched and full of admiration by your story, you are a brave and determined human being who got himself off the streets, you are a success.
You have different problems now and may you have the courage to face those with the same strength of will and faith.

And we still keep taking the dinghy people in, when we have so many homeless people ourselves. I guess the saying 'Charity begins at Home' doesn't count anymore......it's very sad. Excellent little film.
Best homeless documentary I've ever seen was a good watch mate well done I think u should do another in another city
